Understanding Jay Slater case

softmauve · 01/07/2024 10:14

Can someone explain what is known about this.
My brief understanding (and I'm possibly wrong) is that he had a scuffle and stole a Rolex outside the party he attended. Then went back to an Airbnb with two British guys he didn't know. Stayed there a couple of hours then attempted to walk back to his accommodation. Had a couple of phone calls with friends that give no particular info. The British guys are not involved (seems odd that he was with them). And JS is still missing or possibly hiding/kidnapped. Who has the Rolex?
It all sounds very convoluted and a clear picture would obviously help people understand.

@OrchardBlack rather worrying the police are unaware of drugs that have been wrecking havoc and taking lives in recent weeks and months. Extremely worrying.

Demonhunter · 01/07/2024 11:10

After I'd been repping for a couple of years and saw too many accidents and near misses with young groups, I used to be worried sick whenever I had boisterous, drink and drug loving youth groups who left their common sense at the airport. There was so many times I'd be frogmarching people out of certain clubs, shouting to them not to go in somewhere (places I'd pre warned them about that were playgrounds for drugging drinks and robbery or assault) and sending them in a taxi back to their apartments! We dealt with fatal ODs (although not as many as the Dutch reps did thankfully) drownings and balcony falls. I was only in my mid 20s by this point and felt about 80 and swear it's what start turning my hair grey!
It wouldn't at all surprise me if he has had an accident walking back.

Bit harsh.

I thought it was more US slang than UK but what do I know.

That's not what she's saying though is it? She's just saying that she didn't know rolex was slang for cocaine, which it seems a lot of people didn't myself included.

Mrsjayy · 01/07/2024 11:15

ROLEX is ecstasy isn't it ? It all sounds so suss 19years old just finished community service and now missing what a waste of a young life.

It’s not possible to know every single slang term for various drugs Hmm

According to this, if Rolexes were involved it could explain why he went missing

Oh I hadn't noticed your post sorry.

You don’t need to understand what happened. Unless you are his family it’s got nothing to do with you.

MyBreezyPombear · 01/07/2024 11:16

@Mrsjayy I've seen different people say different things, I don't have a clue.

OrchardBlack · 01/07/2024 11:04

I'm a copper and I'd never heard of it either, so don't be too hard on yourself 😂

Most of our usernames are probably drug slang somewhere in the world, at some time, @OrchardBlack. (Or you could put 'American Riviera' in front of them and add 'berry jam'. New parlour game.)

I had no idea that Tenerife had this dark side.

@CracklingLogsGalore - much depends on which section of the police force @OrchardBlack works in. They don't all deal with drugs, and nor are they all expected to have an in-depth knowledge of drugs - that's the whole point of specialisted units. Off the top of my head, I would imagine that no in-depth knowledge of drugs and their nicknames is required for the following departments:

  1. ACRO Criminal Records Office (ACRO) ...
  2. Counter Terrorism Policing HQ (CTPHQ) ...
  3. National Ballistics Intelligence Service (NABIS) ...
  4. National Business Crime Centre (NBCC) ...
  5. National Vehicle Crime Intelligence Service (NaVCIS) ...
  6. National Wildlife Crime Unit (NWCU)
Obviously I have no idea what OrchardBlack's responsibilities are, but she can't be expected to know it all.

Isn’t it just, I had no idea!

Why, when it's a public interest news story?

Plus when I googled Rolex drugs it came up with ecstasy, so it clearly varies.

You can hardly be unaware it's been national news and headlining at times. So it's natural that people are curious.
Would you say the same about M McCann for example?

The obvious outcome IMO is that like Michael Mosley, his body has been missed. You've only got to see the terrain on the TV shots to see they can't have explored every single shrub and ravine.

Fieldsofgold1 · 01/07/2024 11:23

Still a mystery why he went back to the apartment but otherwise I think he was drunk, high or starting to come down, hence asking twice about the bus and then deciding to walk back through the mountains.

Or he was possibly trying to avoid someone by walking through the mountains.

Wonder why he was spotted 'walking quickly' down the main road.

I doubt he is alive. Whether that is through exhaustion, dehydration, a fall, or something else.

His poor family Sad

tara66 · 01/07/2024 11:23

Re. him getting lost in area shown on Sky News - when you see the pictures of the very rugged, difficult, dangerous and empty terrain - you just think he must have stayed on the road if/when walking wherever he was going even if under the influence.. So he probably fell of the road or there has been foul play.

Bromptotoo · 01/07/2024 11:24

The number of trips to and from Canaries and Madeira by Air Ambulances is amazing. Presumably repatriating those injured or seriously ill.

AthenaBasil · 01/07/2024 11:24

I wouldn’t believe any rumours or repeat them. I think it’s horrible how people use real life likely tragedies as entertainment. Often in these cases it is something simple and people going down rabbit holes with conspiracy theories aren’t helping. I can’t image going through something like this as his family and having to deal with people making up lies and coming up with theories

It's all a bit confusing - when I googled, it said cocaine, but maybe that's a US thing? https://www.dea.gov/sites/default/files/2018-07/DIR-020-17%20Drug%20Slang%20Code%20Words.pdf And in the UK it means ecstasy, like the news report that a PP linked to?

Who knows! It’s a whole different world. Very grateful I don’t don’t know much about it.

CantDealwithChristmas · 01/07/2024 11:27

I was surprised the 2 guys in the Air BnB apparently went straight back to the UK, as the last people to see him alive I'd have thought they police would want to question them closely.

I guess they did, though, and that they have evidence that he left their place alive and well.

TBH I think it's just a sad case of a teen getting drunk/high and getting lost and coming a cropper. Cocaine, E or any sort of amphetamine could easily make a person think they're capable of walking 11 hours over rough terrain. These incidents are far from uncommon in the UK, I'd read several stories over the years of students in freshers week getting too drunk and flaling in rovers or getting hypthermia on their way home. Especially northern/Scottish Unis where it gets extremely cold at night and some students may not fully appreciate that.

Sad.

CatMumSlave · 01/07/2024 11:28

@HolyPeaches

It’s a huge lesson to all (especially young) people to not leave your friends or allow them to go off with strangers when heavily intoxicated.

I understand what you're saying but how can you physically stop someone from going where they want to go?
