It’s May next week. The longest day of the year in seven weeks.

It’a currently 8 degrees and raining.

I am still wear my winter wardrobe.

This must be the worst spring on record. Where is the sun.

We were discussing the weather in the office as we watched a hailstorm through the window. Points made that this is totally unusual, however on that day my FB memories had spoken about it being so cold you could see someone's breath, and blizzards. A couple of days ago we had snow (2017 I think).

The amount of rain is perhaps more unusual, but it certainly isn't always warm and sunny this time of year.

Yes I agree - I have horses and April is notoriously changeable - I chuck the horses out without rugs into the glorious sunshine and then we have a hailstorm, it has always been like this.

However, it’s been raining consistently since October and I think that it what is compounding the general mood.

ordinarily we would have spring crops established, up in rows and top dressed and you will notice as you drive around the country there is a terrifying amount of land which is fallowed or only just cultivated/drilled.

The lack of crop will have a direct impact later on this year, I’ve never known such a long poor growing season.

I went out yesterday with just a denim jacket thinking I'd be fine. I was absolutely bloody freezing!!

frozendaisy · 28/04/2024 10:14

It's just worse at the weekend, don't really care in the week.

Startingagainandagain · 28/04/2024 10:14

I am on the South East (Kent coast) and it is raining and windy again today. It has been like that for months with the odd sunny day.

At least it is getting a bit warmer it seems.

I really don't know how people in the North and Scotland are coping wit this.

It really is quite depressing.

It isn't getting warmer here in South Yorkshire. It is currently 4 degrees and windy and rainy.

I went out last night and wore a winter dress with a warm scarf that I used as a shrug, and a winter coat.

I'm on the outskirts of London, and we had a very spring-like week a couple of weeks ago. It wasn't hot (it's not meant to be in April!) but it was bright.

This is the weather for me next week, which doesn't look too bad?

For me it looks like the temperature is going to rise a little but it's just yet another week of daily rain.

OMG the weather
Bluevelvetsofa · 28/04/2024 10:18

On the plus side, my bank balance will thank me as there’s absolutely no need to buy any summer clothes.

MistyGreenAndBlue · 28/04/2024 10:18

I looked out of my bedroom window this morning and remarked to DH that if it weren't for the leaves on the trees being green, you would think it was October.

Another laundry day wasted. I think it was sunny-ish last week though.
But yes, sick of the endless rain and gloom now. And I'm a summer hater.
In the east Midlands btw

ColourByNumbers88 · 28/04/2024 10:19

@Startingagainandagain in Scotland we are coping well because the sun is out (has been out for a week) and there is warmth in it. I had to wear an SPF yesterday! It won't last...

Octavia64 · 28/04/2024 10:20

East Anglia.

I'm at home all the time and I've managed to sit out in the garden about 4 times this year, largely by going outside with a cup of tea immediately the big yellow round thing in the sky comes out.
The rest of the time it has been raining or cold,

I'm working on the garden at the moment - moved in last summer and it was all either paved or astroturfed.

I have some plants in pots but don't dare leave them outside yet.

RampantIvy · 28/04/2024 10:21

I'm just waiting for the backlash on the "I hate summer" posts that will inevitably appear once the thermometer hits 20 degrees.

Oblomov24 · 28/04/2024 10:21

Raining and miserable, it's really starting to get me down now.

AhBiscuits · 28/04/2024 10:22

Our forecast says the rain is going to get a bit warmer this week. I guess that's a plus.

WoodBurningStov · 28/04/2024 10:27

I'm just so pissed off with the rain... don't mind it being cold but I wish this rain would just fuck if.

We're trying to landscape the garden and build a garden wall, it should've taken us a couple of weeks, but it's been months now due to not being able to start anything because it's been so wet. I've also got dogs and horses, by this time it's usually dry with no mud, but I'm still knee deep in mud in the paddock, and have to wash the dogs off before I let them in the house. It's just awful.

I went to Edinburgh this time last year and it was a gorgeous weekend, we were all in white cropped jeans or summer dresses. I think if I went there now I'd have to take my big coat. I'll be wearing jeans and boots.

Movinghouseatlast · 28/04/2024 10:28

I'm finding it SO depressing. Normally by this time of year we've had some nice stretches of sunny days.

I love summer, I love summer clothes and I'm sick and tired of my bloody coat.

ShiftySquirrel · 28/04/2024 10:29

I could handle April better if it actually was changeable, but the constant grey and rain is depressing.
I can't even get washing dry in the south facing conservatory, let alone outside on the line.
Warmer but just as wet next week for us.

TimeInBlue · 28/04/2024 10:30

RampantIvy · 28/04/2024 08:54

Depressing isn't it.

All the summer haters will be rubbing their hands with glee.

I feel for the poor farmers who are losing lambs and who can't plant anything.

I’m not too keen on summer usually but even I’m sick to death of this weather ☹️

piscofrisco · 28/04/2024 10:32

I'm fed up. I've worked hard on prepping our garden this year and vowing things from seed and I'm desperate to plant them out and see what it will all look like. But it's too wet and cold and now I have seedlings all over the place which is also doing my head in.
And it's just utterly depressing.

FragileWookiee · 28/04/2024 10:33

My husband is a bricklayer. It's bad enough that house building has slowed right down but when the days are just endless rain and you can't get out to work it's even more depressing.

User284732 · 28/04/2024 10:33

I don't think the weather is that unusual for April. Going by my photos, my children typically start wearing shorts at the end of April. Mine wore shorts yesterday for the first time. We usually get the first hot weather/need for sun screen May bank holiday weekend.

TheValueOfEverything · 28/04/2024 10:42

This weather is the result of climate change. The year on year trend is that it will get worse

The good news is that that trend can be stopped with climate action policies from governments. This is the big election year globally. Folks, we’d better be voting and making your voices heard accordingly.

When your grandkids asked what you did, don’t just say you moaned on mumsnet. There’s a Real, Finite, chance to stop the weather getting any worse in years to come.

CruCru · 28/04/2024 10:45

I am in central London. My weather app shows that next week it’ll get to 17/18/19 C with a mixture of rain and sun. I’ll take that.

RainbowZebraWarrior · 28/04/2024 10:47

Raining and cold here on the NE coast of England. I'm still in bed drinking endless cups of tea while snuggling with the cat and letting DD sleep in as long as she wants. In many ways, it's nice as there's no pressure to be anywhere, and being snug indoors is quite pleasing when you hear the rain lashing against the window.

I'd written off today due to the forecast. Thankfully, I had the energy yesterday to 'make hay while the sun shone' and got a lot done. Only finishing outside when it got dark at 9pm.

Lovelynames123 · 28/04/2024 10:48

Friday and Saturday morning I had to de-ice my windscreen, north east! Off out shortly to celebrate my birthday, wearing boots, jeans, jumper and down jacket😭I feel like it's rained here since October, and doesn't seem to have an end in sight...off to Turkey in 3 weeks, can't bloody wait!
