Anxious about trump presidency

Is anyone else lying awake at night worrying about this?

I don't live in the states but I am really anxious about this. I'm anxious for everyone living over there yes very much so, but I'm anxious about the much greater possibility of world war, I'm anxious about all the cuts to funding for various international issues in particular climate change initiatives. We're already fucked on that front but if there's any hope for our children we need the power of the states. The Project 2025 list of targets is like something from a dystopian novel, it's really frightening.

I'm also very nervous that the way the new government will structure the legal system they will essentially create a dictatorship that will never be able to be dismantled - they have basically said they will try to do this and tried last time (but failed).

Can anyone talk me down. I can't see anything positive here.

The world is turning further right before our eyes and yes, it is quite worrying. Governments are relying on people's fears about immigration, economy and whatever they see fit. People are getting poorer whilst the rich get richer and people want to see if the right can help - we know it won't and everyone's rights will disappear. Scary thought indeed.

I am not particularly worried about world war with Trump as he's quite insular, but his friendships with dictators around the world does not bode well for people in their countries.

I am more concerned for American citizens and their rights but it's like Turkeys voting for Christmas. It is more like a cult these days rather than a movement for change.

MorrisZapp · 17/07/2024 09:05

Look, he's old and unhealthy. I don't wish pain or violence on anyone but I suspect he'll be overtaken by health issues soon enough, and if he isn't, well this term will be his last, per constitutional law. His followers are basically a cult and once he's gone they will have a long wait for another orange bully with his reach to come to prominence.

Then the pendulum will swing back to boring politics.

It's a terrible terrible prospect. Most reasonable Americans are terrified at the thought.

It surprised me that an actual Doctor (he was interviewed after performing CPR on the man who died, who was also a pillar of his community) would be at a Trump rally. I had them all down as dumbass rednecks. I suppose intelligence and apparent decency have never been reliable markers for doing the right thing…

@AppleStrudel23
He has recounted a conversation with a friend in which he described coming to the conclusion that the UK under the new Labour government is the first Islamic state to have nuclear weapons.
These comments have been widely condemned across all political parties in the uk - even by Nigel Farage.

BustingBaoBun · 17/07/2024 09:25

Also not sending money to Europe for wars... why should the US taxpayers be paying for a war they aren't involved in? And has any of this money helped? We should be working towards peace not paying for Ukraines weapons to keep this slaughter up

How isolationist. You say Ukraine are 'keeping the slaughter up' by provision of weapons. Do you need reminding who invaded Ukraine? Why don't you mention Russia in that paragraph of yours? Russia launched a fullscale invasion.

Do you want the US to come out of NATO, is that your underlying reason for this post?

If that's true he won't have a chance of getting in will he? Unless you are suggesting that the vast majority of Americans are unreasonable people?

sunflowrsngunpowdr · 17/07/2024 09:30

If this is real I think you should seek help for your anxiety.

I wish I shared your optimism, his successor(s) are already coming up behind.

I think it is amazing some of the things that are attributed to Trump.

For example, changing the US constitution is hard. Really hard. So hard in fact the last time it was changed was in 1992, when some amendments that were proposed 200 (sic) years ago were ratified.

If Trumps plans are to "change the constitution" as some people believe then all I can say is good luck with that.

Only slightly less than half of the people who bother to vote need to choose Trump for him to become the world's most powerful man. Not a majority, and certainly nothing like a vast majority.

I couldn't give a monkeys that Trump seeks immunity from prosecution etc... i mean have we in the UK ever put on trial a PM ??? Lying to Parliament, wrecking the economy and hence costing people huge amounts of their hard earned money.

No, Trump is scary because of his views on Climate change, Ukraine and NATO.... all of these have the potential to cause us very big problems.

Then you don't understand how the electoral college works. US presidents aren't elected by a popular majority vote. Back in 2016, Trump lost the popular vote by 3 million and still won the electoral college. He has support from roughly one third of the country but it all hinges on a few thousand votes in half a dozen swing states.

There is no nuclear button. It takes multiple high level military personnel with top secret codes and physical keys to work in unison to launch a nuclear attack and I truly believe they would not, at this point, blindly follow an order from Biden to do so.

Biden is the president of course they'd follow an order he gave.

There are plenty of ways around it for the time being - such as using the Comstock Act to enact a de facto ban on abortion. Also, in many ways the constitution has failed to help hold him to account so far, so it’s doubtful it’ll contain him this time round.
Not unreasonable to be v v anxious imo.

The problem is that people are poor and getting poorer. They don't have free healthcare, their holidays and other employment practices aren't great people don't want their taxes to go and fight a war that has no material impact on them (at the moment) - I don't think that's an unreasonable perspective when you see that you aren't getting a lot. I don't agree with being so isolationist and if Russia continues with the invasion and won it would have huge ramifications but I can see where people are coming from.

CrunchyCarrot · 17/07/2024 11:52

I'm not going to lie awake at night worrying about it, no, because what will be, will be. However what IS worrying is if he stops vaccine mandates for children in the US, because a lot of people will stop vaccinating their children and that will lead to the rise of serious illnesses and childhood deaths.

Emmanuelll · 17/07/2024 12:22

Is Trump an anti-vaxxer? As awful as the man is I didn’t think he was anti vaccination.

IsThePopeCatholic · 17/07/2024 12:25

The prospect of trump winning is terrifying. I feel so sorry for liberal Americans.

Tbh, thinking about it more carefully, I expect that Trump, like most sociopaths probably doesn’t have a set of convictions to live by like people with empathy do.

My own experience of sociopaths is that they change their ‘opinions’ all the time because they don’t actually have a moral compass. it all comes down to what they can get out of it.

There is no positives in a trump presidency. And biden refusing to step down isn't helping.

I don't know who I'm most angry at.

share prices will go up

understatedeleganza · 17/07/2024 13:47

Thank you @Evenstar that's helpful

@Emmanuelll I (and research) tend to find that people who are on the far right, who believe in conspiracies, who don't believe in women's and LGBTQ+ rights, tend to overlaps heavily with anti-vaxers...
