If you were going to be a grandmother, what would you call yourself?

Just as the title says - if one of your children was having a baby, what would you want to be known as?

The only options I can come up with are:

Gran
Granny
Grandma
Nan
Nana
Nanny

Which would you choose, or would you choose something else?

I am Nanny which has sort of just happened naturally. Not my first choice, makes me feel like an old goat! Nanny at 41

Pickles2023 · 15/12/2023 15:46

Grandmother...ill be old and wise (i hope) so going with the grand and embracing it.

Nanasueathome · 15/12/2023 15:48

My user name gives me away

Redburnett · 15/12/2023 15:50

I might choose the Welsh Nain (pronounced Nine). Our origins are Welsh although none of us are Welsh speakers, but Nain sounds nicely quirky.
The down side is that almost no-one in England would understand who was meant if a child referred to their 'Nain'.
But frankly i would be so happy to have grandchildren i would let their parents decide.

Wolfpa · 15/12/2023 15:51

It always surprises me how many people want to be named after a goat (nanny) or from a child learning to say banana (nana), I think Grandma is the best option.

FreshWinterMorning · 15/12/2023 15:52

Nan

Nana

Nanny

Any of the above. Would prefer Nana.

Not Granny or Grandma or Gran. BLEURRGH! I will not answer to them. I would like to be called Nana-firstname...

(So for example... Nana-Kelly/Nana-Linda/Nana-Helen...)

starlightcan · 15/12/2023 15:52

Grandma 🙂

It always surprises me that some people cannot fathom that others don't think the same as them - and 'Nana' is pronounced 'NANNA' not NARNA as in banana. 🙄

Hell will freeze over before I will be called GRANNY or GRANDMA. But if someone else prefers that, then good for them, I'm not going to clutch my pearls and say 'how can you POSSIBLY want to be called that?!' Wink

Sourisblanche · 15/12/2023 15:55

I think Granny but my dc use Oma for their grandparents and when I suggested I didn’t fancy being an Oma, they looked at me in disbelief!

Irish here so it will be (hopefully) Mammó.

Oooo I love this! I'm definitely going to use this!

Cynderella · 15/12/2023 15:57

I'm called by my first name because, well that's my name. I have never wanted to be known as nanna, nanny, granny or heaven forbid grandma.

Sharontheodopolodous · 15/12/2023 16:01

I'm going to be a grandma next year

I'll be granny-after my mil (who is the best granny ever-shes everything i want to be as a grandparent)

My own mother is nanna and I'm nc with her after years of her abuse

My son asked 'why granny?' and I explained

Much to his amusement-hes going to enjoy calling me 'granny'

I think the other grandmother is going to be nanna (not sure)

DemBonesDemBones · 15/12/2023 16:03

Grannie.

1983Louise · 15/12/2023 16:07

I thought I'd be Grandma but my granddaughter calls me Mamar which I really like. My daughter called my Mum, Bambar, she couldn't say Grandma at first 🙂

Clawdy · 15/12/2023 16:16

My mum's name was Nancy, always known as Nan, so it was obvious that my kids would call her Nana!

Almondmum · 15/12/2023 16:16

Nain for me like a previous poster.

hiredandsqueak · 15/12/2023 16:18

Well I thought I'd be Granny but dgs called me Gangan and it's stuck now so I am Gangan.

Waitingfordoggo · 15/12/2023 16:19

I’d be Grandma I reckon. I don’t see myself as Nanny/Nana as those aren’t terms I’ve ever really used. I only met one of mine and she was called Grandma.

My Mum was going to be Grandma but my DD couldn’t say it so she became ‘Mormor’. We didn’t know it at the time but Mormor is common in some Scandinavian countries (mother’s mother, I think).

Dinnertimewoop · 15/12/2023 16:22

I had two grans, differentiated by their surnames. If I become a gran, I won't be able to be Gran X though as I have a really long surname. My two grans had one syllable surnames so was pretty easy, think Gran Jones and Gran White

Notthatcatagain · 15/12/2023 16:24

I chose Nana on the basis that it's the easiest to say if you are learning to talk. I wanted to be first. My DH is Pops and it suits him down to the ground

twistandscream · 15/12/2023 16:24

I'm granny to two but the new baby will probably call me babusya. It translates as old woman ... fair I guess , and I do like it .

LBFseBrom · 15/12/2023 16:44

Grandma or Granny unless my grandchild came up with a nickname (which would be nice).

Illpickthatup · 15/12/2023 16:54

Sometimes you don't get the choice. When my parents first grandchild was born they called themselves Gran and Granda. My little nephew had other ideas and calls them Gangan and Grampa.

I've heard the term Glam-ma. If you're a particularly glamorous granny!

JenniferJupiterVenusandMars · 15/12/2023 16:57

I’m very happy to be Nonna, my lovely DDIL is Italian, otherwise I honestly didn’t mind.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 15/12/2023 17:03

Granny. My maternal grandmother was granny, as is my DM to my children.
