According to electoral calcus, they are predicting a comfortable Labour win..

from Lewis Goodall

Tory majority in Kingswood of over 11,000 but Labour will be very hopeful. Kingswood was a seat which went Tory in 2010 which showed Cameron was in his way to No 10.

BIossomtoes · 05/01/2024 17:52

May’s looking more likely all the time, what with this and Sunak being booed in one day. He must be tearing his hair out.

I hate this is being used as a wedge issue by the right wing.

It’s been a gift for them, and will continue to be politicised on both sides.

It is possible he is unaware he is the PM?

I assumed he’d forgotten.

They don't have a "TWAW" policy - that's scaremongering by Tories and right wing feminists.
https://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/keir-starmer-labour-woman-anneliese-dodds-b2382675.html

I think Starmers position is that people with a GRC must be treated as their acquired gender - that's the law, so he's right.

Actually if you read into it the Labour and Conservative positions are very close.

"It is also clear that we need to improve the process and experience that transgender people have when applying for a Gender Recognition Certificate – making it kinder and more straightforward. Our changes will address the main concerns that trans people themselves tell us they have about it." - Liz Truss, 2020
https://questions-statements.parliament.uk/written-statements/detail/2020-09-22/hcws462

“We want transgender people to be free to live and to prosper in modern Britain.
“Those that responded to the Gender Recognition Act consultation asked for a simplified and centralised process, which is why I am delighted to launch this improved service today."
“This government will continue to prioritise initiatives that can improve the lives of LGBT people across the country.”

Kemi Badenoch 2022 https://www.gov.uk/government/news/gender-recognition-application-modernised

They have changed their position since then though. All the Tory links above are pre 2023, things have changed in the time since then. Labour have vilified Rosie Duffield for her views.

As far as I can see it’s only being politicised by one side. I’m sick and tired of every thread with a whiff of politics about it being taken over and railroaded by this issue. There’s massive child poverty, a health service on its knees, rapists walking free and it’s all about 0.05% of the population and its alleged impact on obsessed women. Even if I hadn’t been a Labour voter before this I certainly would be now. A plague on them.

I'm sick of 0.05% of the population impacting on 51% of the population too, but Labour don't seem to feel the same and that makes me hesitate before voting for them, despite voting for them for over 25 years. Lots of others feel the same.

We need a change from Tory, but Labour have made it very difficult for lots of women to vote for them, yes the Tories are using this against them, but that doesn't mean it doesn't matter.

countrygirl99 · 05/01/2024 18:37

Every time someone posts May is looking likely I have to stop and remind myself they aren't talking about the next Tory leader 😆.

countrygirl99 · 05/01/2024 18:40

@IIdentifyAsInnocent because the Tories have been brilliant for rape prosecutions haven't they. And social care. And health care. All issues that have a massively disproportionate impact on women. And all IMO more important.

DuncinToffee · 05/01/2024 18:42

I am watching the flooding on the news and it is just incredible that Sunak ditched the green policies.

Presumably those women won’t be voting at all then. Because as far as I can see there isn’t any party with a good track record on women and issues that affect women. Anyone holding their nose and voting Labour would be holding their nose voting for any other party.

I wonder how much of that will have an impact on voting in those areas that are prone to flooding.

I wish I thought it would have some impact but the vast majority of people won’t join the dots. A main road in our little Tory town is currently impassable, they won’t remember by the time they go to the polling station.

The challenge with the position you have adopted is even if it is true, one can't ignore that the current government is in it for less thatn 0.05% of the population and that impacts the other 99.95%.

IIdentifyAsInnocent · 05/01/2024 18:58

You are all ignoring the fact I said I'm going to vote for them and not Tories. Clearly I agree Tories are shite, but women's rights are an important issue to me and I am allowed to not like having to vote Labour too!

borntobequiet · 05/01/2024 19:01

I’m sick and tired of every thread with a whiff of politics about it being taken over and railroaded by this issue.

It’s a political issue. What do you expect?

I haven’t posted on these threads for months, partly because of the persistent jibing at those who think it’s important. I responded today to a remark that I felt mischaracterised people who feel as I do. I don’t think it’s the most important issue in politics at the moment - not by a long way.

But essentially, you can’t put in place means of supporting and safeguarding women and girls unless you are clear about what a woman or a girl actually is. And any political party in thrall to ideology of whatever nature is compromised. What irrational belief system will they embrace next?

I have never voted Conservative; I have voted in the past for both Labour and the LDs. I might vote Labour come the election. But I’ll stay off these threads for good now.

DuncinToffee · 05/01/2024 19:07

Oh come on, it is absolutely fine to criticise and disagree with Labour policies, don't let the trans issues divide us.

We all want to protect women's rights.

More reason to push for a PR system.

Same here! It causes havoc with my little brain!

Cornettoninja · 05/01/2024 19:23

As far as I can see, realistically, if a person is opting out of voting in a GE for one of the main three in favour of an independent or none at all then, whilst it’s perfectly justifiable on a local and personal level, it is still opting out of using their vote to effect any kind of meaningful change (or maintaining a status quo) on a national societal level. This includes those whose votes boil down to a specific issue that none of the three main parties cover.

On that basis there’s not really much to add to a conversation about a general election, specifically the most imminent one, when lines have already been drawn in the sand.

BIossomtoes · 05/01/2024 19:36

Who knows? Can anyone remember how big the Tory majority is now? They’re losing seats so fast I can’t keep track.
