Understanding Jay Slater case

softmauve · 01/07/2024 10:14

Can someone explain what is known about this.
My brief understanding (and I'm possibly wrong) is that he had a scuffle and stole a Rolex outside the party he attended. Then went back to an Airbnb with two British guys he didn't know. Stayed there a couple of hours then attempted to walk back to his accommodation. Had a couple of phone calls with friends that give no particular info. The British guys are not involved (seems odd that he was with them). And JS is still missing or possibly hiding/kidnapped. Who has the Rolex?
It all sounds very convoluted and a clear picture would obviously help people understand.

There was a story about this on the Sun (I think - one of the right wing rags that occasionally pops up on my social media feed, for some reason) this morning and underneath it were loads of posts by people convinced that his disappearance is a Karen Matthews-style scam for his family to get money from the public, and that he's not missing at all.

This is someone’s child who has probably sadly died after attempting a long walk in harsh terrain in the heat with no water. Sad. But the speculation about his character is unnecessary.

my Brother and I did a long walk in one of the recent extreme heatwaves in England
We soon got through our water.

The tracks were stony but nothing like Tenerife
The thirst was such a driving force- I think Jay tried to take a short cut and possibly suffered a broken ankle - it’s most likely something like this than anything else.

After a night on stimulants he’d be really dehydrated because of peeing so much- Plus in blazing sun you need so much water - I feel it’s most likely to a simple accident rather than Gangland feuds.

It does seem somewhat implausible. There was no guarantee they'd make £40K either.

SirChenjins · 01/07/2024 14:43

Is this what we can all expect nowadays if one of our children goes missing? Something, somewhere has gone very wrong in the world.

I blame the rise in the popularity in True Crime podcasts/programmes. Everyone is an amateur internet sleuth. Despite having no access to any of the actual evidence, and basing most of their theories on what they’ve read in the Daily Mail.

Rivers move. Bodies move. Searching a river is never going to be 100% even if the body was there

I'm a copper and I'd never heard of it either, so don't be too hard on yourself 😂

Well I Googled rolex in urban dictionary and it was nothing to do with drugs or watches Shock

Not really strange at all. Rivers are full of weeds, branches etc. A body could be caught up for a time and then break free due to currents. Spotting a body comes down to luck, in the end. Someone has to actually get eyeballs on it and recognise what they are seeing when it probably looks nothing like a person.

Scorchio84 · 01/07/2024 14:49

I remember that @Gymmum82 & she was close to the trail... my friend spent some time in Austrlia & she & her ex used to drive UTs or camper vans/trucks from one side to another & she said how easily you could go missing

@SabrinaThwaite

So glad my own DC have no interest in this kind of stuff!

Unfortunately we can't always know 100% what our teens are up too.?

Fortunately I can, since both take WADA doping rules seriously and the eldest has to undertake random testing for work.

IhateJan22 · 01/07/2024 14:52

It’s awful all the speculation, I feel for the family having to read it all. None of us know what has happened. All this he deserves it because he attacked someone, none of us know the circumstances to that either, he’d be applauded if it turned out the other lad was a Paedophile.

I really hope he is found either way to give the family the closure they so desperately need.

I suppose that shows how easy it is to miss a body - even though we can't imagine that it would be. I remember, in Nicola Bulley's case, the guy in charge of searching the river saying that there was absolutely no way she was in that bit of the river and he'd stake his career on it - but lo and behold, that was exactly where she turned up.

The Marchioness Tragedy back in the 1980’s

Some of the bodies were found as far away as Richmond.
There was no Internet back then, Just World Service on the radio and daily papers ( and TV)

The Internet has spawned new depths of crazy conspiracy theories and people making money out of “ True Crime”

Even so called Psychics rehashing what is basically on the news
One said Jay is likely not alive because his Saturn is in his Eighth House!

But realistically the boy had just suffered heat stroke or injury somewhere.

Not Karma. Just misadventure.

One of the survivors of Auschwitz said it was sheer dumb arbitrary luck that she survived and thousands didn’t.

Not Karma at all.

ElecticBetty · 01/07/2024 15:00

Must admit it tickles me everyone being confused about the dogs being useless - wonder how many of them are the same “dogs don’t lie” conspiracy theorists about the M McCann case !

Her body moved onto a shelf of earth under the riverbank, so not strange.

The Tenerife police have not been providing frequent updates.

I recommend Websleuths to anyone who wants to read up on what is known about his disappearance - their mods have had to shut the thread (now on to part 3) several times to give them time to delete SM/speculative comments. Posters there are allowed to post their theories, but they have to say that they are just that, theories. Anything asserted as fact has to be backed by links to official statements or approved mainstream media.

And it has to be victim friendly, and whatever his past, Jay is the victim. There is no reason to think that his crime in UK a couple of years ago is relevant to his disappearance now.

He was on his first holiday without his parents (presumably after his sentence was completed), with friends (different reports give different accounts of who/how many)

After the end of NRG, at least three met up with 2 other men, who (according to some accounts) they'd met up with several times before during the trip - so it seems they were holiday acquaintances, not complete randoms. Jay went back with them to theirs in the north in the very early morning. We don't know how much the worse for wear he was.

He posted a pic at theirs early morning.

He left, seemingly of his own accord, and asked a local about a bus. Instead of waiting for it, he set off walking (same local says she saw him on the road, heading away from the direction of his own accommodation)

He had contact with friend Brad, in which he may have been off road as he said he slipped/tripped, sounding OK. About 20 mins later, call with Lucy, in which he needed a drink, had been cut by a cactus and phone battery about to die. Sent last ping.

Lucy raised the alarm, police did not start searching straight away but did begin in the following hours

The two men stayed on an extra day in order to speak to the police, who do not believe they are relevant to the enquiry.

Searches have concentrated in the areas near his last ping (except for one day when they moved to the south following a lead that was discredited)

Searches continued for several days, involving specialist teams, dogs and drones. Searches now called off, but the case remains open.

Why do we need to understand? Surely it's none of our business, really?

Puzzledandpissedoff · 01/07/2024 15:19

He was away “celebrating” the end of his community service for his part in a violent crime

Errr - what?? Confused

I thought this was just a bog sstandard lads' holiday, so is the above actually known or more media speculation?

This is completely common knowledge both on this thread and the previous ones. Just Google Tom Hilton Jay Slater.

prh47bridge · 01/07/2024 15:30

As others have said, the Rolex in this case is a watch, not a euphemism for drugs. There is nothing to link Slater to the Rolex. It is reported there was a scuffle, following which an Eastern European man has alleged that his Rolex watch has been stolen. There does not appear to be any evidence linking Slater to the scuffle or the Rolex. If there is, the police aren't saying anything about it.

Re the machete attack, reports say that Slater was on the periphery.

He was away “celebrating” the end of his community service for his part in a violent crime

Definitely not true. His community sentence is not yet over.
