Just stop oil morons

I've just seen 2 just stop oil idiots have vandalised stonehenge. Wtf is wrong with these utter morons?! I actually feel really angry and just a day before the solstice. I don't understand what they think this kind of stupidity achieves? Certainly not support for their cause and beliefs. The historian commenting said it best 'Parade your concern for the planet by destroying endangered lichens. Sympathy transmuted into utter loathing.'

They annoy me so much that it makes me want to use more oil/fossil fuels.

Darwinism in action…

RaininSummer · 19/06/2024 19:26

Destructive arses. They should be fined heavily, deducted from benefits if in receipt and not working, and they should all get a record for criminal damage.

Harvestfestivalknickers · 19/06/2024 19:28

The trouble with using phrases such as 'real and present emergency' doesn't really help their cause. It's all so alarmist.
Show people how they can make a difference, what is the actual present 'emergency'? Put some effort into MAKING a difference. Just stop with the pointless publicity stunts, nothing JSO do is making a POSITIVE improvement. They come out with the 'we're all doomed' rhetoric but we're still waiting for what they are actually DOING to help.

newnamethanks · 19/06/2024 19:40

Stones. They've been there for a few thousand years and will still be there when we are all dust. A bit of powder paint will cause no damage. Find something -better to worry about.

taylorswift1989 · 19/06/2024 19:50

That is so upsetting. This is our ancient history. Such an incredible, awe-inspiring place that makes you think about deep time and connects us to our ancestors.

What a horrendous thing to do.

I have zero sympathy with these people, I think their 'cause' is utter bullshit, and I hope that they get done for criminal damage and heavily fined.

I very much hope that it won't result in people being unable to walk among the stones at Stonehenge in future. What hateful, stupid people these 'protesters' are.

Like educating ourselves that they aren't just stones and they will have been damaged and definitely not remain in the condition they were before? Yeah... I'd recommend giving it a go. Such a stupid sounding post

Stones. Not contributing much to the 'real and present climate emergency'.

Ohanother1goodbye · 19/06/2024 15:38

Am I missing something. I see a photo of some orange powder, which reportedly dyed cornflour.
Where is the vandalism to Stonehenge?

Just stop oil webinars are public events where they talk about their policies and they are very clear that they wish their supporters to avoid doing anything that would break the law, so I would be surprised if any actual damage has been done.

So breaking the law is discouraged but delaying people getting to hospital is okay. Entitled twats.

FluffyJellyCat · 19/06/2024 20:08

Not rtft but what will happen if the girl is doing a degree at Oxford?

I agree with the cause but I think the actions are a bit tone deaf. What wouldn't they destroy for media cover?

Even us environmentalist hold other things dear, history, art, family. It seems nothing is too sacred to be attacked. Which I think goes too close to a terrorist like mind set.

Fosil fuel burning is one part of of cycle of self destruction. Evolve or die out.

Blackcats7 · 19/06/2024 20:10

I just posted on another thread which was calling the perpetrators terrorists.
I don’t agree with that description at all. They target things not people.
I think their actions are misguided in that it will put people off an important cause.
People need to wake up to climate change but I don’t think making a lot of people angry is going to help.

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 19/06/2024 20:18

I agree you are, not least because you’re being contemptuously disparaging

You say the sweetest things.

but if you comprehend that then you can see, from their point of view, why it’s ridiculous to be having the vapours over a historical monument when there is a real and present emergency right now that will put the same monument at as much risk as a bit of paint

That's their point of view and yours that it's ridiculous. Not mine. Frankly if I found myself in agreement with those morons on anything I'd worry.

The lichen that have developed on the stone are unlikely to survive such rapid environmental changes either

And almost certain that they won't survive what was sprayed on them today.; but I guess that's OK, as the motives are pure.

BashfulClam · 19/06/2024 20:41

Jail them for a month each and every time (really wish they could), once it inconveniences them they’d stop. I wouldn’t have freed the two fuds that glued themselves to Kelvingrove Museum. I’d have simply left them, after a few days of no food or liquid and sitting in their own mess I’m pretty sure they’d have peeled themselves off.

in the Uk when people glue themselves to the road etc a friendly police officer comes and frees them with glue dissolver. In France the police free their hands from the surface with their boot.

lolly792 · 19/06/2024 22:35

Fucking morons

Given the government has ordered the courts to try and avoid jailing anyone and effectively decriminalised rape, how likely do you think that is to happen?

Exactly, the logic evades me!

It also rather misses the point. Those JSO protestors that I know, couldn't give two hoots if they were in prison, they are mostly retired and have little to lose.

Hence why I said ‘I wish they could’ I know they won’t.

The simple fact you are discussing just stop oil means they have achieved their goal. Is that not obvious? They are not interested in a few MN members getting annoyed about it because if you are mentioning their cause there is more chance of it being debated by people who actually can influence their cause.

In the grand scheme of things i couldnt give a monkeys nuts about some rocks that have been placed in an unnatural formation for people to look at. If it helps people debate the worlds reliance on carbon based energy and the way we are effecting our own childrens future then crack on.

But people aren't discussing their cause, they're discussing the moronic actions of a couple of stupid numpties. It hasn't lead to a discussion about climate change with anyone I know in real life, just comments on the pathetic vandalism to an ancient monument.

All they're achieving is annoying people to the point that any message just stop oil are trying to get across is lost in their destructive, petty mischief making.

Is there much we need to discuss?

We know that climate change is happening and made, much, much worse by burning fossils fuels including oil and that we are not doing nearly enough to change.

FanFckingTastic · 19/06/2024 15:47

What are Just Stop Oil are hoping to achieve with these kind of stunts? I don't really know what their cause is and each time they do something like this I feel less and less inclined to engage.

They want people to talk about them. E.g. on Mumsnet threads.

Ohanother1goodbye · 20/06/2024 08:11

LordSnot · 20/06/2024 08:10

Sadly for them, no one is doing that. And certainly not repeating that we need to Just Stop (using) Oil.

RhubarbAndFlustered · 20/06/2024 08:30

You know how constant interruption of game apps or videos on social media by adverts makes you hate the product and think, I'll never buy from that fucking annoying company now because I'm sick of seeing their interrupting shit. Same thing.
Protesters being dickheads make me not give two shiny shits about their cause. It puts me right off.
Good on you Just stop oil. I care less about your cause than I ever did. Now if it was the rich oil companies you were attacking I'd be right behind you but you're disrupting average Joe's lives and attacking things that mean a lot to us all.

How did some cornflour and paint powder at Stonehenge disrupt your life?

So what are their actions for then?

They may be to point out that despite we knowing more than enough about the harmful effects of burning oil, people are too selfish to change?
