It makes total sense to close the Steel works and drastically reduce the UKs ability to produce it.

Exporting it from countries like China who are supporting Russia in Ukraine is a great shout for a time we should be looking at our military capability.

Obviously having steel made in foreign countries and exported halfway around the world is great for the environment, far better than making it in the country it will be used in.

The bonus is nearly 2000 more people to call scroungers when they lose their jobs.

What happened to the taxpayers money that has been invested in this? Whose pockets did this line?

Sunak must be feeling happy with himself and his government over such a good job, so happy he can laugh in worried people's faces as he thinks it's all funny.

Article from September, the warnings were there.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-66819458

Yes, that article reads a little differently to me today.

AdamRyan · 20/01/2024 18:13

Wouldn't be at all surprised if in part the Tories have done this to do a "look at Welsh unemployment figures under Welsh Labour" come election time

DuncinToffee · 20/01/2024 18:21

Ex First Minister Carwyn Jones

Lay-offs in Port Talbot are due to Brexit and not Net Zero

“The Net Zero argument is utter nonsense”

Farage, Johnson and Gove all stated that Brexit would save UK steel pre referendum.

DuncinToffee · 20/01/2024 18:47

What do those experts know..

Piggywaspushed · 21/01/2024 08:48

I'm sharing this because it hasn't had anything like the attention of the PO scandal , and is even longer running . Very underpublicised that the government lost a vote on this

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-67615379

Since then, it has been delayed further...

Campaigners protesting in London

Ministers lose infected blood vote after Tory MPs revolt

MPs were voting on a plan to set up a compensation scheme for infected blood scandal victims.

Zonder · 21/01/2024 09:23

Wow thanks for posting that @Piggywaspushed - hard to believe the vote was so close. The government really don't give a shit about people.

BIossomtoes · 21/01/2024 09:32

It’s dreadful and has been going on for decades. It deserves its own thread @Piggywaspushed, I knew about the scandal but it hasn’t been in the news much.

That Lammy thread is Tory Central, do those people’s radios not have an off button?

40 years. People dying weekly.

Still not paying out - & this article includes fairly strong hints that they are deliberately stalling payments.

Infected blood scandal compensation payments still not available www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-67755069

Notonthestairs · 21/01/2024 10:30

Amazing that the Op on the Lammy thread just plopped and left.

LBC seems to have sufficient presenters to irritate everyone - I guess that means it's balanced!

DuncinToffee · 21/01/2024 10:32

Our local news has covered a lot of the blood scandal as boys from a local residential college we infected, it's heartbreaking and the government should be ashamed with that vote.

cakeorwine · 21/01/2024 10:33

Maybe another ITV drama

With quotes from Hansard

Piggywaspushed · 21/01/2024 10:43

It's so sad that I also thought that only an ITV drama would help.

But maybe HIV deaths and blood transfusions to teenagers aren't as palatable as nice middle class sub postmistresses with helpful Tory MPs.

Sorry , that was deeply cynical.

In a cabinet of tools, Shapps isn't one of the sharpest.

Poor thing. Maths isn’t his strong point, is it? It’s a bit concerning in the Minister for Defence.

Ah that's their line - Labour Lords, enemies of the people etc etc.

But...

Thread 35 - Sunak, the squatter
Piggywaspushed · 21/01/2024 12:04

Ah, yes but those Tories are practically the loony Left, What with their ideas about democracy and the rule of law.

Notonthestairs · 21/01/2024 12:04

However, I don't doubt that a lot of Tory peers don't contribute to debates or bother to vote.

Maybe that is what Schapps meant.

Notonthestairs · 21/01/2024 12:05

Oh I see - wrong kind of Tory.
