Which films have stunning soundtracks

I was catching up on The Hunger Games this weekend (new film next week!) but as I was also crocheting (gotta keep the hands busy!) wasn’t watching but just listening with my headphones and glancing at it now and then. I had always known that HG was visually stunning but I was really amazed that it also has an amazing soundtrack. Not necessarily songs but lots of unique HG sounds- the sound of the knives for example or the tracker jacks, the host etc which make it absolutely unique to HG. Similarly the James Bond music is so uniquely JB that you can identify it in milliseconds.

Which other films have soundtracks that are as strong or stronger than the visuals?

It's an old one but The Sting.

I would agree with Paris, Texas. I also find when Marc Shaiman is involved, the soundtrack is decent.

Disorganisedmess2023 · 12/11/2023 11:43

Lord of the rings

A Star is born, both films.

It's an old one but The Sting.

This made me think of another old one- The Hunger with David Bowie and Catherine DeNeuve.

Craig Armstrong had done lots of scores but also albums of his own. Worth a listen.

@Inextremis So it is! It's mixed in with Enya on my iTunes playlist - I've been giving Enya all the credit. Such a relaxing tune!

Love love love Local Hero!

Also Into The Wild; Eddie Vedder did all the music/songs for it, utterly beautiful.

I came on to say Into the Wild - Love Eddie Vedder, what a voice!

flairyfairy · 12/11/2023 11:46

Out Of Africa, just fabulous.

SerafinasGoose · 12/11/2023 11:46

Totally agree about the wonderful Lisa Gerrard - 'Dead Can Dance' have been a favourite of mine since back in my Goth days. And yes to Hans Zimmer.

Another great one is Thomas Newman, whose soundtrack to American Beauty in particular is so haunting and beautiful. And whilst it's not a film but a series, Lorne Balfe's soundtrack to the HBO His Dark Materials trilogy - in particular the opening credits - is simply stunning.

Got to love LOTR's too.

JustCheckingforMe · 12/11/2023 11:47

I was going to say The Mission. I also like the music on Crocodile Dundee. Ghost.

Some of my favourites are: Australia, Interstellar, Chloe, Never Let Me Go, Cracks, and absolutely anything scored by Thomas Newman! The Hunger Ganes scores are my favourites, too.
