Which films have stunning soundtracks

I was catching up on The Hunger Games this weekend (new film next week!) but as I was also crocheting (gotta keep the hands busy!) wasn’t watching but just listening with my headphones and glancing at it now and then. I had always known that HG was visually stunning but I was really amazed that it also has an amazing soundtrack. Not necessarily songs but lots of unique HG sounds- the sound of the knives for example or the tracker jacks, the host etc which make it absolutely unique to HG. Similarly the James Bond music is so uniquely JB that you can identify it in milliseconds.

Which other films have soundtracks that are as strong or stronger than the visuals?

Any Quentin Tarantino film!

Also Amelie

The music right through Last of the Mohicans. Beloved of buskers in many town centres

The soundtrack of Goodfellas is great and tracks the years

Last of the Mohicans (hauntingly beautiful)
Dances with Wolves
10 Things I hate about you (upbeat and fun songs)

Promontory from LOTM is my morning alarm and it still gives me chills EVERY morning! Beautiful piece of music.

So many great films mentioned here.

The Star Wars soundtrack is probably my ultimate favourite, though. I don’t skip a single track!

LearnFromMyMistakes · 12/11/2023 11:59

The Mission and anything else by composer Ennio Morricone,
Last of the Mohicans
Titanic

CurlewKate · 12/11/2023 12:00

I have been listening to Michael Nyman scores recently - he is famous for The Piano, but also scored The Draughtsman's Contact and Drowning by numbers. I found it ideal when doing more repetitive tasks, craft etc.

Nyman is utterly fantastic. Keep looking - there’s lots more stuff of his to enjoy! The Draughtsman’s Contract is particularly fabulous though, I agree.

NotMyDayJob · 12/11/2023 12:04

Can't believe how far I had to scroll to get to Last of the Mohicans! Possibly one of the Greatest film scores ever.

Also, slightly random one, Shakespeare in Love. The bit at the end where Gwyneth is in the water, beautiful. It was in BBC recently so the film should be on iPlayer.

I absolutely love a good film (or TV) soundtrack and here are some of my favourite ones

Hans Zimmer - Dune, Inception and The Last Samurai in particular but he's also done stuff like The Blue Planet

Thomas Newman - Meet Joe Black

Ryuichi Sakamoto - Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence

John Barry - it's hard to find anything of his that I don't like but Out of Africa, Dances With Wolves, Midnight Cowboy, The Persuaders etc

John Murphy - 28 Days/Weeks Later

Jung Jaeil - Squid Game

Carter Burwell - All the Twilight films, The Banshees of Inisherin

LightDrizzle · 12/11/2023 12:08

Yes to The Mission!

I love the soundtrack to In Bruges. It hasn’t got a big number but I think it is brilliant with its various themes for different characters, particularly Harry.

BoobyDazzler · 12/11/2023 12:09

Top Gun 🤣
Oh Brother Where Art Thou’
Interstellar
Moulin Rouge

lifesabitchandthenyoudie · 12/11/2023 12:11

@Randommother tbf he could sing the phone book and I'd be right there. He's my freebie 😍

To the person who suggested This is England, thank you will have a look for it!

TidyDancer · 12/11/2023 12:16

Where the Crawdads Sing. The whole soundtrack pretty much is just beautiful.

KatBurglar · 12/11/2023 12:16

Carter Burwell finally got a mention! Hurray!

His scores for Coen Brothers' films are amazing, Miller's Crossing in particular, although I have a real fondness for O Brother, Whereart Thou?

The Last Temptation Of Christ soundtrack by Peter Gabriel gives me goosebumps. The film, not so much,

I agree with Mohicans, 10 Things, and of course The Sting but they are excellent films in every other way too, so less surprising, I think.

Tron Legacy is basically an extended video for Daft Punk. Both the Spiderverse films have wonderful soundtracks.

And everything Hans Zimmer ever does, the talanted bastard.

Instinct1 · 12/11/2023 12:17

Armageddon

Equilibrium

AllTangledUpInTitlesAndTiaras · 12/11/2023 12:19

Somewhere in Time has a wonderful score.

bathroomcupnoard · 12/11/2023 12:21

Dr Zhivago

If you like
Pop music then Highlander.
An eclectic mix with synth then Bladerunner.
Orchestral then The Big Country.
Zither would be The Third Man.
