Just stop oil morons

I've just seen 2 just stop oil idiots have vandalised stonehenge. Wtf is wrong with these utter morons?! I actually feel really angry and just a day before the solstice. I don't understand what they think this kind of stupidity achieves? Certainly not support for their cause and beliefs. The historian commenting said it best 'Parade your concern for the planet by destroying endangered lichens. Sympathy transmuted into utter loathing.'

The simple fact you are discussing just stop oil means they have achieved their goal. Is that not obvious? They are not interested in a few MN members getting annoyed about it because if you are mentioning their cause there is more chance of it being debated by people who actually can influence their cause.

In the grand scheme of things i couldnt give a monkeys nuts about some rocks that have been placed in an unnatural formation for people to look at. If it helps people debate the worlds reliance on carbon based energy and the way we are effecting our own childrens future then crack on.

If their goal was to inspire people from all factions of life to unite in their condemnation of their idiotic tactics, then that's a job well done. Well played.

That’s quite a leap- do you honestly think those who were thinking about voting Green will Joe vote For Reform?

I didn't say that. I said the only thing they achieve are more votes for Reform. Reform members will be rubbing their hands in glee at this latest stunt because it adds to their general selling point that the lefties are stupid, no respect for culture, etc.

Goldenbear · 19/06/2024 16:05

ShorterWorkingYear · 19/06/2024 16:00

That's a bit strong

Yes, I agree, we do still live in a democracy in this country where people can have an opinion that differs from your own or even that they can choose to be Vegans or undertake ‘Arts degrees’ as another poster seems to be inferring this is some kind of crime!😳

MagnetCarHair · 19/06/2024 16:06

AccidentallyWesAnderson · 19/06/2024 16:03

Is anyone talking about their cause? Or debating reliance on carbon based energy?

Or are we just saying they are arseholes.

I doubt if one solitary person who has seen that self gratifying display of vandalism masquerading as moral righteousness and thought, do you know what, I'm going to leave the car at home today.

Prawncow · 19/06/2024 16:06

Their stunts make it easy to dismiss them and by association other environmental campaigners. They make themselves look like irrational zealots.

That wasn't inferred. I said they were walking cliches. They were however, criminals yes.

Well I’m sorry but you (generic you) would have to be pretty thick to let yourself be influenced by something that is not being carried out by a political party.

dangerrabbit · 19/06/2024 16:07

TheCadoganArms · 19/06/2024 15:45

Their targets for protests are spectacularly poorly selected insofar as pulling the public onside with their cause. I don't think big oil could have wished for a better anti fossil fuel lobby then this bunch of middle class hobby protest twats.

Yes funny that 🤔

What does doing this to Stonehenge actually achieve?

Main item on the News, which is what their intention was .

ClaudiaWankleman · 19/06/2024 16:09

The stunt has been successful - they've been on every major news outlet and you're talking about them here. Being talked about is the aim - it often takes years to successfully build political consciousness and keeping the name and the aims in people's minds is the best way to do that. Every time they get someone to think/ comment/ say 'I agree with the aims, not the method' they've had some success, because that 'I agree with the aim' adds to the conversation as another voice supporting climate policies.

You a living up to a stereotype yourself with that post!

Hardly. It was my personal experience.

Thank you butterpuffed. In answer to all those who ask what it achieved. This is what it achieved. The fact the majority on here disagree with the actions is another debate. They have been successful in their objective. My guess is that their cause will now be debated on a few major tv networks up and down the country regardless of its lack of popularity.

TeenagersAngst · 19/06/2024 16:11

But we all know that 'any publicity is good publicity' simply doesn't stand up to scrutiny.

Yes, we're talking about them but only to discuss our intense dislike of their actions. I can't see any meaningful discussion on this thread about climate change.

I very much disagree. The people saying "I agree with their aims" are already aware of the problem. Those who are yet to be persuaded to care about the environment and climate change will not be swayed by this, they'll dig their heels in even further to dismiss it as idiots banging on about nothing.

GennyLec · 19/06/2024 15:33

The wanton damage is shocking. I have no real idea of their cause, so that's a fail isn't it. Stupid people.

It's Just Stop Oil. They want to stop oil. Because it is causing shocking wanton damage to the environment everywhere.

tobee · 19/06/2024 16:15

"In the grand scheme of things i couldnt give a monkeys nuts about some rocks that have been placed in an unnatural formation for people to look at. "

Well this just makes you look dumb. Which I'm sure you didn't intend.

ButterCrackers · 19/06/2024 16:16

These vandals should be paid to pay for the police investigation, the assessment of damage to this ancient structure, the cost of repairing the damage and all other costs. Let them be made by court order to use the money from their houses and savings on this (or do their principals allow them to live off the state?) and/or be made to pay from their benefits. What scum. They could have peacefully protested and got support. I don’t support vandalism and it’s terrible to damage and ruin such a historic place.

needhelpwiththisplease · 19/06/2024 16:16

Did they walk there carrying them fire extinguishers or are they allowed to use vehicles for vandalism??
Hypocritical twats!!

But you are suggesting that an Arts degree, eating a vegan diet is somehow relevant to the crime they were in custody for when it is completely irrelevant, it makes those things sound intrinsically flawed whereas actually you just want to spread your dislike of all those things a bit more!

LakeTiticaca · 19/06/2024 16:17

It's time the police and the judiciary got tough on these morons and gave out proper sentences. I wonder how they got to stone henge? I bet they didn't walk it!!

No, it's relevant to them as clueless middle class protestors.

We might all be aware of the problem, but that doesn't mean it enters public consciousness the way that publicity stunts force them to. There's a huge swath of people between climate activists (including much more moderate people) and climate denialists who are just quite agnostic or apathetic about the whole thing. These kind of stunts force engagement from those people in a way that polite conversation doesn't.

Do peaceful protests change anything?

Our home is at stake. So I'd love to know how we can actually save it.

MagnetCarHair · 19/06/2024 16:19

If all publicity were good publicity then surely the support of just stop oil would maxing out now in both number and enthusiasm after the recent prolific run of disruption - and yet, I see no evidence of that. In fact, it seems quite the opposite.
