Thanks Blossom!

Good morning and thank you!

L1ttledrummergirl · 05/01/2024 08:33

Thanks @BIossomtoes.

Roussette · 05/01/2024 08:36

Thanks Blossom. I think this is going to be a very busy thread.... my personal opinion on the next GE is that Sunak was deflecting yesterday. I think a GE will be May time. Purely for the reason, a lot of retired and elderly people go on their hols September/October after the school holidays are over and he couldn't risk losing their vote!
That is just me musing and probably tosh!

BeadedBubbles · 05/01/2024 08:40

I was listening to Chris Mason yesterday talking about what an odd turn of phrase Sunak used. A 'working assumption' is usually made about something that is controlled by someone else. He's the PM so he decides when the GE happens!

Thanks Blossom Brew

Checking in! Thank you!

That’s a really good point @Roussette, the autumn is peak pensioner holiday time, isn’t it? We usually go away in October, I’ll be incandescent if the election is during our holiday.

Something to brighten up a dull morning

https://x.com/DamianLow3/status/1742902682933686639?s=20

It’s a good start to 2024 for Labour as their lead increases to 17 points in our latest @wethinkpolling poll.

These are numbers no govt wants going into an election year. The 2 point increase for the Reform Party will also have the govt worried.

I agree. We go away September and whilst I can do a postal vote, I want to be around to follow it with my eyes propped open with matchsticks!

I just don't think Sunak will leave it as late as October because things aren't going to get much better.

That'll be me too with the matchsticks 😅 I was wondering whether it would be on May 24th my wedding day...Hopefully not lol

Oh wow, I do hope not! Good vibes coming from me to avoid that special date!

5thCommandment · 05/01/2024 09:25

The election will be in May, after the tax cuts in March. Saying working assumption on second half is a ploy to put labour off the scent.

They U-turn all the time, and will try and catch Labour off guard.
I want tories out so will vote labour (given first past the post system) but if we had proportional representation I'd be voting green - they're pushing to rejoin the EU 😎

BIossomtoes · 05/01/2024 09:26

I think you’re safe with 24 May, it’s a Friday. Might be the day before though, although my money’s on the 2nd, same day as the locals.

Good morning all. Thanks for the new thread. I am so grateful for this thread and the excellent contributions. I'm sorry I can't add to this as much as I would like.

Just to say that Sunak is on Laura Kuenssberg this Sunday and she is asking for questions from viewers.
So get those tricky questions in. I have already sent mine in. 😀

Cheguevarahamster · 05/01/2024 10:05

Email is [email protected].

Happy belated election year everyone!

Notonthestairs · 05/01/2024 10:05

I bloody love a wedding. Lets hope if you have had to resort to matchsticks Cats that it is worth it (the election, not the wedding!)

Whilst it is true the Conservatvies are manoeuvring for a May election I think they will bottle it and hold on to the bitter end.

IClaudine · 05/01/2024 10:06

Very proud of the thread title!

Interesting point about Sunak using the term "working assumption".

IIdentifyAsInnocent · 05/01/2024 10:09

Hello, can I join you?

I think it will be the last Thursday before the clocks go back in October. He's not going to go any earlier... Think of all the ways he and his mates can rip the arse out of the system before he goes. He's not going to give up the goose that lays the golden eggs before he has too!

I'll grit my teeth and vote Labour just to get these chances out.

So you should be, it’s a belter. I don’t believe a word Sunak says, if he says it’s unlikely to be May I reckon it’s pretty much guaranteed.

I still think it will be May. It will be interesting to see how Rwanda plays out.

I am also curious as to what is happening with all the Tory MPs who were told to delay stepping down (to avoid the stench of death). The timings of those may indicate the actual date.

EffieeBriest · 05/01/2024 10:18

@IIdentifyAsInnocent why will you grit your teeth if you vote labour ?

There was some reporting he'd been advised not to go for Autumn because of the security risk of having US and UK both distracted by elections/change of government

https://onesub.io/story/dxixhwj8z7lrukzu/0ivduwvc28mzmw3t

It's partly why I think he might hang in til next year (and partly because the Tories are shameless in their grasp on power.)

UK officials warn of security risks in holding general election during US election
