If you were going to be a grandmother, what would you call yourself?

Just as the title says - if one of your children was having a baby, what would you want to be known as?

The only options I can come up with are:

Gran
Granny
Grandma
Nan
Nana
Nanny

Which would you choose, or would you choose something else?

Well my mum is granny and very very old. I prefer that to Nanny or any of those variations though. The other grandmother isn't an issue as she's from another country and has her own version.

I'm going to be called Grandmama, if it ever happens.

That sounds very authoritative! I can imagine the children being summoned to Grandmama, all tidy and scrubbed clean.

Very happy Granny here, and I was only mid 40's when I became one.

Powerplant · 15/12/2023 13:35

I will be a first time grand mother next year and I’ve really no preference so will see what happens naturally. However, with my step child’s little one I am referred to by first name.

ActDottie · 15/12/2023 13:36

Pregnant with first child and my parents found it really hard to decide! In the end they’ve gone for Nanny and Grampy.

Gran and Grandad were out because they were my dad’s parents.

Nana and Granpa also put as they were my mum’s parents. My Nana is still here as well so would be confusing.

A jokey one they put forward was Mumster and Dumpster!! Which I was worried was going to stick for a while!!!

Unicorn34 · 15/12/2023 13:36

I get called nanny, but that wasn't choice-based, just what the first name was they said. My Husband is gaga (not literally... much!) and that has stuck for both grandchildren. I'm sure I will be nan soon when the oldest finds out he sounds babyish! Not sure what gaga will become .... garg? Lol

Congratulations on becoming a grandparent - the love is like no other xx

ProfessorInkling · 15/12/2023 13:36

I think I like Nana. Everything else feels a bit old, but by then I probably will be...

I'd just go with Granny then if you like it. or Granny MILTOBE.

Marblessolveeverything · 15/12/2023 13:37

Irish here so it will be (hopefully) Mammó.

Member278307 · 15/12/2023 13:39

Gran gran short and sweet x

Restingbitchface01 · 15/12/2023 13:41

I'm Granny. Occasionally demoted to Gran because she's 9 now. I'm not ready for this. Where did the little girl go!?

shieldmaiden7 · 15/12/2023 13:42

My kids call me mama-J (they don't have a step mum, I'm their only mum, just a nickname that came about when they were young) and said when they have kids they will call me nana-J. I'm happy with that!

Vicliz24 · 15/12/2023 13:42

I'm Gramma , I decided years ago to be Gramma and I love it . My DH is Grampsy .

Creampies · 15/12/2023 13:44

Grandma, because I’m neither a goat or a paid employee.

ImthatBoleyngirl · 15/12/2023 13:44

I love what Sheldon from the Big Bang Theory calls his Grandma ...... Meemaw! It's so cute!

beachcomber70 · 15/12/2023 13:50

I'm Nanny [Christian name] to one set of GK's
and Granma [no d] to the other set.

My own Grandmother was Granma to me, so I opted for it in memory to her.

MirandaWest · 15/12/2023 13:51

I will be Granny when the time comes.

Rockschooldropout · 15/12/2023 13:52

I became a first time grandparent a year ago - I’m Welsh so I am Nain (Welsh for grandma )

Grumpynan · 15/12/2023 13:54

Im nanny stick. Because I use a walking stick. I didn’t want grandma because that’s was my MIL and I was not going to be her !, so I said nana or nanny,

FatherJackHackettsUnderpantsHamper · 15/12/2023 14:03

That makes me think of Black Books, where they were Moo-ma & Poo-pa - although iirc they were actually Manny's parents, rather than his grandparents!

WenttheDayWell · 15/12/2023 14:03

I am hoping I get called Aamaa, my DS is mixed Chinese and white, his GF who I am hoping will become his wife because she is lovely is white so not sure how she will feel, so we will have to see how that goes.

Honestly as long as they are ok with me buying toddlers animal onesies I’m ok with anything. First on the list is Panda, followed by fox.

Thelazygardener · 15/12/2023 14:06

I have no advice but sat smiling reading this thread….i had my first baby 5 months ago and honestly had no idea of the significance of the grandmothers’ titles…..that was until both grandmothers wanted to adopt the standalone title of ‘Nanny’….so far neither have yielded so i think it’s going to be Nanny ‘first name’…..maybe they can duel over it on Christmas Day?

SwordToFlamethrower · 15/12/2023 14:07

Nanny probably, like Nanny Og

longlostauthor · 15/12/2023 14:08

Cringing at the memory of my MIL making the biggest fuss of this when we had our first child. Sorry, her first grandchild. She wanted to be Glamma because all her friends told her she was too glamorous to be a grandparent, apparently (wtf that means I don’t really know). She ended up being Granny. I will be happy to be called anything other than that now.

ImCamembertTheBigCheese · 15/12/2023 14:10

Mamgu (Welsh heritage)
