Is it me or are Next and Tesco just ruling the clothes market these days?

Just been in my local Next and Tesco, Christmas outfits literally everywhere. Sooooo many choices of Xmas jumpers, like 20 different styles, just got woken. This never used to be the case.

Seeing as most smaller clothing jobs have either closed or been acquired by one of the giants and put online, is it me or are Tesco and Next (maybe George and Tu as well), just benefitting massively out of footfall in their shops?

I have never bought clothes in Tesco.
I haven't bought clothes in Next since the 1990s, when their quality dropped off a cliff.

So possibly it's just you, OP?

Silverbirch7 · 28/11/2023 16:10

It's you.

Geneve82 · 28/11/2023 16:10

no. not remotely.

in fact i don’t think i own a single item from either and wouldn’t ever be drawn to even consider either

Geneve82 · 28/11/2023 16:11

what does having a load of christmas jumpers have to do with your question? (aside from confirming to me that i’m not right to not even consider either when buying clothes)

LoreleiG · 28/11/2023 16:12

I don’t shop in either for clothes but now wondering if I should!

thenightsky · 28/11/2023 16:13

I've had some good stuff from Tesco, but not for years. I won't buy from them now they've closed the changing rooms and on-line too. Not traipsing 16 miles home to try stuff on, then 16 miles back to return it all. Fuck em.

hennybeans · 28/11/2023 16:16

I buy a lot from Tu, but not a single thing from Tesco ( not near me and no fitting rooms apparently) or Next ( just don’t like their clothes as quality is bad for the price).

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 28/11/2023 16:19

Next is crap. Horrible tacky crap.

Tesco don’t have online so l don’t even look at their stuff.

Gowlett · 28/11/2023 16:21

I guess if they are your only local shops, then that’s the choice. Apart from online shopping or visiting a nearby city.

skippy67 · 28/11/2023 16:23

It's you.

A few years ago when my DC was a toddler, I got them quite a few bits from Tesco and used to be fab quality. I think their quality has slipped now but their prices on kids clothes are absolutely scandalous for being a supermarket. A few years ago I found M&S and Next expensive for young children's clothes yet I'm now more likely to go there!

readingmakesmehappy · 28/11/2023 16:25

I used to get stuff from Tesco when you could order online and collect in the Express stores. Now you can only buy in their big stores it would never occur to me to go out of my way to look for it. Occasionally pop into Next for kids stuff but never see anything for me there.

astarsheis · 28/11/2023 16:25

Like a previous poster, I've never bought clothes in Tesco nor other supermarkets and haven't shopped in Next for about 30 years.

Maybe just you 😁

Scruffington · 28/11/2023 16:28

The last two tops I bought from Next stretched massively when I wore them, 3 sizes bigger by the end of the day. And the boots I bought split across the sole after a couple of weeks. So I always avoid Next now.

Not sure if I've ever bought anything from Tesco.

AHeadForHeights · 28/11/2023 16:29

Well, when you're on the bones of your arse and can't afford much on the way of clothes and your kids' trousers are so fucked they're beyond repair since you've sewn them up several times already, cheap clothes in tesco's are better than nothing. They have their place, at the opposite end of the spectrum from the independent sellers who charge a fortune.

pinkyredrose · 28/11/2023 16:29

It's just you.

BIossomtoes · 28/11/2023 16:33

I don’t think it’s just you. Every other person at the Tesco checkout seems to have clothes of some sort in their trolley. My son swears by their jeans and won’t entertain buying them anywhere else.

Scruffington · 28/11/2023 16:34

I've definitely bought clothes from Sainsbury's though. I got some good summer clothes and some decent bras there.

HollowEgg · 28/11/2023 16:34

Nope, I don’t own anything from either. Bought DD a few next things but the quality is shocking.

ThankYoufortheDay · 28/11/2023 16:35

I don’t buy clothes in Tesco and never have. I would occasionally buy dc’s clothes in Asda.

PepperJacksBestHo · 28/11/2023 16:37

I also won't buy clothes in Tesco since they closed the changing rooms. Absolutely ridiculous idea. If I can't try it on, I won't buy it.

Needmorelego · 28/11/2023 16:41

Tu and George at Asda are better than Tesco. Tesco used to be better. It changed from Cherokee (?) to F+F as their "brand". I liked Cherokee better.
I've never liked Next. I mean some of the stuff is fairly nice but no better quality than Primark/Pep and Co yet much more expensive.
I find it daft that Tesco don't have an online presence for clothing.
If I need to buy something I have a look online first before I make a trip. I don't bother to go to Tesco unless I am going for something specific. If I could look at their range online first I might go there more often.

Well this is making me chuckle. I've had loads of stuff of the years.

Kids stuff galore! Decent quality and design. Especially pyjamas and summer stuff.
I'd say it's similar to Peacocks perhaps. I wouldn't call it " bones of yr arse wear" at all.

Teens have the nice flannel pyjamas, swimwear, and socks are good.

This year I've had a swimsuit, denim bucket hat, pyjamas and I'll get DS a christmas jumper in there.

I like it for convenience.

YorkieTheRabbit · 28/11/2023 16:42

Never bought clothes from Tesco, come to think of it, I haven’t even bought food from there in twenty years.
Next, very hit and miss, the last thing I ordered was a dress at the beginning of summer. I sent it back as it was completely see through from the waist down.
