Oh my god, what do I do.....wallet opened by sibling hoke for Christmas - money card stolen

I have a sibling home for Christmas.

Who went out to see his friends and he got drunk. I don't know what time of the night he came home at. He is still not gone to bed.

That's not the problem. I had my wallet on the kitchen table. I didn't anticate him to steal from it. I woke this morning to find the wallet open. My bank card gone. I had some small amount of cash in it too but not a lot. It was about 60 euro. I could write off the cash notes. The card - no way.

I asked him if he saw my card but he said no and he's still too drunk.

I encouraged him to go to bed.

It might be a case where I will have to wait for him to sober up. And ask again. Wait til he leaves his room and check his pockets maybe.

I had my card just yesterday. I didn't leave my home all weekend because I was sick. I did online shopping. I had my wallet in my lap. I was in the sitting room. I put the card back into my wallet.

Card from wallet gone now.

It's Monday and a week before Christmas.

Do I wait for him to sober up and search for the card later on tonight?

Or do I get onto the bank.

I have a spare account and card with revolut.
Will I top up my account with an estimate of what I need this week and contact my bank in the hope of getting a new card.

It's very fucking mindless. Getting drunk and stealing from my wallet.

He's not like this when he's sober.

well presumably you have stopped any further purchases on the add by going online and feeezing the card?

OnAir · 18/12/2023 06:31

He's a coke head

PurpleBottle · 18/12/2023 06:32

My mother has no boundaries and she likes to care for him as if he's a baby. What I could do is wait a few hours and send her into his room to check to see if she's asleep and take his jacket from the room. He won't know or remember where he left. He's too drunk. Then look in his pockets.

I needed my card. It's so fucking mindless.

My wallet was on the kitchen table last night. I woke this morning to find cigarette butts on the floors and then my receipts that were in the wallet strewn all over the floor and my bank card gone.

Freeze the card immediately and call the fraud team

Cyclistmumgrandma · 18/12/2023 06:32

Freeze the card immediately then talk to him when he sobers up.

ChateauDuMont · 18/12/2023 06:32

Start going through his things immediately.

Did he bring anyone else back to the house?

Did he pay for a cab home and had to come inside and get money and go back out and pay the driver and in his drunkenness used your wallet?

Have you checked outside your house on your drive etc in case he dropped it?

But yes if there is just the two of you in the house you can start looking for it.

Meceme · 18/12/2023 06:32

Get on to the bank. If he's that drunk, he may have lost it or left it in a bar. Get your bank to stop the card and check transactions. If it hasn't been used no harm done but if it has at least it stops further use.

He didn't use the card. I checked my app.

He didn't use the card. I checked my app.

That's great. Now freeze the card until its found. With most banks you can unfreeze later.

VioletPickles · 18/12/2023 06:35

Freeze it, then go look. He’s probably passed out.

He didn't have it yesterday. My wallet was intact last night before I went to bed. This all happened over night. I got up at 2 am and he was home and my wallet was on the table and I didn't notice anything suspicious then.

I'd be checking his pockets and not waiting til he's asleep to do it. If he's stolen your bank card he can't exactly complain can he?

He's not passed out yet unfortunately. He's gone to bed now but I doubt he's in any deep sleep.

Freeze the card straight away, you can probs do it from the app. If you find it then you can unfreeze it.

NatWestPigFamily · 18/12/2023 06:38

I would also check his pockets now. He may still have everything if he is really drunk and hasn’t been out again.

VisionsOfSplendour · 18/12/2023 06:40

Why can't you go and ask him if he knows where it is? If he's so drunk he won't register that you're looking for it when he can't answer

PurpleBottle · 18/12/2023 06:42

I had to look for some important receipts that were in my wallet. Like the turkey booking slip I got and a tracking numbers from the post a few weeks ago.

While I was searching throughy wallet other cards came through, through the slips and there was my card. Sitting in between other cards and receipts. Definitely not in the place where it is.

He had a mighty good rummage around.

Good god.

I'd be thinking this too, are u sure he's not used it to pay for some?

Chilicabbage · 18/12/2023 06:43

It's not just the mother who doesn't have boundaries considering you would just write off the stole notes and are tiptoeing around this situation🤷

PurpleBottle · 18/12/2023 06:43

Definitely wasn't in the place where its usually stored in my wallet.

It doesn’t matter where it is, what matters is that you don’t have it. Freeze it now. Deal with the accusations and recriminations later.

shearwater2 · 18/12/2023 06:46

I froze my card with Starling when I couldn't find it. Found it not long after and unfroze. Had to delete and re-add it as a payment method to Amazon, Paypal and Google Wallet as it still didn't work after unfreezing.

So it's a great idea but it turned out to be a bit more of a pain in the arse than I expected.

It's disappointing theres some cash gone but fuck it, it's just a small amount. He spent a fortune to come home at Christmas time and it's good to see him home when he's sober. I didn't anticate him to be like this and for a night like this. I should have known though. He made up with some old friends. One of them is a pure dirty alco. He's functioning and he works but outside of working and sleeping he's usually in pubs.

So you've found it?

Let that be a lesson, don't trust your dysfunctional family
