Anxious about trump presidency

understatedeleganza · 16/07/2024 22:26

Is anyone else lying awake at night worrying about this?

I don't live in the states but I am really anxious about this. I'm anxious for everyone living over there yes very much so, but I'm anxious about the much greater possibility of world war, I'm anxious about all the cuts to funding for various international issues in particular climate change initiatives. We're already fucked on that front but if there's any hope for our children we need the power of the states. The Project 2025 list of targets is like something from a dystopian novel, it's really frightening.

I'm also very nervous that the way the new government will structure the legal system they will essentially create a dictatorship that will never be able to be dismantled - they have basically said they will try to do this and tried last time (but failed).

Can anyone talk me down. I can't see anything positive here.

I am sorry but I find you ridiculous. As someone said he was a president before. Worse things have happened around the world and in the US under Biden in the last four years. People are unhappy over in the US as Biden and Kamala only weapon is that they were not Trump. Now he will come back as a result of the incompetency of the Democrats. Not matter how anxious you feel.
If you really feel like that it may be something else going on and you need to be seen by a professional.

It's odd, because everything I see and read leads me to believe that Biden has achieved a huge amount during his tenure. Of course things aren't perfect and that will apply to us over here no doubt during this next Labour government.

I'm sorry but I do find it a bit rude saying 'go and get professional help' when the OP is expressing concern about a trump presidency. I feel exactly the same as her, I followed those 4 years closely, even to the point of watching the daily Pressers when I could. Like @understatedeleganza I have a sense of impending doom that Trump might get in again, and no I don't need professional help. The thought of seeing his ghastly grifting family again makes me very uneasy. Perhaps he will bring in the sons this time I don't think Jared and Ivanka will bother, they made enough money first time round.

understatedeleganza · 19/07/2024 14:46

Thanks for the support @BustingBaoBun and others. I do not need professional help but I would get some if it got to that stage. I'm just aware of my surroundings

I agree with you OP. It doesn't keep me awake at night but I find it very depressing
I really don't care what the voters do to their own country, that's democracy
But the impact on international relations and the environment affects us all. He's already said drill baby drill and pledged to reduce electric vehicles

I very much agree. Americans have had plenty of time to find out from his previous administration how thick he is.

Plus that disconnected, rambling speech he did this week at the RNC. Talking about how much Kim Jong Un 'misses' him and how well they get on. Clearly this isn't something to brag about. And he certainly wasn't looking powerful or dynamic either.

His cult will be obsessed by him for all time but it doesn't mean he's going to win the election.

dropoutin · 21/07/2024 10:15

What on Earth makes some people think that Trump's next term will be just like his last one? Wake the fuck up, look at what he attempted to do, and listen to what he actually says. This is like a political version of "when someone tells you who they are, believe them".

"He may be a lying racist misogynist who doesn't acknowledge the right of electoral processes to curtail his absolute power, but there are factors that will make it difficult for him to act upon all that" is hardly a glowing recommendation. If it's intended to ease the OP's fears, try again.

The president of the world's largest and most powerful democracy shouldn't be pushing at those buttons in the first place.

Oh and so now Trump has literally come out saying he's going to fix it so he/they are never out of power if they get in this time. An exact worry that I expressed in this thread in the first place! He wants to be a dictator and to be honest it seems a lot like many Americans want him to be

And a lot don’t. Take comfort from Kamela Harris’ growing popularity.

CanadianJohn · 27/07/2024 17:01

CNN quotes from Trump's recent speech at a conservative Christian event on Friday:
"You won’t have to (vote) anymore. Four more years. You know what? It’ll be fixed, it’ll be fine, you won’t have to vote anymore, my beautiful Christians. I love you, Christians,” Trump said at the event, hosted by the conservative group Turning Point Action. “You gotta get out and vote. In four years, you don’t have to vote again — we’ll have it fixed so good you’re not going to have to vote.”

So, is Trump planning to end democracy somehow. President for life?

swimsong · 28/07/2024 08:56

The Christian Nationalists, that he is appealing to, explicitly say they want a theocracy to replace democracy.

Meanwhile, for light relief, Google 'JD Vance couch' and 'JD Vance dolphin' memes. Dirty Donald must be fuming.

Emmanuelll · 28/07/2024 09:23

I am hopeful that Trump won't be reelected.

IsThisAWhaleOrArmadillo · 28/07/2024 11:04

Every time I see a photo or footage of JD Vance I imagine Leonardo DiCaprio playing him in a future movie.

And not as a sympathetic character.

Do you know he’s already been president for 4 years? It wasn’t that bad (well, apart from trusting Fauci). He certainly wasn’t pro war.

He's far far better prepared this time. And he may never leave.

luckylavender · 28/07/2024 19:58

I fully believe that it will be his intention to never leave, but will he be able to pull it off?
Surely there are enough protections and guard rails that he couldn't?

BIossomtoes · 28/07/2024 21:10

He’s got to be elected first. That’s a long way from a certainty.

dropoutin · 29/07/2024 19:18

BIossomtoes · 27/07/2024 16:49

Exactly. It's only a slight majority of American voters who are planning to elect someone who has (a) literally attempted to overturn the democratic process last time, and now (b) literally, openly declared his intention of doing so again.

So that's OK then.

I was delighted with the result. Couldn’t understand on what basis anyone would want to vote for Kamala to be honest. The only surprise was how many votes she did get.

What do you think will be delightful about the White House being in charge of an addled, ignorant, bigoted, convicted 78-year-old rapist fraudster with the vocabulary of an eight-year-old, 50 years of abject business failures, 30,000 documented lies during his first term of office, who adores fascist dictators and surrounds himself with misogynist, racist thugs? He can't even blend his makeup properly and you think he should be in charge of the nuclear buttons?

He's going to abandon America's allies and ruin its domestic economy with tariffs, just like he screwed their agricultural industries during his first term (causing taxpayers to foot the bill for billions in bail outs). Not to mention what he'll do to women, people of color and migrants. His acute failure to manage the pandemic caused hundreds of thousands of excess deaths.

All while his porn-star immigrant wife gets another stint as chatelaine of the White House.

I am appalled at the American voters.

You ok hun? Maybe the opposition should have found an even remotely credible opposition, they could have walked it. They again chose poorly. This is the consequence. They have a history of it.

I'm no political scientist but it seems to me that an experienced politician who has served as attorney general, senator and vice president of the United States is more than "remotely credible," certainly more so than a failed nepo-baby who has a 50-year trail of business implosions, including casinos, due to his mismanagement. He's only survived the past 20 years by laundering Russian money and serving as front manon that idiotic reality television programme.

He's also a convicted criminal, has been found to be a rapist by a senior judge, stole classified documents and stored them in a toilet, told the American public he trusts Putin more than the FBI & CIA, and against the law profited from his presidency, as did his offspring. There are thousands of lawsuits against him and he boasts about not paying tradesmen and contractors. And that's just the tip of the iceberg.

Anyone who thinks this washed-up criminal cretin is more suitable than a career public servant ... well, America should be embarrassed today. And for the next four years.

You’re right. You’re no political scientist, athough I think you meant analyst. I have nothing more to say. Team Trump here, looking forward to action, unlike the past 4 years.
