Just stop oil morons

I've just seen 2 just stop oil idiots have vandalised stonehenge. Wtf is wrong with these utter morons?! I actually feel really angry and just a day before the solstice. I don't understand what they think this kind of stupidity achieves? Certainly not support for their cause and beliefs. The historian commenting said it best 'Parade your concern for the planet by destroying endangered lichens. Sympathy transmuted into utter loathing.'

I wish they'd stop reporting this and similar in the media. The reason they do it is for publicity.

The media already ignores most of their protests. So if they ignored this too, then they'd just do something else, wouldn't they?

I'm not sure a media blackout is the answer in any country, let alone the UK. We lack the authoritarian framework of China, for example.

ScoobyDoesnt · 19/06/2024 17:14

Agree with PP, stop reporting and giving them the time of day.

They should have their student loan / pension removed or not paid for a period to cover the cost of repair and clenaing, and be given a criminal record.

I'd also like to know how they got to Stonehenge - bet they drove in a non eco friendly car.

Begsthequestion · 19/06/2024 17:09

I agree, governments should do that. But I don't think they are. So how do we make them do it?

Vote for ones that care about climate change? The problem is environmental policies are largely unpopular as it tends to mean tax rises and inconvenience. Thats where the acceptance comes in. People are turkeys voting for Christmas mainly.

Perfect28 · 19/06/2024 17:19

@EvangelicalAboutButteredToast see it's the 'the planet has been through this before and been fine' narrative that really pisses me off. 1. No it hasn't, not on this scale, speed and for this reason. 2. You're Essentially saying it's fine if all humans are wiped out as the planet will continue. Fine, I guess, except that all humans is everyone you love and we are taking many many other innocent species out too.

Cornettoninja · 19/06/2024 17:19

Begsthequestion · 19/06/2024 17:11

I don't agree. I've never heard of animals willingly destroying their only habitat. Where do you get your theory from?

nature. Like I said, it’s not a perfect comparison since there isn’t another animal that has evolved along the same lines as humans with technology etc. and massive population explosions but I don’t think there is an animal that wouldn’t kill even it’s own species to protect their own territory and resources if it has the ability.

Given the age of a lot of protesters you might make more of a point removing their free bus pass.

I know you might find that upsetting but you’re right, I’m ultimately saying I have a level of acceptance (that you don’t share) for human life being wiped out alongside many other species.

Perfect28 · 19/06/2024 17:27

@EvangelicalAboutButteredToast I mean it's totally fine to have that view I guess, except the reality is having to 'survive' / experience the apocalypse with my child. I assume you don't have children?

EvangelicalAboutButteredToast · 19/06/2024 17:29

I do have children and yet I still am able to find acceptance. I guess it’s not that dissimilar to a wartime footing. Those generations were powerless. Life happened to them and to their children. I don’t think I’m so special that life won’t also happen to me. I’m powerless to stop climate change and so I accept it.

Harvestfestivalknickers · 19/06/2024 17:37

I'd be interested to see just how many people JSO have attracted to their cause. Has gluing themselves to roads, sitting on tube trains and chucking paint on snooker tables shone a light on what they are protesting about? Or have the media shown them to be hypocrites as they jump into their 30 year old diesel volvos and head back to Stroud after a hard days work bringing the traffic to a standstill in central London?

Tell me you haven't a fucking clue about Stonehenge and its archaelogical significance without telling me you haven't a fucking clue about Stonenhenge and its archaelogical significance.

I think I find it incomprehensible due to lifestyle but at the same time unavoidably likely. The world has been through what? Six mass extinction events? The odds are our species is going to have to face it at some point. I’ll retain a certain optimism that we can science our way out of it, but it’s also highly likely that will include an option off this planet that me and my descendants are unlikely to be invited on.

its very Hollywood to encourage us all to think that ‘we make it’ but no one really likes to concentrate on the lack of seats in these scenarios.

It won’t have any significance at all if the climates gone to shit and humans are reduced to scavenging.

Know anything about the period in which Stonehenge was erected, do you? and I'm talking about now and damage to a Unesco Heritage Site by morons.

As a matter of interest, if climate goes to shit, what's there going to be to scavenge?

The ones that disrupt weddings annoy me . How selfish and rude to try and mar someone's big day and happy occasion

Couldn't agree more. They are just attention seekers which these days they only seem to get from GBeebies who appear to talk over them in any case - although I have never paused on that channel long enough to pay any attention whilst channel hopping

I reckon their intelligence can be deduced from the bloke I saw the other day outside the local pub; wearing a Just Stop Oil T shirt (probably polyester) and drinking out of a plastic beer mug.

But it's true. Humans will eventually be wiped out. The dinosaurs roamed the earth for far longer than we have. It's a bit arrogant of humans and extinction rebellion to presume they can stop our extinction. They can't, and we can't. The point of looking after the environment, imo is to not make our existence on earth completely intolerable, for me and my children and possibly grandchildren. Unfortunately, eventually, something will wipe out the human race. We will not hobyo another planet. We will, in all likelihood, cease to exist and be replaced a few hundred years later by another species.

I think most people are thinking they're a bunch of complete wankers. Any support or sympathy I may have had for them and their cause is long gone...

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 19/06/2024 18:25

I'm all in favour of the aims of the campaign but what the fuck were they thinking? I was appalled to see that they'd done that.

They are simply proving once again that they are as thick as shit.

The odd stray dog and rat I imagine.

my, or your, historical knowledge has little to do with anything. I would imagine that a large part of the protesters thought process was highlighting the hypocrisy of elevating history over the present and future.

To be clear, I don’t particularly agree with them but they make a pretty clear point that you’ll only miss if you wilfully try to.

I agree you are, not least because you’re being contemptuously disparaging.

You don’t appear to be stupid so I will assume on some level you understand the facts behind JSO even if you don’t agree with their methods, but if you comprehend that then you can see, from their point of view, why it’s ridiculous to be having the vapours over a historical monument when there is a real and present emergency right now that will put the same monument at as much risk as a bit of paint.

The lichen that have developed on the stone are unlikely to survive such rapid environmental changes either.
