Which films have stunning soundtracks

I was catching up on The Hunger Games this weekend (new film next week!) but as I was also crocheting (gotta keep the hands busy!) wasn’t watching but just listening with my headphones and glancing at it now and then. I had always known that HG was visually stunning but I was really amazed that it also has an amazing soundtrack. Not necessarily songs but lots of unique HG sounds- the sound of the knives for example or the tracker jacks, the host etc which make it absolutely unique to HG. Similarly the James Bond music is so uniquely JB that you can identify it in milliseconds.

Which other films have soundtracks that are as strong or stronger than the visuals?

The original score from Conan the barbarian by Basil Poledouris is on of my favourites. Well worth a listen.

What? Has no one mentioned Max Richter and Shutter Island?

Also try out Bryce / Aaron Dessner soundtracks - I think The Revenant was one?

On a different slant perhaps - if you like a selection of great songs I love the soundtracks to a not well known film "Heavy" (ft.Liv Tyler and Debbie Harry) and "Empire Records"

Tangerine Dreams soundtrack to The Sorcerer is also pretty good listened to loud and in the dark.

I'll probably think of some more in a minute.

Lion King (1994)

Not necessarily the songs but the scored during the powerful moments give me goosebumps every time.

Good one! Agree 100%

Cold mountain is quite good - fits the film.

Watchmen is a really underrated film and I adore the soundtrack. It's just perfect!

There's another that's on the tip of my tongue but I can't remember. If I do, I'll be back.

The Secret Garden

GlitchStitch · 12/11/2023 19:05

Last of the Mohicans has an amazing soundtrack as others have said.

Also a bit niche but I'm a big fan of Turkish TV dramas and they all have brilliant scores, unique for the show and can convey comedy, sadness etc. It's definitely part of what makes them so great.

Mysterian · 12/11/2023 19:54

The Blues Brothers films. Just masses and masses of great musicians. James Brown, John Lee Hooker, BB King, Eric Clapton, Bo Diddly, Isacc Hayes, Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles, Cab Calloway, Chaka Khan, etc.

Not a film but the original TV series of Twin Peaks. I have the CD. Brilliant!

MothralovesGojira · 12/11/2023 20:05

I love the soundtrack for David Lynch's Dune too which was (amazingly) written and performed by Toto.
I recently listened to some 80's soundtracks when I fell down a Spotify rabbit hole while making a new soundtrack playlist.
I spent a lovely afternoon reliving the brilliance and beauty of Labyrinth, Legend (the Tom Cruise one), The Mosquito Coast and 1984 - the Eurythmics one that didn't get used.

Purplecatshopaholic · 12/11/2023 20:21

Some crackers here. I just watched The Killer (new David Fincher). Mediocre film, but great soundtrack from The Smiths

Ooh yes and Near Dark soundtrack also Tangerine Dream

I'm pretty sure I have that on vinyl - I can picture the sleeve - but my vinyl is in boxes in the garage ATM - I bought so many albums by the Tangs - it got ridiculous!

Another great synth soundtrack (used at the birth of my first) is:-
