Is it me or are Next and Tesco just ruling the clothes market these days?

Just been in my local Next and Tesco, Christmas outfits literally everywhere. Sooooo many choices of Xmas jumpers, like 20 different styles, just got woken. This never used to be the case.

Seeing as most smaller clothing jobs have either closed or been acquired by one of the giants and put online, is it me or are Tesco and Next (maybe George and Tu as well), just benefitting massively out of footfall in their shops?

Might be what's in your locality. I have no clothes from Next and one single item from Tesco that I bought 15 years ago.

) you don’t have anything at all from
b) the clothing there doesn’t appeal to you for whatever reason

Of course. 100%

I think it's the turn of phrase.👌🏼 😄

We're all different obviously but sounds incredibly imperious.

to not shop in or own anything from…. two shops is “imperious” 😂

Not at all.

Your post.

Geneve82 · 28/11/2023 16:10

no. not remotely.

in fact i don’t think i own a single item from either and wouldn’t ever be drawn to even consider either

how is this imperious?

Saschka · 29/11/2023 16:14

It’s possible they rule the children’s Christmas jumper market. Because who wants to spend more than £5 on a jumper your child is going to wear to school once on Christmas Jumper day, then never wear again?

Do they rule the UK fashion market? Nope.

Pippu · 29/11/2023 16:17

Can't imagine why Tesco do well as they have no changing rooms. It's a one hour drive to my Tesco so I get groceries delivered and I'm never going to buy clothes that I will likely have to return.

luckylavender · 29/11/2023 16:27

It's you. I can't remember the last time I bought anything in either

JamieKnows · 29/11/2023 17:39

Nope, no clothes from Tesco here either. It's you OP

ElevenSeven · 29/11/2023 17:45

Don’t buy anything from either

sanityisamyth · 29/11/2023 19:30

Don't think I've got any Tesco clothes but have a few things from Asda, especially uniform for DS.

Wow some really haughty and pathetic responses here. As if shopping in the likes of such places is beneath them! Actually OP I think an awful lot of (normal) folk have clothes from these shops. Like lots of places the quality will vary from item to item. I’ve got quite a few myself it’s easy to have a browse whilst doing the food shop. Mostly I use Vinted nowadays.

Agree. I'm hoping I don't know most of the people on this thread in real life because if I do you must be really sneering at my clothes. I wear quite a few things from Next, and today bought a jumper in Tesco and was quite tempted by a dress and a coat. Now I've discovered I'm 'frump central' and all the other insults thrown around on here.

MrsKeats · 29/11/2023 20:59

The reason I don't go in Next is because the chairman is a Brexit supporter who gave millions to the leave campaign.
Nothing at all to do with being haughty.

LovedMyLastNameItHadToGo · 29/11/2023 21:00

Nope! Not for me, I think as I’ve got older I’ve chosen quality really.

Where do you buy your clothes from?

nettie434 · 29/11/2023 21:27

If you look at information on profits, you will see that @pinkfongg is right. Tesco and Next have both reported profits on clothing in the last few years. It's been a bit up and down (as it is for all clothing retailers when a cold snap or heatwave affects people's buying habits) but overall they have been very successful.

I assume it's partly because Next is so successful with its online sales and partly because both retailers benefit from out of town stores. They have both been very successful in identifying essential ranges which will be bought by a wide range of people.

I'll have a look. I want to try different stores.

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 30/11/2023 09:17

Well, Tesco is convenient for a lot of people ( not MN obvs. People on here hate Tesco with an inexplicable passion) , especially if they don’t have access to a lot of other clothing retailers. Compared to some ‘small shops’ it is generally clean, well lit and you don’t have ‘popular’ music blasting at a decibel which positively hurts. The closure of the changing rooms severely limits what I would look at there though

I buy two mens t shirts to garden at Tesco in most years. The material is much thicker than womens, and the cut allows more bending and squatting, also no silly declarations printed on them. They get pretty bashed by the end of a good year. 🗑 If they had changing rooms I d probably get my gardening joggers there for the same reason. I see a lot of women ( presumably) buying ‘work ‘ clothing for men ( it can’t be for them, the sizes would be 🙀)

Portakalkedi · 30/11/2023 09:25

No, no Next or Tesco within 25 miles, have only ever been in Next once and didn't think it was anything special. I get Tesco deliveries for food, but as they don't sell clothes online I wouldn't know anything about that side of their business. I have had some nice things from Tu at Sainsburys, who operate in 21st century style by offering mail order.

Needmorelego · 30/11/2023 09:26

@Allthegoodnamesarechosen it is the convenience for most people. In the last 20 years so many retailers that sold clothes - especially for children - have gone.
Woolworths, Adams, Littlewoods, BHS, Debenhams, Top Shop, Dorothy Perkins etc.
All gone.
Unless people have easy access to a Primark then most "town centres" don't actually have any clothes shops.
People need food so people go to a supermarket. While they are there - they get clothes.
All about the convenience!

Everyone is "normal." I hate this idea that you're not "normal" unless you shop in ASDA and eat fish fingers, or do anything that's not coded as white working class British.

I wouldn't even think to judge what someone else was wearing (except for real fur or stuff like MAGA hats), I wouldn't be able to tell the difference between a t-shirt from Tesco and one from the Gap or one from a designer clothing store.

I don't buy clothes from supermarkets because I do almost all of my shopping online (I wouldn't have a clue where to go to find a Next - Google Maps tells me the nearest branch of Next is miles away, in some random business park outside London) and because my job/career expects me to dress in a certain way. It's nothing to do with money - I buy a lot of stuff from TheRealReal or other consignment stores, I bought a pair of Prada shoes for £25, a Missoni silk jumpsuit for £18, that's less than a lot of really basic clothes in Tesco. I have looked at the clothes in Tesco once or twice and was surprised how expensive they are.

pinkfongg · 30/11/2023 15:49

This has turned into a really interesting thread thanks everyone for your replies!

One thing I have to say though; when has Next quality been pants? It's nice quality isn't it!?
Also Tesco clothes aren't cheap or expensive, they're in the middle, and I'd say the quality is the same - that's what makes me think they're 'ruling' the market, because they are really beginning to invest in that department now..?

OP posts:
BottleRocketInTheSky · 30/11/2023 16:09

I buy from Next quite often and find the quality good for the price. My friends use it a lot too.

I don’t buy from Tesco but I rarely go there as we have our food shop delivered. When I do go there, lots of people have clothes in their trolly with food so it seems popular.

Tasma · 30/11/2023 16:21

I buy pretty much all my clothes from Tesco, very few clothing shops locally and my local tesco has a huge selection and you can go after work when the others are already closed.

It's all relative though, isn't it? People who buy their clothes at more expensive shops are going to consider Next and Tesco cheap and poor quality.
