Is it me or are Next and Tesco just ruling the clothes market these days?

Just been in my local Next and Tesco, Christmas outfits literally everywhere. Sooooo many choices of Xmas jumpers, like 20 different styles, just got woken. This never used to be the case.

Seeing as most smaller clothing jobs have either closed or been acquired by one of the giants and put online, is it me or are Tesco and Next (maybe George and Tu as well), just benefitting massively out of footfall in their shops?

@GreyTS H&M is so overpriced and their clothes are so poorly presented and hung up creased. Would rather look in a supermarket.

AuntieMarys · 28/11/2023 17:09

When you're tall, Next is about the only option.

I heard LongTallSally is at Very now.

Would love the people saying no, to say where they but their clothes. I find everything else so expensive.

I just had a look at Next funnily enough and was surprised to see how pricy it is.

I'm on a No Buy this year to try and re-educate myself about what I actually need, and also because our monthly mortgage payment has gone up several hundred pounds. (Thanks Tories!)

uncomfortablydumb53 · 28/11/2023 18:29

Clothes wise I buy everything else on Vinted( better quality brands often BNWT)

thenightsky · 28/11/2023 17:02

I used to love Tu clothing, but not bought any since they shut changing rooms.

These comments are surprising me. I've just tried on jeans at Sainsburys. Are all the fitting rooms meant to be shut?

MRSMTO · 28/11/2023 18:32

I don't buy anything from Tesco or next anymore, everything appears so aged and frumpy. The last year or so ?
I've been buying al my clothes on Vinted. I really like diesel skinny jeans, iv got 8 pairs but only one pair bought new from the shop, I bought the rest, new with tags, from Vinted for the same price as the one pair new from the shop!

GreyTS · 28/11/2023 18:33

@43ontherocksporfavor perhaps, I mostly shop online in Zara, Cos and Arket but you did ask for cheap. My teenagers buy everything apart from overpriced sportswear in H&M and Primark, lots of crop tops and spandex for sure but they also do a lot of great basics in small sizes, t-shirt, jeans, vests, sweaters etc

TheHawkisHowling · 28/11/2023 18:33

Eh not for me. Neither make any clothes that would fit me because of vanity sizing.

GreyTS · 28/11/2023 18:38

Just for example, lace dress in H&M, fashion at a low cost......lace dress in Next, frump city

Libertass · 28/11/2023 18:43

Commercially, Next is a hugely successful & exceptionally well-run business. In terms of the quality of its merchandise, it is a shadow of its former self. Back in the 80s & 90s, Next was synonymous with affordable, stylish good quality clothes. Now, they sell the same cheap tat as everyone else at inflated prices. That’s how they make such enormous profits, of course.

Tesco clothes have always been pretty horrid, but what do you expect for the prices they charge? You get what you pay for, obv.

Roselilly36 · 28/11/2023 18:45

Not bought clothing in either of these store for years, I don’t even think of them if I am thinking of purchasing tbh.

pinkfongg · 28/11/2023 18:45

Frasers · 28/11/2023 17:23

This is such a confusing thread. I honestly thought the op had made a typo, as no one would really think that Tesco and next ruled the clothing market surely?

now the op is saying have they expanded their range as smaller shops shut. What smaller clothes shops. Yes people buy cheap clothes when they go to the supermarket. Tesco, Asda, whatever. Yes people buy from next. Just as they buy from lk bennet, John Lewis, reiss, H&M, Zara, tk maxx, primark and Marks and Sparks, jd sports and a multitude of others.

But are these shops selling as large a quantity as Tesco? I doubt it.

This thread is so strange (not OP). So many people get their clothes at these places now, it's cheaper! They are definitely popular

43ontherocksporfavor · 28/11/2023 19:23

@Libertass how rude! Horrid clothing? There’s good and bad in every store. If you have style you’re able to pick out what’s good in any place.

floofbag · 28/11/2023 19:27

I woke in next and our store is rammed every single day

The reason is we have the credit account and our website literally sells everything

I was never a fan of the clothes but actually we have some great clothes now and very few returns due to faults ..

They have bought a lot of the high street stores and willl continue to do so so actually the op is correct

Tesco too have great clothes which they sell online on next website too..

I hate the Next website! It certainly does sell everything, almost literally. It's huge, clunky and annoying to navigate.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 28/11/2023 19:33

I doubt they're selling much less tbh.

TodayForTomorrow · 28/11/2023 19:35

I've had some decent stuff from George this year. I've got a long pleated skirt and a cream
marl type jumper. Their bras also go up to either a G or F cup now, so I got a few of those as well and have no complaints.

ReadtheReviews · 28/11/2023 19:39

I use next for the children's things. Had some.lovely things rhe last couple of years. I buy online and they stock a lot of different brands. I also had a lovely jumpsuit for me that was what I wore most last summer.

Hbh17 · 28/11/2023 16:09

I have never bought clothes in Tesco.
I haven't bought clothes in Next since the 1990s, when their quality dropped off a cliff.

So possibly it's just you, OP?

Next carry a LOT of brands. I don't think I've ever bought next brand but why wouldn't you shop there for your big brand lingerie, big brand sports wear etc.

SD1978 · 28/11/2023 19:57

Yup, I actually like the clothes from Asda, Sainsbury's and Tesco- they are cheap, decent enough and affordable. So no eye rolling here of no no, I couldn't possibly buy from there like some people Hmm there children's clothing, and school clothing is also budget friendly so yes, I'm pretty happy for a browse

The Next in Meadowhall is always empty

TroglodytesTroglodytes · 28/11/2023 20:24

Both Tesco and Asda closed the changing rooms during covid and never reopened so I never buy in them. I tend to buy mostly in Sainsbury and Matalan. Although I’m thinking of doing a no clothes buying year in 2024.

floofbag · 28/11/2023 20:45

The next website is most definitely huge . The amount of stuff we sell is crazy . The filters work pretty well though .

Ours is always rammed and soo busy .

WinteryWonderland · 28/11/2023 20:50

thenightsky · 28/11/2023 16:13

I've had some good stuff from Tesco, but not for years. I won't buy from them now they've closed the changing rooms and on-line too. Not traipsing 16 miles home to try stuff on, then 16 miles back to return it all. Fuck em.

Same!
Also used to buy a few bits from Sainsbury's, office stuff etc, but they closed the changing rooms and I'm not traipsing back to return it so I never buy anything there now. Fk em!
