It’s May next week. The longest day of the year in seven weeks.

It’a currently 8 degrees and raining.

I am still wear my winter wardrobe.

This must be the worst spring on record. Where is the sun.

I am past being upset or depressed, just damn right furious! Can't do the spring clean even. Normally, I would wash all the heavy household textiles and air them outside, which was not possible until now, and does not look possible still. I swear there was not a single dry day this year! We get sunny spells daily as it is so windy on the coast, but those are so short-lived! Absolutely not enough to dry a heavy woven throw or a dog bed. And it rains about five times a day anyway, not always a proper downpour, but that permanent piss spray suspended in the air does not leave much for gardening or anything. Ugh.

Looking at the forecast it does seem to be the last miserable day today. Temperatures rising to 18 and no rain next week!

Yes, that seems be forecast in London, thank God.

'Spring' 2013 was like this and I think for similar reason - big area of low pressure blocking warmer airflow and bringing in cold air from the far North. Hopefully it's sodding off and I can turn the heating off totally next week.

I've had pie filling on my coat for 2 weeks because I need the coat and can't get it dry quick enough while it's so cold and damp haha

I know April can be a bit odd weather wise but this one has really been strange. Last week was sunshine and hailstones for days. It’s pissed down most of the weekend. Now the sun is out but it’s going to drop to 5 degrees tonight. I can’t keep up!

April is usually really mixed. In 2021 I have photos of at least 1cm snow in SE England on 12th April followed by sunshine and shorts weather a couple of weeks later

RampantIvy · 28/04/2024 17:02

We don't turn the heating on and off as it is thermostatically controlled. It hasn't not come on yet because it has been so cold.

DrinksbytheSea · 28/04/2024 17:17

I’ve managed to get a bit sunburnt today. It was raining this morning but this afternoon was glorious.

BluebirdBoogie · 28/04/2024 17:21

sashagabadon · 28/04/2024 09:40

We had a terrible spring in 2012 as I can remember the Olympic torch travelling round the U.K. in torrential winds and heavy rain almost everywhere then it miraculously perked up for the actual Olympics.
hope it’s not a repeat of 2012

Yes, I remember that. We decided to go touring/,camping for 2 weeks. East of England - rain. North East - rain. Highlands of Scotland - rain. Glasgow - rain. Lake District - rain. Buxton - really sunny. Not really, it rained. We came home 5 days early as we couldn't take any more.

Why did who change what from global warming?

Yes, I’ll waste my energy on someone being fucking obtuse.

SunAndAColdBracingWind · 28/04/2024 09:10

But it’s April? Not summer yet. You have June, July and august to come and it’s often warm into September.

Yes and wasn't October unseasonably warm, parts anyway?

Fair enough - I shouldn’t have wasted my energy on someone who can’t write a coherent fucking point 🤷🏼‍♀️

Topofthemountain · 28/04/2024 21:55

Well, that escalated quickly.

On a good note, the rain stopped and I could trudge around my garden a bit in the late evening.

colouringindoors · 28/04/2024 21:56

Another awful cold, wet day here. I'm wearing thermal leggings and a thick jumper 🙄

And if the jet stream stalls we are truly screwed in the UK. Then it's Siberian winters all round.

But hey no one really cares, not really, not enough people anyway.

We are tying to convince the nippers north America looks like a better place for adult life!

North America? It's become so dystopian there.

JamSandle · 28/04/2024 22:00

thegrumpusch · 28/04/2024 12:57

truly, we live on a cursed isle

I dont know why this made me laugh.🤣

SoupDragon · 29/04/2024 08:56

Here's a headline from the Guardian:

‘Washout winter’ spells price rises for UK shoppers with key crops down by a fifth

Are people still going to say it's all as expected and lovely?

CruCru · 29/04/2024 09:31

RampantIvy · 28/04/2024 14:25

Oh do go away.

Have you even read the posts about the dire state of farming due to the weather?

In fairness, that poster saying she enjoys rain doesn’t make it any more or less likely to rain. I love crisp, sunny September weather but it was boiling last September.

Arraminta · 29/04/2024 09:57

OldTinHat · 28/04/2024 09:03

Oh - and I'm currently having my garden overhauled at great expense because it's been a bramble jungle for two years. All in anticipation of a fabulous summer and being able to sit outside. Ha flipping ha!

Yes, I know for a fact that this crap weather is purely down to us buying some smart new garden furniture this year. I swear the second I clicked Purchase the sky started to cloud over and hasn't cleared since. It's all still in the garage wrapped up, absolutely no point putting it out in the garden. Maybe next year? x

BogRollBOGOF · 29/04/2024 11:35

We bought a new, reduced BBQ at the end of season in September 2022. We got it home and it began to drizzle. I think we've used it about 3 times since.

It's not so much that this April has been unusually awful in isolation; it's a very mixed month that can be beautiful, but can also have anything going including snow. It's the fact that it's seamlessly followed the cool, grey wet pattern that we've had near relentlessly since July last year. We've already had the wettest 12 months on record, and it's still above averagely wet.

My local parkrun has been a mud-pit for 6 months. Another one still has black dead patchs of dead grass after months of standing water after October's floods. I've got mud on the roof of my car from trying to park in an open field for an event yesterday because of the 12 hours of torrential rain.

More critically, the local fields I run through have huge swathes where the crops haven't grown because of the constant saturation, and there seems to be more fallow fields than usual- presumably the farmers have missed their windows for a crop cycle or not taken the risk of poor returns for an intended crop.

Quality outdoor clothing does not solve all weather issues!

Exactly.

CosmosQueen · 30/04/2024 06:06

The BBC long range forecast doesn’t hold out any hope for better weather before June, more rain, low temperatures or barely at average in sight.
May isn’t going to be any better than what we have been having 😵‍💫🤬

Yes I looked at the long range for my area (Gloucestershire), the same weather as now until end of May 😱

Beezknees · 30/04/2024 07:57

It seems to be improving here this week, 18 degrees today but lots of rain forecast on Friday.

hellswelshy · 30/04/2024 08:48

Rainy and grey here in S Wales and looks to be the same for at least the rest of the week. When will it end?? April showers I can deal with but it's the constant grey...🙄
