Which films have stunning soundtracks

I was catching up on The Hunger Games this weekend (new film next week!) but as I was also crocheting (gotta keep the hands busy!) wasn’t watching but just listening with my headphones and glancing at it now and then. I had always known that HG was visually stunning but I was really amazed that it also has an amazing soundtrack. Not necessarily songs but lots of unique HG sounds- the sound of the knives for example or the tracker jacks, the host etc which make it absolutely unique to HG. Similarly the James Bond music is so uniquely JB that you can identify it in milliseconds.

Which other films have soundtracks that are as strong or stronger than the visuals?

I have been listening to Michael Nyman scores recently - he is famous for The Piano, but also scored The Draughtsman's Contact and Drowning by numbers. I found it ideal when doing more repetitive tasks, craft etc.

Gladiator - all Enya gives me chills

Anything involving Clint Mansell or Hans Zimmer. There are playlists of their stuff (across lots of films) on Spotify and Apple Music.

Craig Armstrong had done lots of scores but also albums of his own. Worth a listen.

I really love the soundtrack to the Painted Veil. Amazing film, but such a beautiful soundtrack as well

Gladiator isn't Enya - it's Lisa Gerrard from Dead Can Dance :) Enya is Lord of the Rings.

I was going to say Clint Mansell soundtracks too. I don't often enjoy the films they're attached to (not a fan of Darren Aronofsky's self-indulgent films) but the music is ace.

Also love Nicholas Britell's score to If Beale Street Could Talk.

Was just about to say that!

'An Officer and a Gentleman." (Love lift us up where we belong).

lifesabitchandthenyoudie · 12/11/2023 11:32

Love love love Local Hero!

Also Into The Wild; Eddie Vedder did all the music/songs for it, utterly beautiful.

Just listened to Craig Armstrong (one track with Liz Fraser) 10/10 and ditto Interstellar- both of which I had heard already but didn’t know I knew. Off to YouTube a few more!

Paris, Texas - Ry Cooder's guitar sound is so melancholy and atmospheric.

Vitriolinsanity · 12/11/2023 11:37

The Godfather

It weaves throughout the entire film brilliantly.

Also Star Wars.

AliMonkey · 12/11/2023 11:38

First response by @LQNavarro got it in one - The Mission was my immediate thought when I read the OP's question, it 's one of the few soundtracks I listen to as music and it frequently brings tears to my eyes. The visuals are also pretty good as well.

Aurasauras · 12/11/2023 11:38

Some really iconic films here. I actually have never seen Into the Wild but it looks amazing- is it on any streaming platforms such as Netflix at all?
