If you were going to be a grandmother, what would you call yourself?

Just as the title says - if one of your children was having a baby, what would you want to be known as?

The only options I can come up with are:

Gran
Granny
Grandma
Nan
Nana
Nanny

Which would you choose, or would you choose something else?

Depends if it’s my son or daughter’s kids

We have different names for grandmother depending on whether the grandmother is the mum’s mum or the dad’s mum. It’s also a different generic title for male and female grandchildren also depending on whether they’re male or female and also whether they’re the sons or daughters kids

I chose Granny but my grandaughter couldn’t say it and came up with her own name for me which I love and will encourage her to keep using.

That actually is interesting!

Granny

Cream pies you sound so superior. It's a shame while you learnt the meaning of Nanny to be goat and childcarer you didn't learn it could also mean grandmother. Lots of words have two or three meanings, a bit embarrassing for you not to realise. Do you get confused by : bark, novel, season, crane, harbour and racket in everyday life? FYI Nanny is a perfectly understood term for a female grandparent. Pointing out the word has other meanings is a bit embarrassing for you, everyone else knows that too.

Lelliekellie · 18/12/2023 22:13

Gran, Nan, & Nanna are prob younger sounding (in my opinion).

personally I have an Ouma and I’ve always thought that was cool (im 35 now)

edited for spelling

Highlandcows · 19/12/2023 11:33

probably nanny, but my daughters called my mum ‘Taya’ because that’s how my eldest first pronounced it as a baby and it stuck.

my mum loved it, and even now my children are older and my mum has been gone a few years, it’s still what we refer to her as.

id happily be a yaya too if my children encouraged their children to one day use the same name.

Soozy58 · 19/12/2023 16:48

I’m an Oma because of my German heritage. Easy for babies to say!

Anisette · 19/12/2023 17:41

Granny, though in practice it's become Ganny since grandchild began to talk.

I never really understand why people opt for Nanny, to me that's a paid carer of small children.

IreneGoodnight · 19/12/2023 17:55

Agree with the nanny/goat association🐐 🤣

crosstalk · 19/12/2023 18:26

First name for me, please.

I think a previous poster was referring to farmor and morma as Scandinavian ways of distinguishing between paternal and maternal gps?

BluesBird19764 · 19/12/2023 20:08

My son referred to my mum as Grandyma or just Grandy. My MIL was Nay-Nay when he was small.

Ilovesmesomefriedchicken · 19/12/2023 22:21

I dread having grandkids. I will refuse to be called any of these things

Hedjwitch · 20/12/2023 20:28

Adult dcs refer to their grandmother as " the G- meister"

You could always just ask them to call you by your full name, when they arrive (and can talk) - like Alan Sugar, when he gave his wife a Christmas card that was signed "from Alan Sugar" inside!

MrsHughesPinny · 21/12/2023 04:36

I’d be Granny. There’s something lovely and nostalgic sounding about it. I have Nans but I don’t really like that. Hopefully not any time soon though, if you please!
