If you were going to be a grandmother, what would you call yourself?

Just as the title says - if one of your children was having a baby, what would you want to be known as?

The only options I can come up with are:

Gran
Granny
Grandma
Nan
Nana
Nanny

Which would you choose, or would you choose something else?

I dread having grandkids. I will refuse to be called any of these things

Why?

My mum was always very vain. She didn’t want to be called granny/grandma because she felt it made her sound old. She settled for Nanny in the end.

Which we all felt made her sound like paid staff. Don’t be that (vain) person.

Granny

I think I am going to call myself "G" thanks to this thread :)

I love being Granny. Sometimes Grammy depending on his mood.

Granny or Grandma - or a nickname if it was nice, I know a grandfather who is known as 'Nandad' which I think is sweet.

LadySlipper · 31/05/2024 18:03

Grannie for me and Nanny for her other grandmother.

Love this!!

I'm soon to be a great aunt and have asked that my name be Grant 🤣 hadn't thought about grandma names though. I quite like GG, or something totally random. Also just realised that Welsh for Nana is Nain (I grew up in Wales), which is also No in German (my children are half German). So that could cause confusion!

I called mine nanny and then Nan when I was older and I called my great grandmother granny. I think I'd like to be called granny I think it's so cute! They were all such lovely women I miss them. Grandmothers are so important

I clicked on this thread wanting to join in and then realised I'd started it!

(Did anyone see that thread where a woman asked about a particular buggy for her baby and then answered her own question? They were the first two posts of the thread, several months (I think) apart.)

It's imminent and I'm going for granny! Although the baby does have a determined little chin in her scan photos so she might well go for something else!

@MILTOBE I clicked on this thread to add what I wanted to be called when I became a grandmother (if it happens!) and I noticed someone else had the same idea. I was just about to write what a coincidence that was when I realised it was me. It also took me back to the buggy thread where someone replied to their own question.

Wishing you all the best for when your grandchild arrives!

FlippetyFlop77 · 04/06/2024 13:31

I'm 49 and Nanny (they are 4 and 1 so will probably become Nan as they get older as Nanny is usually for younger ones imo)

WellWellSaidTheRockingChair · 04/06/2024 18:27

Granny I think, husband Grampa

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 04/06/2024 18:30

I’m Granny. I don’t like Grandma - it sounds even older, and fat.
