Is it me or are Next and Tesco just ruling the clothes market these days?

Just been in my local Next and Tesco, Christmas outfits literally everywhere. Sooooo many choices of Xmas jumpers, like 20 different styles, just got woken. This never used to be the case.

Seeing as most smaller clothing jobs have either closed or been acquired by one of the giants and put online, is it me or are Tesco and Next (maybe George and Tu as well), just benefitting massively out of footfall in their shops?

I used to love Tu clothing, but not bought any since they shut changing rooms.

Same!

Tiiredofthiss · 28/11/2023 21:13

Haven't bought from ether of them for years personally.

The Next in Meadowhall is always empty

No it isn't Confused

willowstar · 29/11/2023 07:06

Our Sainsbury's just had a big revamp and expanded the clothing section significantly which they did partly by getting rid of the changing room entirely and using the space for more clothes. I used to like Sainsbury's for clothes but it is about 20km away and I am not going to buy things without being able to try them of first so I won't even look there anymore.

I don't go in there all that regularly and I hate having clothes hanging round the house or car waiting to be returned. I would much rather try on and then buy what actually fits. So they have lost my custom.

It is whenever l walk through. I’ve never ever seen it rammed except in the sales. In fact I’ve never seen any Next store rammed. I’m always struck by how empty they feel.

PinkLemons99 · 29/11/2023 09:38

Sorry OP, but I cannot work out what you’re trying to say. Is English your second language?

Sooooo many choices of Xmas jumpers, like 20 different styles, just got woken.

What on earth is that supposed to mean? 🤯

Goldenbear · 29/11/2023 10:47

I have bought a couple of sweaters and tracksuit trouser style lounging clothes, WFH day clothes in Sainsbury's but if buying at the cheaper end I prefer making the effort to go to town and H&M, I am mid 40s and think I have bought the most clothes from H&M over the course of my life. At more expensive end prefer some John Lewis stuff and Free People but that is more your once a year purchase with FP.

MrsSkylerWhite · 29/11/2023 10:48

I buy everything second hand. Don’t see many Tesco items.

Goldenbear · 29/11/2023 10:49

So no not Next and Tesco although when visiting my Mum in the past would go to a huge Tesco near to where she lived and buy the kids some things like pyjamas or a fairy costume or slipper socks etc. But now they are teenagers, I don't go there.

sunglassesonthetable · 29/11/2023 10:58

*no. not remotely.

in fact i don’t think i own a single item from either and wouldn’t ever be drawn to even consider either*

Wowsers !😄

This answer is still making me laugh!

so you can’t think of a single clothing shop that

a) you don’t have anything at all from
b) the clothing there doesn’t appeal to you for whatever reason

SkylinePigeon · 29/11/2023 11:04

There's a cost of living crisis and people are busy, so it makes sense that more people are grabbing their clothes in supermarkets while they do the weekly shop, rather than going clothes shopping specially.

But that's hardly "ruling the clothing market." I've never stepped foot in a Next in my life, and I wouldn't dream of purchasing clothes in a supermarket.

OP clarified it was a typo and intended to read, "Xmas jumpers, 20 different styles, just for women."

sunglassesonthetable · 29/11/2023 11:06

So good to hear how many people are buying 2nd hand and pre love, Vinted etc.
I buy a bit. Need to up my game.

Heard yesterday on radio programme , that roughly speaking, if the world stopped producing more garments there are enough clothes left to clothe the entire world for 30 years.

Obvs you can pick holes in that, but you get the gist.

MrsKeats · 29/11/2023 11:10

No.
Wouldn't buy in either.

Of course. 100%

I think it's the turn of phrase.👌🏼 😄

We're all different obviously but sounds incredibly imperious.

sunglassesonthetable · 29/11/2023 11:13

And spoke too soon. "Supermarkets !" etc.

Each to their own.

ifonly4 · 29/11/2023 11:17

I guess it depends where you shop. We have a reasonably big Tescos, but they only sell childrens clothes and nightwear - haven't had reason to go into that section the last month or so, so no idea what's on offer.

I tend to shop where it's convenient regardless (don't have time for long walks around town as I'm normally on a mission!) - M&S, Next, Primark, FatFace and White Stuff are the most convenient for me, occasionally Sainsburys if we need other things from retail park.

pacora · 29/11/2023 11:17

Hbh17 · 28/11/2023 16:09

I have never bought clothes in Tesco.
I haven't bought clothes in Next since the 1990s, when their quality dropped off a cliff.

So possibly it's just you, OP?

Same here

theatrical · 29/11/2023 11:19

I've never bought any clothes from either place,

sunglassesonthetable · 29/11/2023 11:33

The thing about Next is they are so quick and efficient in delivery and logistics.

They got me specialist, Addidas rugby studs ( because they do lots of brands ) the next day. Ahead of all the specialist sports places.

And just time for the big match. Who'd have thought.

baklavagoddess · 29/11/2023 11:35

It's not just you op, I've noticed this too and so have others I know, also seen loads of 'hauls' on tiktok of supermarket clothes

CVVW · 29/11/2023 11:35

I order from Next online but mainly the other brands they sell because I can't be bothered to go shopping most of the time.

They are efficient and we have a Next close by that I take returns to. Also the one off annual delivery charge is so cheap.

justasking111 · 29/11/2023 15:37

Anyone wonder if it's regional up north and in Wales outside the cities our shops are pretty small so we're not seeing full stock.

I went into our new Range store for coronation stuff I'd seen online NADA at the store. The staff member explained that they were a lower grade store so didn't receive that particular stock. So their stores were graded. It's a good sized store on two levels so just how big is the Range in cities?
