If you were going to be a grandmother, what would you call yourself?

Just as the title says - if one of your children was having a baby, what would you want to be known as?

The only options I can come up with are:

Gran
Granny
Grandma
Nan
Nana
Nanny

Which would you choose, or would you choose something else?

Nana.

bakewellbride · 15/12/2023 17:04

MIL is mammar Smile

Neighbours and acquaintances here in Italy already call me “Mrs. Firstname” as a sign of respect so I wouldn’t be surprised if I became “Grandma Firstname”.
I think it’s a nice modern version, not too formal and not too familiar.
Maybe a touch of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory “Grandma Josephine”…

atthecoreofallyoudo · 15/12/2023 17:07

Assuming my grandchildren didn't come up with anything themselves, then Granny.

Never, ever, Nan/Nanna.

My grandmothers were Granny (firstname) and Granny (firstname).

QueenOfHiraeth · 15/12/2023 17:10

I like Nana as, to me Granny, Grandma, etc, sounds very old
There's a trend round here to want Glam-ma or GiGi (short for glamorous granny) which I don't like as I think they sound pretentious

NeverDropYourMooncup · 15/12/2023 17:15

DD has threatened either Grandmama or Dodo. She still calls me Mumma (or Jesuschristmother, depending upon whether she wants something or just to tell me off).

I'd be happy with either as it would mean a lovely, squishy grandchild. Tbh, Oidick-ed would be worth it if there was one of those to gain from it.

I am "shima sani" - can't do the right inflection marks on my tablet. But they contract it too "shimi".

pilates · 15/12/2023 17:17

Gran/Granny

tokesqueen · 15/12/2023 17:19

Grandma. Certainly not Nana or Nanny.
Anything else sounds too 'old'

SingingSands · 15/12/2023 17:23

Taking inspiration from the Katie Morag books, I'm hoping to be Granny Island by the time I become a grandmother (if it happens!).

TinaYouFatLard · 15/12/2023 17:24

I hope to one day be Nanny like my DM, MIL and our Nans before then - none of whom are goats or paid employees.

willowstar · 15/12/2023 17:29

@ImthatBoleyngirl my mum randomly wanted to be called meemaw when I had my children. Maybe she got it from big bang theory? I vetoed it as it felt really odd. Maybe I shouldn't have done that, but she became granny. I had two fabulous grannies growing up and I think it is an awesome status, so I just couldn't get my head around meemaw at all. My granny was still alive, so she became great granny. If my children ever have children I would be really happy to be their granny.

Blogswife · 15/12/2023 17:33

I’m Grandma to my baby GD (for now) as soon as she can talk I’ll be proud to be whatever she wants to call me !

I would want to be Gran or Granny. Grandma sounds too formal and I can't bear Nanny.

^ this I wouldn't want to be called nanny.
Makes me think of goats.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 15/12/2023 21:11

I’m Granny. I don’t like grandma - to me it sounds old and fat - and I don’t like Nan, Nana or Nanny, either.

FutureMandosWife · 15/12/2023 21:53

We have cat Granny (she has a cat) tunnel Granny and Grandpa (go through a tunnel to get to them).

RandomID · 15/12/2023 21:58

I doubt I will ever be presented with grandchildren, but should it happen I will style myself as The Grand High Matriarch. It will amuse the ever loving fuck out of me, and my children - they more often than not refer to me as mother (started as a joke, and they giggled so much they kept using it, and now it’s about half and half mother:mum!) and their siblings as brother/sister. We’re and odd bunch of goblins really.

FlatWhiteExtraHot · 16/12/2023 08:27

It would be nice if people stopped sneering at what other people choose to go by. Funnily enough my children have never once confused their Nanny with a goat or thought she was a paid employee.

When my children were born they had a full complement of great grandmothers who went by Granny, Grandma, Nanna and Nanna-surname. My MIL wanted to be called Grandma and my mum said she’d put up with Nan but would prefer her first name. My oldest decided she was Nanny and that was that, she’s been Nanny ever since and loves it.

flapjackfairy · 16/12/2023 08:37

i went for straightforward Gran as I had a lovely Gran as a child and I miss her still. I am trying to be like her as a grandparent. My mum and others have said Gran is old fashioned and dated but personally I like the simplicity of being Gran and Grandad . It makes sense to me .

WellWellSaidTheRockingChair · 16/12/2023 08:39

Granny

Not pretentious, they just sound desperate! Calling yourself ‘Glam-ma’ screams ‘I’m struggling with ageing’.

WandaWonder · 16/12/2023 08:43

The child/ren decide in my family

Elvanseshortage · 16/12/2023 08:52

If it happens 🙏🏼🙏🏼 then, Oma

ShowOfHands · 16/12/2023 09:57

My children have Grandmas (multiple) and a Mamgu.

I'll be a Grandma if I'm lucky enough.

TinaYouFatLard · 16/12/2023 10:16

MN is always very snooty about Nanny/Nan. It’s okay to sneer at the working class on here (note previous reference to Estuary English - simply ghastly!)
