Is it me or are Next and Tesco just ruling the clothes market these days?

Just been in my local Next and Tesco, Christmas outfits literally everywhere. Sooooo many choices of Xmas jumpers, like 20 different styles, just got woken. This never used to be the case.

Seeing as most smaller clothing jobs have either closed or been acquired by one of the giants and put online, is it me or are Tesco and Next (maybe George and Tu as well), just benefitting massively out of footfall in their shops?

Tesco isn't online clothes anymore so I doubt they have a big market share. Asda do lovely cheapish kids clothes so I order a lot that online but very rarely shop in Asda. I was very thankful to supermarkets that sold clothes in the pandemic with then 4 kids at school growing fast.

What pisses me off is that most clothes shops can sell endless tat, but school uniform is always sold out. Can't find and boys wide fit trousers nor age 16 plus trousers. I thought it was a covid thing but it's still like it now. In fact I have to source a lot of uniform on Vinted.

@Needmorelego well they could employ more staff couldn’t they?? Also hate paying for clothes alongside peoples groceries. Tesco closed their till by the clothing which is a big turn off.

Needmorelego · 28/11/2023 17:09

@cornflakesandtea I also can't afford Next but even if I could I don't think it's any better quality than Primark. I think that's what people mean by "poor quality". It's poor quality doesn't justify the price.

AuntieMarys · 28/11/2023 17:09

When you're tall, Next is about the only option.

GinBlossom94 · 28/11/2023 17:11

I love Asda George, their Wonderfit jeans are really good, actually a good percentage of my clothes is from there, an no I'm not "on the bones of my arse" either

UrsulaBelle · 28/11/2023 17:12

I quite like Next for my DSes who are in their 20s. I do buy some stuff from Sainsbury’s TU for myself, but no, I don’t think Next and Tesco’s are ruling the clothes market. Especially not Tesco.

PosterBoy · 28/11/2023 17:12

Tesco seem to have massively expanded their clothing range, and I like their stuff this season as well.

Needmorelego · 28/11/2023 17:12

@43ontherocksporfavor in theory yes they could employ more staff - but it's hard to justify the wages of someone to literally stand and monitor the changing rooms all day. The clothing staff already double up as checkout staff so they are back and forth all day between different parts of the shop.

dhxxx · 28/11/2023 17:13

Next are the leading players in woman's clothing so it's not just you - it's facts that they are ruling!

justasking111 · 28/11/2023 17:13

We've never had a big Tesco so can't answer that. George at Asda yes for the odd summer teeshirt for my DS. Next has always been awful and not cheap from memory.

I guess supermarkets are easy, you nip in for food and impulse buy clothes.

Primark are the cheapest in this area the ASDA across the road has suffered I expect since they opened

StaunchMomma · 28/11/2023 17:13

Desecratedcoconut · 28/11/2023 17:05

Do you run through all clothing shops or just the cheap ones? 😁

I can't really claim that to be true when every time I 'fall' into a Primark I seem to lose an hour and hundred odd quid 😂

sixteenfurryfeet · 28/11/2023 17:14

Geneve82 · 28/11/2023 16:10

no. not remotely.

in fact i don’t think i own a single item from either and wouldn’t ever be drawn to even consider either

Why not?

Needmorelego · 28/11/2023 17:14

@43ontherocksporfavor why does it matter if you are buying clothes while other people are buying groceries? What does it matter what other people are buying?

43ontherocksporfavor · 28/11/2023 17:14

@Needmorelego but if they also ran the section(stock, tidying. Checkout) then it’s a standard clothing shop job. Plenty of people would do that .

orchardsquare · 28/11/2023 17:14

I think supermarkets in general - well Tesco, Sainsbury's and George at Asda do, mostly because of the price and ease of shopping. Next is popular partly because of the variety of brands they stock and the fact it is available on credit so you can order loads of stuff and return most of it.

43ontherocksporfavor · 28/11/2023 17:15

Next is fab for next day delivery/ collection.

Needmorelego · 28/11/2023 17:15

@dhxxx is that really true? That actually does surprise me. They never seem very busy in there.

43ontherocksporfavor · 28/11/2023 17:15

@Needmorelego because i do t want to put my clothes on the conveyor belt where a joint of meat has just been.

Yes it's true...because I work for one of the competitors

Makemydaypunk · 28/11/2023 17:17

Next is good because a lot of their stores are in retail parks now which means no paying for car parking and easy to collect and return goods purchased online, so yes I think they have captured quite a market share, it’s easy shopping.

PickAChew · 28/11/2023 17:19

Ds2(17) lives in joggers and plain t-shirts from next - he still fits their boys' size 16, which not many stores go up to. The long sleeved ones he wears are a lovely thick soft cotton and wash brilliantly, even when I've had to throw them in at 60C.

It's because of their online presence and the fact they have lots of partner brands

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 28/11/2023 17:21

I don't think having a large range means they are ruling the clothes market. Like previous posters, I have never bought clothes in Tesco and don't buy clothes from Next any more because they are crap quality.

Needmorelego · 28/11/2023 17:22

@43ontherocksporfavor it is "standard" to be rushing around between departments in retail yes. But to have a properly managed changing room you need someone literally there all the time. In Primark you have staff whose job it is to run the changing room. They are there for their shift or if they are sent to do a different task someone replaces them. There is always someone there.
Of course if humans weren't so disgusting and dishonest changing rooms wouldn't need to be monitored.
As usual the revolting minority spoil it for everyone else.

justasking111 · 28/11/2023 17:22

I shop for DILs and grandchildren. Buy online from many sources as directed/advised. But we live in the sticks so our stores range of clothing is smaller. If I lived/shopped in a city it might be different.
