Understanding Jay Slater case

softmauve · 01/07/2024 10:14

Can someone explain what is known about this.
My brief understanding (and I'm possibly wrong) is that he had a scuffle and stole a Rolex outside the party he attended. Then went back to an Airbnb with two British guys he didn't know. Stayed there a couple of hours then attempted to walk back to his accommodation. Had a couple of phone calls with friends that give no particular info. The British guys are not involved (seems odd that he was with them). And JS is still missing or possibly hiding/kidnapped. Who has the Rolex?
It all sounds very convoluted and a clear picture would obviously help people understand.

I don't think it has been confirmed that the Rolex thing happened has it, I though that was just another theory that someone had come up with?

My theory is that he went back to the AirBnB with the 2 men, in the morning decided to walk back to his accomodtion, probably not realising how far it was and possibly still under the influence of drink/drugs, and slipped/fell down the mountain. His mate said in an interview that whilst he was on the phone to him, he could hear he had slipped.

ColonelRhubarbBikini · 01/07/2024 10:22

From what I’ve read the Rolex thing is pure speculation. He went with two guys to their accommodation after a party and then while attempting to walk after failing to get the bus has gone missing.

Who really knows what happened but Occam’s razor suggests that he’s come a cropper in the harsh terrain and is no longer alive.

All the wild theories around this case remind me of the Nicola Bulley disappearance.

FeelingHotHotHotFeelingHotHotHot · 01/07/2024 10:24

I don't know what actually really happened, and there are lots of scenarios circulating, but they have called off the search now. I have a feeling he will never be found.

IamaRevenant · 01/07/2024 10:31

Agree with the PPs. I think he was drunk and fell and his body is very sadly in a ravine or something. It's easily done, I have two friends who died similarly when in a foreign country after partying (separately) and one wasn't found for weeks and weeks as he'd ended up so deep in a remote forest.

Feel so sad for Jay's family.

SabrinaThwaite · 01/07/2024 10:35

If there’s anything to these conspiracy theories and rumours (and it might all be rubbish), then talk of a Rolex isn’t necessarily anything to do with watches.

I have no idea what that means. Is it related to drugs?

No-one knows and no-one needs to know apart from his family.

The area has a big drug problem. There’s rumours he lost/ stole drugs too.

He was away “celebrating” the end of his community service for his part in a violent crime.

He clearly made some very foolish choices and either perished due to accident/dehydration/overdose or he upset the wrong person. My sympathies are somewhat limited either way.

KnickerlessParsons · 01/07/2024 10:42

According to this, if Rolexes were involved it could explain why he went missing

It's a bit difficult to follow it all. Supposed drugs mules, multiple go fund me accounts, theories he has been kidnapped for a drugs debt.
He's been missing for 2 weeks now and the police must believe he's not alive as they have called off the search.
They can't keep searching forever, my guess is his remains will be stumbled upon by hikers in a remote area, in a few weeks, months or even years

softmauve · 01/07/2024 10:45

Ah, so the Rolex is possibly drugs?
Makes more sense.
And possibly went back to the Airbnb to 'enjoy' them with his new friends.
That simplifies things.

The rolex is a rumour. Someone got in a fight outside the rave he was at because they claimed to have had a rolex stolen.

He was at a rave. Quite drunk/likely high. After the rave he went back to a remote airbnb with 2 men he'd met on holiday

The next morning he left the airbnb, asked a woman about the buses and then went off walking. He called a friend on said walk and was apparently in high spirits and was walking down a rocky slope. He then called another friend not long later to say he was lost, phone had no battery and he needed a drink. He sent her his location. She called the police. He's not been found

That's all we know. Any Talk of drugs, rolexs, mafia is all speculation and often based off rumours and hearsay. The most likely scenario is he was fallen or died of exhaustion/dehydration off road somewhere.

DaffydownClock · 01/07/2024 10:49

I really don’t think he’s even on the island, the whole thing just seems strange to me that the dogs didn’t pick up a single scent of him from where he supposedly disappeared so it’s no wonder that they have stopped the search.

FiveTreeHill · 01/07/2024 10:50

He left the rave at 4am to go back with the men, he was last heard from at 8.50 so chances are he was probably still under the influence of whatever substances he consumed or in the beginnings of a comedown/major hangover. Either way it doesn't lead to a great chance of survival

HolyPeaches · 01/07/2024 10:54

The Facebook conspiracies are absolutely wild. It’s a total circus.

It’s totally plausible that Tenerife’s bars and nightlife are heavily linked with drug cartels. But if he was kidnapped and held by the Moroccan mafia, and they were demanding ransom, that 30K would be with them already and Jay would be freed.

Sadly, I believe he’s dead. Either foul play or he’s off the beaten track and body yet to be discovered.

It’s a huge lesson to all (especially young) people to not leave your friends or allow them to go off with strangers when heavily intoxicated.

I thought it was this.

People wandering off trails and coming a cropper aren't rare occurrences - though in UK given our population density and more temperate climate you do have to go to more remote areas to be at similar risk.

They’ve called off the search now. I thought it was odd the sniffer dogs didn’t pick up a trace of him but I guess the area must be massive and sadly he might never be found.

that, or he’s hiding somewhere as a quick way to make money on a go fund me but it seems an extreme way to go about it.
