If you were going to be a grandmother, what would you call yourself?

Just as the title says - if one of your children was having a baby, what would you want to be known as?

The only options I can come up with are:

Gran
Granny
Grandma
Nan
Nana
Nanny

Which would you choose, or would you choose something else?

I became a first time grand mother 3 months ago to a beautiful baby girl. I'll be called nanny or Nana.

LoreleiG · 15/12/2023 13:02

I would be called Nana because Gran and Grandma are my grandmothers names!

Rocknrollstar · 15/12/2023 13:03

I am called Bubba, as were my mother and grandparents. It’s an old Yiddish term but much preferable in my mind. Families will often add the person’s first name as well to differentiate them. When I had children my friends also called my mother Bubba!

CurlewKate · 15/12/2023 13:03

Grandma, like my mil. Or first name like my mum. But- and I can't stress this enough-it's up to the grandmother in question.

MILTOBE · 15/12/2023 13:12

No, I know it's up to the grandmother in question - that's me! All of the above seem so old!

My mum is Nan because she felt variations on Grandmother were too ageing. She was 73 when she became one 😂

ThreeRingCircus · 15/12/2023 13:15

I would want to be Gran or Granny. Grandma sounds too formal and I can't bear Nanny.

ringoutsolsticebells · 15/12/2023 13:15

Im called mimmim

herbyham · 15/12/2023 13:16

My mum chose Amma, which to be fair none of the rest suit her in the slightest so it's a good one.
Easy for the kids to say too, I think my MIL has settled on nanny but honestly I'm not sure it changes so often

ExcellentFabulous · 15/12/2023 13:17

Good old Grandma/Grandmum/Granny but most importantly, whatever my grandchild(ren) likes to call me. After all, it's their name for me and not what I prefer.

IncompleteSenten · 15/12/2023 13:17

Grandma or Cucu (pron sho-sho)

caringcarer · 15/12/2023 13:18

Nanny followed by my Christian name.

Tryingtokeepgoing · 15/12/2023 13:19

As children we had Granny/Grandpa and Grandma/Grandad, with their parents being prefixed with ‘Great’, so either Granny or Grandma. Unreasonable and irrational I know, so don’t shoot me down, but Nanny always reminds me of a goat, and Nan / Nana seem common.

ZombiePara · 15/12/2023 13:20

One of my old colleagues chose the term "Granma" to specifically be different, and likes to emphasise that there's no "d" in it as well.

Personally, I like Nana, but I haven't even got kids so 😂

DoneByWeds · 15/12/2023 13:26

My mum started out as Granny but my niece struggled to pronounce it and called her Danny. That stuck and now she is Granny Danny to her teenage grandkids.

My MIL opted for Nana. Hard to get cards with that on.

My Italian aunt is Nonna. It really suits her!

Nanny followed by my Christian name.

But doesn’t that make you sound like an extra from a Disney movie rather than an actual member of the family?

HomburgandTrilby · 15/12/2023 13:29

Anything but ‘Nana’, ‘Nan’ or ‘Nanny’.

I wouldn’t wear yourself to a frazzle over it, OP. In my experience, small children decide for themselves after a certain point, regardless of what they’ve been ‘taught’ — my parents and PILS had a discussion about it, but by the time DS was about 2.5 he was calling them all by their first names!

flapjackfairy · 15/12/2023 13:30

I am straightforward Gran. other grandmother is Nanny

PaulaPocket · 15/12/2023 13:30

I'm going to be called Grandmama, if it ever happens.

UsingChangeofName · 15/12/2023 13:31

It depends on if there are already living people in your family that go by one of those names - I'd choose a different one, so you don't get all the "which Grandma?" confusion.

Also, what the other Grandma was going to be called (for same reason).

SO, in my case, Granny.

When I was little I had Balham Nanny and Derby Nanny. We went to see them both by train.

if it was me I quite like granny .

LifeExperience · 15/12/2023 13:32

I'm Grandma.

Hoolahoophop · 15/12/2023 13:32

I'd want to be a Nanny then a Granny when I'm a great Grandmother. Here's hoping it happens!
