Is it me or are Next and Tesco just ruling the clothes market these days?

Just been in my local Next and Tesco, Christmas outfits literally everywhere. Sooooo many choices of Xmas jumpers, like 20 different styles, just got woken. This never used to be the case.

Seeing as most smaller clothing jobs have either closed or been acquired by one of the giants and put online, is it me or are Tesco and Next (maybe George and Tu as well), just benefitting massively out of footfall in their shops?

OP posts:
Vettrianofan · 28/11/2023 17:23

I have not shopped in Next so can't comment on their clothing.

Frasers · 28/11/2023 17:23

This is such a confusing thread. I honestly thought the op had made a typo, as no one would really think that Tesco and next ruled the clothing market surely?

now the op is saying have they expanded their range as smaller shops shut. What smaller clothes shops. Yes people buy cheap clothes when they go to the supermarket. Tesco, Asda, whatever. Yes people buy from next. Just as they buy from lk bennet, John Lewis, reiss, H&M, Zara, tk maxx, primark and Marks and Sparks, jd sports and a multitude of others.

Needmorelego · 28/11/2023 17:24

@43ontherocksporfavor pay for the clothes at self service or customer service then?
Supermarkets don't sell unwrapped meat though so I don't see the issue personally.

Why wouldn't anyone think that is true....next have consistently been top Uk clothing retailer for several years (M&S on its heels now)....it's facts that they dominate the market

Makemydaypunk · 28/11/2023 17:17

Next is good because a lot of their stores are in retail parks now which means no paying for car parking and easy to collect and return goods purchased online, so yes I think they have captured quite a market share, it’s easy shopping.

Next market share is declining, not growing.

DaftyInTheMiddle · 28/11/2023 17:25

I'm asking if you've also noticed that the range in these shops has multiplied massively in the last few years
The big Tesco local to me has barely any clothes in it, it’s absolutely rubbish. Tried to get trainers for my toddler recently, they had no kids shoes at all bar slippers.

Bluevelvetsofa · 28/11/2023 17:27

Next, M&S, Tu and probably loads of others sell other brands. Reiss, Sosander, Nobody’s Child, loads of others I can’t remember are all in those stores online.

43ontherocksporfavor · 28/11/2023 17:30

@Needmorelego there is always leakage and food customers use the self service too.

They don’t dominate. They have less than 7 percent now and it’s dropping annually. They are not close to domination.

market dominance means over 50 percent. 7 percent is not dominance. It is far from it.

sunglassesonthetable · 28/11/2023 17:37

As an aside I have never seen leakage at the till. I wouldn't like anything sat on meat leakage! They deal with anything like that smartish.

Needmorelego · 28/11/2023 17:37

@43ontherocksporfavor valid point I suppose. Supermarket staff are pretty good at cleaning the till area if it needs it though.
I probably buy more non-food items at supermarkets than I do food tbh.
I order food as home delivery.
I go to the supermarkets for toys, books, magazines, home things, Nintendo games, birthday cards, stationary......and clothes 😂

Needmorelego · 28/11/2023 17:39

I went into a large M+S yesterday. I had seen some Christmas items on their website and went to look for them.
They didn't have them. Not obscure things - but stuff like tree decorations.
There was more tumbleweed in there than customers.

housethatbuiltme · 28/11/2023 17:54

I don't shop in Next or Tesco if thats your questions.

Never shopped in Next (over priced and frumpy) and my town has Asda not Tesco.

I buy most clothes from Primark or Vinted now. I wouldn't rule out buying Tesco items on Vinted but I'm not driving to Tescos 3 towns over to shop for a jumper.

sHREDDIES19 · 28/11/2023 17:57

Wow some really haughty and pathetic responses here. As if shopping in the likes of such places is beneath them! Actually OP I think an awful lot of (normal) folk have clothes from these shops. Like lots of places the quality will vary from item to item. I’ve got quite a few myself it’s easy to have a browse whilst doing the food shop. Mostly I use Vinted nowadays.

LolaSmiles · 28/11/2023 18:02

@LolaSmiles I know someone who used to work in the clothing department of one of the supermarkets. Unfortunately people used the changing rooms for shop lifting, doing drugs, taking a shit or even having sex.
Yes 🤮🤢🤮
They don't have enough staff to have someone permanently allocated to monitor changing rooms in supermarkets
It doesn't surprise me in some of the stores.
It seems a shame that instead of making the clothes offering more like a clothes shop like Primark or other affordable retailers, the clothing part of the business seems to rely on people buying unsuitable clothes and then making it more awkward for people to return it (by closing the clothing department tills, having to queue up at customer service to get a refund etc). It doesn't make a nice shopping experience.

My local big Tesco store has substantially reduced it's food offer and you've got to walk through a huge clothing, homeware, toys and seasonal section before you get to the groceries. I suspect they're probably turning themselves into Argos style shop+food.

ithinkmyheadiscavingin · 28/11/2023 18:09

I like Next for jeans and sweaters.

Not all of their clothes are poorly made. You just have to look at what you're buying. Like anywhere.

Tesco's quality is increasingly poor: sweaters and knit items will clearly lose their shape very quickly, etc. And their shoes were so poorly constructed they stopped selling them. Closing their fitting rooms clinched the deal: not worth the time.

Itisyourturntowashthebath · 28/11/2023 18:10

My fave supermarket for clothes is aldi followed by Tu at Sainsbury's.

JesusAndMaryPain · 28/11/2023 18:13

I don't buy clothes from either. I don't go in their stores in person or online.
I also don't know anyone who wears Christmas clothes! To me, Christmas clothes are like a scam.
Sorry OP, I don't agree. Maybe I'm the strange one!

TheKnittedCharacter · 28/11/2023 18:13

I’ve never bought anything from Tesco and the only thing I used to buy from Next was their coated skinnies, which I’m fairly gutted are now so unfashionable.

NotFastButFurious · 28/11/2023 18:17

I haven’t had anything from Next for years and rarely go in to look for stuff.
I don’t shop in Tesco as I don’t have a convenient one. I used to buy a lot from Tu but haven’t had anything for ages as it’s just not been nice. I rarely go high street shopping but it’s easy to browse in the supermarket while doing the weekly shop.

evtheria · 28/11/2023 18:21

I don't think they're ruling the markets at all, but I do agree Tesco has ramped up their clothing offerings hugely the last few years. I have 2 coats that I'm regularly asked about from there - gallingly, more often than my more expensive ones! I think the toddler stuff is usually lovely, too.
The boys section aged 7+ is truly GRIM, though.

avocadotofu · 28/11/2023 18:21

I don't own anything from either retailer for myself and I don't think DS5 has anything either. I don't think the quality is very good.

GreyTS · 28/11/2023 18:21

Lochroy · 28/11/2023 16:51

Would love the people saying no, to say where they but their clothes. I find everything else so expensive.

Primark? H&M, similar prices but a lot more fashion forward. Personally I've never bought anything in either Tesco (apart from groceries occasionally) or Next, frump central both of them

43ontherocksporfavor · 28/11/2023 18:22

F&F used to be great in the early 2000s. I’ve still got a leather biker jacket that was £40 and some leather boots. I still look and if I really like something I will hold it through the till . I bought a summer dress in August . There were rails of them reduced. Really nice linen and cheesecloth designs but I think they were left because you can’t try on. I had to return mine as it was soooo long!

uncomfortablydumb53 · 28/11/2023 18:23

The only thing I've ever bought in a supermarket is multipack pants since M&S quality went downhill
So it's just you
