Which films have stunning soundtracks

I was catching up on The Hunger Games this weekend (new film next week!) but as I was also crocheting (gotta keep the hands busy!) wasn’t watching but just listening with my headphones and glancing at it now and then. I had always known that HG was visually stunning but I was really amazed that it also has an amazing soundtrack. Not necessarily songs but lots of unique HG sounds- the sound of the knives for example or the tracker jacks, the host etc which make it absolutely unique to HG. Similarly the James Bond music is so uniquely JB that you can identify it in milliseconds.

Which other films have soundtracks that are as strong or stronger than the visuals?

Joe Hitachi I saw him conducting a full orchestra in September. I was in tears and I didn't even know all the films he was on about.

My neighbour Tororo
And kikis delivery service were my favourite.

Dd says princess Mononoka

I also agree re Hans Zimmer

Blade runner, vangelis. Assault on precinct 13 has a great soundtrack.

Clint Mansel, poppies say grr

Lion King (1994)

Not necessarily the songs but the scored during the powerful moments give me goosebumps every time.

Out Of Africa, just fabulous.

I came on to say this. The music always makes me cry.
Oh to be in a plane with Robert Redford flying over the planes of Africa.

Greybeardy · 12/11/2023 13:22

Master & Commander
Out of Africa
Gladiator
Braveheart/titanic
Dunkirk
Christopher Tin’s video game scores (Baba Yetu, Sogno di volare, etc)

shockeditellyou · 12/11/2023 13:23

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.

Great thread!

Seconding/thirding Bladerunner, Suspiria, Ennio Morricone. Michael Nyman, Tarantino soundtracks all classics.

I loved the new Dune soundtrack.

I'd add John Carpenter films - heavy synth and so atmospheric.

Also the Phillip Glass score to the 1990s Candyman is gorgeous.

For soundtrack rather than original score, Grosse Pointe Blank, Shallow Grave,

DreamingInPhosphorescence · 12/11/2023 13:24

Anything by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross

stayathomer · 12/11/2023 13:28

Guardians of the galaxy 2 soundtrack-listened to it on the google home thingy one day and was blown away (lake shore drive and the chain are standouts!)

Niassa · 12/11/2023 13:31

Last Christmas :)

Rookie93 · 12/11/2023 13:31

The English Patient - sections of the score move me to tears, so don't play it too often.

Shakesapear · 12/11/2023 13:32

The Beach (crap film but great soundtrack)
Romeo and Juliet
Clueless
Forest Gump

Ddcg12 · 12/11/2023 13:33

Trainspotting

KatBurglar · 12/11/2023 13:34

Christopher Tin’s video game scores (Baba Yetu, Sogno di volare, etc)

Baba Yetu is my all time favourite, it's magnificent. Great call, @Greybeardy !

Game soundtracks/scores can be incredible. DS1 is playing Witcher 3 and the music I can hear from the nextr room is so atmospheric.

Sholkedabemus · 12/11/2023 13:36

The Graduate and The Good the Bad and the Ugly.

JadeSeahorse · 12/11/2023 13:36

Lovely to see so many fans of the late, very great John Barry.

Many pp's have already mentioned a few including:

Dances with Wolves
Somewhere in Time
Out of Africa

Can I also add - Chaplin

All of the above move me to tears.

Unbelievably talented Brit who showed Hollywood how it should be done.👍

stickygotstuck · 12/11/2023 13:40

1492, Vangelis

FingerLickingGod · 12/11/2023 13:40

JadeSeahorse · 12/11/2023 13:40

Plus (pressed "Send" too soon 🙄)

The Bond Theme
Zulu soundtrack
Born Free
Enigma
Indecent proposal
Midnight cowboy

And many, many more!

mentalblank · 12/11/2023 13:41

Joining the many others who mentioned anything by Clint Mansell - I'd particularly suggest The Fountain, Moon and Requiem for a Dream.

Yes I just came on to say this too, it's sublime and definitely 'makes' the film.

stickygotstuck · 12/11/2023 13:43

Ulyses' Gaze, Eleni Kairaindrou.

She is not that well known and does not get enough credit, but she's writes great music.

MobHistory · 12/11/2023 13:45

Jackie Brown.

It's one of my favourite films.
