Just stop oil morons

Rumpelstilt · 19/06/2024 14:36

I've just seen 2 just stop oil idiots have vandalised stonehenge. Wtf is wrong with these utter morons?! I actually feel really angry and just a day before the solstice. I don't understand what they think this kind of stupidity achieves? Certainly not support for their cause and beliefs. The historian commenting said it best 'Parade your concern for the planet by destroying endangered lichens. Sympathy transmuted into utter loathing.'

Do you think stupidity is their motivation? Or just malice?

Isn't it just the unadulterated joy of the self righteous? A modern day martyr?

Cornettoninja · 19/06/2024 16:33

I find myself in an odd position with just stop oil. I know that the climate is changing, I can see and read about it with my own eyes and ears. I know that science has a sound reasoning for pointing in the direction of fossil fuels as a likely cause of irreversible damage that at best we can only limit now and yet….

I think I admire those who do take action under the banner of just stop oil. I can hold all the knowledge of what needs to be done for our best chances and be fearful of what that means but still manage to bury my head in the sand and carry on unaffected. I don’t really know why, it’s easier until there’s a problem I can’t avoid maybe? Yet here are a group of people who have that same knowledge and chose to be galvanised into action by that fear. The age and societal distribution is fascinating too.

aside from the publicity, their view is very much, here we are, getting all outraged over historical artefacts - why? Because we want future generations to have them? But we don’t care about the impact of oil on future generations?

the time is getting nearer that reserves of oil will be depleted (I believe we’ve already passed peak oil I.e supply will only dwindle from this point onwards) so now is the time to adjust our usage and sources of energy rather than when it’s foisted on us through scarcity.

Rumpelstilt · 19/06/2024 16:32

I do. I would've liked them to see stonehendge as it was before cretins damaged it. I'll raise my children to love our planet AND not be mindless cunts with no respect. Contrary to just stop oil members, both are actually possible

The ecosystems we rely on for human life are dying.

Your children will suffer for it if we don't do something drastic very soon. How are you dealing with that fact?

Rumpelstilt · 19/06/2024 16:35

It's not complicated. You don't break or damage things that aren't yours. Two wrongs don't make a right

I can’t engage with irrationality it is too frustrating.

I feel the same.

I don't damage things that arent mine and have basic respect for others. It serves me well

Ah, so they're not just enjoying being twats, as you put it before. They think they're doing good.

Do you have trouble with reading?

TheCadoganArms · 19/06/2024 16:37

I've explained upthread why they see all PR as good PR. You've basically picked out all the reasons they choose to act as they do, you just don't see why it's successful for them.

But it is not working is it. Even on this thread people are not talking about about the move away from fossil fuels, they are talking about the numpty protesters.

tobee · 19/06/2024 16:37

What are you doing @Begsthequestion ? And does it really make a difference?

What does doing this to Stonehenge actually achieve?

Why aren't they throwing their orange shite over places that actually have links with 'big oil'?

Just smacks of idiotic stunts.

They do all that - pouring stuff over places with links to Big Oil - but no one cares or hears about it.

Begsthequestion · 19/06/2024 16:40

tobee · 19/06/2024 16:37

I'm not sure what to do. I do admire JSO but I don't have it in me to join them right now. I'm not sure what to do about it. Except worry, really. And soon it'll be too late to do much.

ButterCrackers · 19/06/2024 16:41

Begsthequestion · 19/06/2024 16:32

We can use your example.

Do you think walking to Stonehenge and holding up a banner will get us off our current path towards ecological catastrophe?

What do you reply to your own question? I am against violence so obviously I would have seen that on the news and thought about the meaning. Seeing the destruction today makes me hope for prison for these idiots and that they pay the cost of their actions.
So the definitions as asked for before? No answer?

boombang · 19/06/2024 15:47

There is no membership to "just stop oil" - its just people who take up the name and protest however they like - if they follow the guidelines set out by the "Just stop oil" solicitors, they can get support legal support - that is the sum total of what membership of "Just stop oil" consists of.

It isn't a group as such

They used to get their expenses paid by someone. I'm not sure if that is still the case, I think the patron got a bit upset with some of the things they did.

EvangelicalAboutButteredToast · 19/06/2024 16:42

LauraNorda · 19/06/2024 15:29

Protesting is fine. Criminal damage is not. Throw the book at these morons.

It was fine when BLM were at it with the statues. I don’t even think those people were convicted. Lichen however seems to concern more people than dead colonolists.

So that's a no, then. You know that holding a banner is not going to change anything.

And I agree with you, it won't.

Can anyone suggest something we can legitimately do to prevent ecological disaster for the entire planet?

I'm hearing your condemnation and I'm looking out for solutions.

Invest in science. Have a level of acceptance that you can’t control everything and sometimes you have to just throw your hands in the air and hope for the best.

Perfect28 · 19/06/2024 16:48

The whole point is to do attention grabbing stunts to make headlines and get people talking, and here we are. I agree with them and i am terrified by our lack of effective climate action.
