Thanks @BIossomtoes

IClaudine · 05/01/2024 10:41

Over in the Anyone Watching Starmer thread, they have resorted to "in Labour run Wales".

Please don't say that @AdamRyan , I don't think I can stand another whole year if them.☹️

DuncinToffee · 05/01/2024 10:46

I notice that on all the Starmer threads, nobody is mentioning the Tories achievements and why we should continue to vote for them.

There was some reporting he'd been advised not to go for Autumn because of the security risk of having US and UK both distracted by elections/change of government

I’m sure I’ve read that somewhere too, a while back actually.

Given the run of absurd shite his other bold, I-do-what-I-like-cause-I’m- PM, moves have caused I’m going to brace for some massive national security issues in the autumn. Well played sir, that’s probably the one bingo square you haven’t played on your fuck the uk card.

Cornettoninja · 05/01/2024 10:47

Thanks for the thread @BIossomtoes.

excellent title too @IClaudine - you’re right to be proud!

I still think it will be May. It will be interesting to see how Rwanda plays out.

I am also curious as to what is happening with all the Tory MPs who were told to delay stepping down (to avoid the stench of death). The timings of those may indicate the actual date.

Haha... I don't know why I found 'the stench of death' so funny in your post... but I did!

medianewbie · 05/01/2024 10:48

Very Excellent thread title ! (thanks)

medianewbie · 05/01/2024 10:54

I think his 'working assumption' comment is because he would like to hang on till year end but depending on resignations/ Rwanda nonsense/ polls etc he may have to go earlier. He's not as in control as he'd like (us) to think.

That’s a really good point @Roussette, the autumn is peak pensioner holiday time, isn’t it? We usually go away in October, I’ll be incandescent if the election is during our holiday.

I’m away rather a lot in May. I’ll be gutted too, though obvs I’ll get a postal vote. Looking forward to watching seats fall though…

I think you’re safe with 24 May, it’s a Friday. Might be the day before though, although my money’s on the 2nd, same day as the locals.

Works for me. I don’t go away until after that! Fingers crossed you are correct. Would make sense.

EffieeBriest · 05/01/2024 10:18

@IIdentifyAsInnocent why will you grit your teeth if you vote labour ?

Because I disagree with their TWAW policy and the fact that they are giving away single sex spaces on the basis of people's (mainly male) "feels".

In his speech yesterday, Starmer confirmed that single sex space are safe.

It was also confirmed at the Labour conference back in September.

pointythings · 05/01/2024 11:41

@IIdentifyAsInnocent thing is, the Tories have done exactly the same thing, so no gritted teeth needed. Your choice is between the party that tried to expand self ID courtesy of one T. May, and which continues to implement policies tgat damage women disproportionately (i.e. paid leave rights for part time workers), or the party that brought in the NMW and SureStart. No brainer if you're a thinking woman.

DuncinToffee · 05/01/2024 11:56

John Crace

Starmer isn’t promising a revolution. He’s not that kind of guy. Much of what he is promising is more of the same, only done properly. Done decently. He isn’t a voice of protest. He is a voice of government. And after 14 years of the Tories, that’s a relief.

Rish!’s five pledges became five vague aspirations and now … nada | John Crace

It’s almost as if Sunak is ashamed of his record and slipping under the radar as Starmer takes the initiative

That's a very reasonable summary from Crace.
Practical, workable, thoughtful politics please.

Cornettoninja · 05/01/2024 12:12

I think Crace has summed up what’s on offer from Kier Starmers Labour very nicely.

I was listening to Chris Mason yesterday talking about what an odd turn of phrase Sunak used. A 'working assumption' is usually made about something that is controlled by someone else. He's the PM so he decides when the GE happens!

It is possible he is unaware he is the PM?

They seem to require me to state the law of the land as though I am some kind of oracle.

BeadedBubbles · 05/01/2024 12:27

It is possible he is unaware he is the PM?

Possible he realises he is PM in name only and he has to wait for those really in charge to tell him when he can call it.
