Is it me or are Next and Tesco just ruling the clothes market these days?

Just been in my local Next and Tesco, Christmas outfits literally everywhere. Sooooo many choices of Xmas jumpers, like 20 different styles, just got woken. This never used to be the case.

Seeing as most smaller clothing jobs have either closed or been acquired by one of the giants and put online, is it me or are Tesco and Next (maybe George and Tu as well), just benefitting massively out of footfall in their shops?

Yeah, just you, op...sustaining all the clothing in the supermarkets...good work 👍

sunglassesonthetable · 28/11/2023 16:45

Oh and they used to do a cashmere range. I know!
OH had quite a few of those jumpers.

UseOfWeapons · 28/11/2023 16:45

I don't shop in Next since their garment quality went down, is rubbish now. Their changing room mirrors are also the most unflattering I've ever seen! Tesco, well I bought some slippers there this weekend, but for clothing - no, none of it much cop since they ditched Cherokee, the jeans used to be great for me, now ...

sunglassesonthetable · 28/11/2023 16:46

*I have never bought clothes in Tesco.
I haven't bought clothes in Next since the 1990s, when their quality dropped off a cliff.

So possibly it's just you, OP?*

The logic. 😂👌🏼

PullTheStringsAndAddSomeRings · 28/11/2023 16:49

I’ve not bought an item of clothing from either for years. Genuinely haven’t shopped in Next clothing (or decor tbf) or the wider clothing selection at Tesco for over twenty years (nor online).

Have bought some bra tops from Sainsburys though.

Needmorelego · 28/11/2023 16:49

@UseOfWeapons I had a Cherokee T-shirt that lasted for years. Although admittedly I wore it until it fell apart.
It was blue with a horse on. I loved that T-shirt.

Lochroy · 28/11/2023 16:51

Would love the people saying no, to say where they but their clothes. I find everything else so expensive.

The jeans I had from there lasted years, comfy, fitted well, I lived in them. Unfortunately, I wore the arse out! Once knickers were showing through, they were reluctantly discarded!

I think people have totally confused what I'm saying in my post, although I'm not sure how!

I'm not asking if you buy from these shops, nor am I saying I buy from them...Although I have done, but that's not the point I'm trying to make...

I'm asking if you've also noticed that the range in these shops has multiplied massively in the last few years, and is that a result of the smaller shops closing? Will this continue to happen?

LolaSmiles · 28/11/2023 16:56

I've actually bought less from Tesco and Sainsbury's since they closed their changing rooms. It smacks of relying on people buying without trying, and then not getting round to returning unsuitable items.
I'm not made of money and can't afford to buy multiple items, drive home with DC, try everything on and then drag DC back again to return.

Desecratedcoconut · 28/11/2023 16:57

My local Tesco has the same amount of floor space dedicated to clothing as ever but seems to cycle quicker through lines. Christmas jumpers seem ideally placed, people aren't too worried about the quality, they don't want to spend too much and it's at a very time pressed point in the year.

reread your thread title and OP

still “not sure why” so many have “totally confused” your question?

Needmorelego · 28/11/2023 16:58

@pinkfongg well yes. People like the convenience of buying clothes from supermarkets. "Town Centres" have become run down and neglected. Department stores have gone bust. People want a mix of fairly cheap clothes and convenience.
So it's a one off trip to Primark where you can get everything or getting clothes while doing a food shop.

Geneve82 · 28/11/2023 16:59

You asked whether these two shops are “ruling the market”

many of us posted…. er no

and now you’re saying we’ve misinterpreted you

AngelsWithSilverWings · 28/11/2023 17:00

@Lochroy me too! I really want to know where else to shop for affordable stuff.

I rely on Next for basic every day clothes. Used to buy loads of basics and holiday clothes from TU but the changing room issue makes it a big no no for me now.

StaunchMomma · 28/11/2023 17:01

Yeah, it's just you, I think.

I've bought the odd bits over the years but Tesco are in no way 'ruling' and the Xmas jumpers I saw in there today were grim.

They're not even that cheap, either. I got caught without a coat on a cold day and ran into one to grab a cardi - £30. Hardly pennies.

I ran through Next last week (for the Kids section) and did see a couple of nice bits but, again, ruling?! Hardly.

Needmorelego · 28/11/2023 17:01

@LolaSmiles I know someone who used to work in the clothing department of one of the supermarkets. Unfortunately people used the changing rooms for shop lifting, doing drugs, taking a shit or even having sex.
Yes 🤮🤢🤮
They don't have enough staff to have someone permanently allocated to monitor changing rooms in supermarkets.

thenightsky · 28/11/2023 17:02

I used to love Tu clothing, but not bought any since they shut changing rooms.

Our Sainsbury's changing rooms are back open.

Might be worth a pop in.

Kpo58 · 28/11/2023 17:03

I gave up buying my DD clothes from M&S as all the older girls clothing is either inappropriate for a 7 year old or ridiculously short on the tops.

I buy from anywhere that does a reasonable length on tops.

verdantverdure · 28/11/2023 17:03

A silk shirt and wide leg trousers is one of my default outfits and my friend sent me a picture recently of a satin shirt and wide leg trousers outfit from Tesco to show me I'm "in" this year Grin

I don't think I've bought anything from Next this millennium.

sunglassesonthetable · 28/11/2023 17:04

Yes I was just thinking that I tried a jumper on today in a Sainsbury's changing room.
Maybe they've relented.

Do you run through all clothing shops or just the cheap ones? 😁

cornflakesandtea · 28/11/2023 17:05

Gosh... it's threads like these that make me realise I don't fit on MN.
People saying Next is poor quality and tacky? I can't even afford to shop at Next. All my clothes are from Primark or New Look.

43ontherocksporfavor · 28/11/2023 17:06

Supermarkets had some good clothes but the lack of changing rooms is a pain .
Yes I agree OP that they have that captive audience walking through their doors every week.
