Just stop oil morons

Rumpelstilt · 19/06/2024 14:36

I've just seen 2 just stop oil idiots have vandalised stonehenge. Wtf is wrong with these utter morons?! I actually feel really angry and just a day before the solstice. I don't understand what they think this kind of stupidity achieves? Certainly not support for their cause and beliefs. The historian commenting said it best 'Parade your concern for the planet by destroying endangered lichens. Sympathy transmuted into utter loathing.'

Attention-seeking snot-goblins about sums it up.

Am I missing something. I see a photo of some orange powder, which reportedly dyed cornflour.
Where is the vandalism to Stonehenge?

Just stop oil webinars are public events where they talk about their policies and they are very clear that they wish their supporters to avoid doing anything that would break the law, so I would be surprised if any actual damage has been done.

Their targets for protests are spectacularly poorly selected insofar as pulling the public onside with their cause. I don't think big oil could have wished for a better anti fossil fuel lobby then this bunch of middle class hobby protest twats.

It's dye that is going to have to be removed somehow, which may well damage the stones and ruin the ancient patina and there is ancient endangered lichen on the stones which may well be killed by the dye.

boombang · 19/06/2024 15:45

They have not damaged Stone henge - they have discoloured it slightly and temporarily- get a grip

Ohanother1goodbye · 19/06/2024 15:46

Rumpelstilt · 19/06/2024 15:42

Ohhhh right. The orange substance that'd been all over them since the neolithic period, right? Oh no wait.... Ffs

If I threw anything over you, it's assault. People shouldn't be thick twats a vandalise things that aren't theirs

Eta unless they are qualified archaeologists or geologists who have taken samples of that exact stone they threw it over, they have no idea of the damage it would cause. They don't care

Edited

What if the orange substance, which is reportedly harmless, is less damaging than the pollution from the nearby road that Stonehenge is subjected to each day?

No3387 · 19/06/2024 15:46

Ohanother1goodbye · 19/06/2024 15:40

In the interests of factual accuracy, can we be clear what was wrecked?

Likely the lichen as mentioned already on the thread

Rumpelstilt · 19/06/2024 15:47

boombang · 19/06/2024 15:45

Do you know it's temporary for a fact? No? Exactly.

If I punched you in the face and you got a black eye... Its temporary so get a grip? Didn't think so

People shouldn't damage things that aren't theirs. It's not a difficult concept

There is no membership to "just stop oil" - its just people who take up the name and protest however they like - if they follow the guidelines set out by the "Just stop oil" solicitors, they can get support legal support - that is the sum total of what membership of "Just stop oil" consists of.

It isn't a group as such

FanFckingTastic · 19/06/2024 15:47

What are Just Stop Oil are hoping to achieve with these kind of stunts? I don't really know what their cause is and each time they do something like this I feel less and less inclined to engage.

That's completely different than an active act of vandalism. Really daft comparison but nice try

What does doing this to Stonehenge actually achieve?

Why aren't they throwing their orange shite over places that actually have links with 'big oil'?

Just smacks of idiotic stunts.

LizzieBennett73 · 19/06/2024 15:55

That has made me irrationally angry. I'm hoping that today is the day that they went too far.

WallaceinAnderland · 19/06/2024 15:57

Stupid wankers. Not a brain cell between them.

GasPanic · 19/06/2024 15:57

AccidentallyWesAnderson · 19/06/2024 15:38

That's the argument, but it doesn't get people talking about 'the cause'. It gets people, like me, to think 'they are cunts' and as a result I've no interest in their cause.

As an aside, I work in custody and I the ones I countered were walking cliches - posh, double-barrelled surnames, vegan, in uni doing art degrees with seemingly little life experience. They don't have a clue.

Those stones will have to be cleaned. That will modify the surface.

It will be hard to clean the orange paint off all the cracks and pores in the stone. They will probably have to blast it off with water and they will modify the surface in the process and also damage the flora on the surface. It will probably weather back to the original state eventually after many years. But it won't look the same for that period and will look a mess.

You can't just chuck stuff on surfaces and expect it not to interact in some way or be easy to remove. Especially natural surfaces. Artificial surfaces you may get away with not causing some long lasting issues. Maybe stuff stainless steel, glass and PTFE.

This - stupid stunts turn me off their cause completely

JennyBeanR · 19/06/2024 15:58

I'm so tired of them. They have made people who care about the climate look like idiots by proxy. I hope the greens and other legitimate groups distance themselves from these morons.

The only thing their stunts achieve is more votes for parties like Reform.

That's a bit strong

Tessasanderson · 19/06/2024 16:02

The simple fact you are discussing just stop oil means they have achieved their goal. Is that not obvious? They are not interested in a few MN members getting annoyed about it because if you are mentioning their cause there is more chance of it being debated by people who actually can influence their cause.

In the grand scheme of things i couldnt give a monkeys nuts about some rocks that have been placed in an unnatural formation for people to look at. If it helps people debate the worlds reliance on carbon based energy and the way we are effecting our own childrens future then crack on.

That’s quite a leap- do you honestly think those who were thinking about voting Green will Joe vote For Reform?

Exactly. Or I don't know, holding protests outside parliament or even the offices of big corporations 🤔 It's almost like they are Tory plants based on how effective their messaging is.

Prawncow · 19/06/2024 16:02

I think their tactics are stupid generally but attacking Stonehenge was mindless vandalism. They may have caused permanent damage.

Exactly this. They are not just damaging an ancient monument to all things environmental, they are damaging the cause of those legitimately trying to address the climate change problem, making more and more people turn away from it thinking we're all just idiots. How stupid can you be? They seem to be educated people who are involved in these stunts, but they are at the same time absolutely thick.

How sad that some people's objective is for others to think 'what a bunch of thick cunts'. It won't be just a couple of people on here, there will be a LOT. So well done, mission accomplished

Is anyone talking about their cause? Or debating reliance on carbon based energy?

Or are we just saying they are arseholes.
