Which films have stunning soundtracks

I was catching up on The Hunger Games this weekend (new film next week!) but as I was also crocheting (gotta keep the hands busy!) wasn’t watching but just listening with my headphones and glancing at it now and then. I had always known that HG was visually stunning but I was really amazed that it also has an amazing soundtrack. Not necessarily songs but lots of unique HG sounds- the sound of the knives for example or the tracker jacks, the host etc which make it absolutely unique to HG. Similarly the James Bond music is so uniquely JB that you can identify it in milliseconds.

Which other films have soundtracks that are as strong or stronger than the visuals?

Great thread.

A mention for the soundtrack of The Big Easy - to me the soundtrack itself is as carefully put together as a proper album, full of Louisiana heat. And although it's hard to believe now, back then hearing Dennis Quaid sing was v hot 🔥

Another vote for Michael Nyman. His score for Prospero's Books is fantastic, which stands out because the film is a load of old toss, it has a total of a few seconds of genius from John Gielgud and the rest is a mess IMO. But fab music.

Grease 2. So moving when Michelle Pfeiffer imagines a ghostly Michael Carrington in silver leather (complete with helmet) while "turn back the hands of time" plays in all its heartbreaking glory.

😂

On a different slant perhaps - if you like a selection of great songs I love the soundtracks to a not well known film "Heavy" (ft.Liv Tyler and Debbie Harry) and "Empire Records"

Tangerine Dreams soundtrack to The Sorcerer is also pretty good listened to loud and in the dark.

I'll probably think of some more in a minute.

A film I think in the 1980s called Restless Natives, soundtrack by Big Country, a band I have loved ever since. Stuart Adamson died very young, RIP.

Don't know if anyone already said this but Adam Taylor for The Hansdmaids Tale especially 'He's Alive' and 'Mom's Got Work'. Champions by Carl Davis and of course Jeff Wayne's score for War of the World's is sensational.

"Lux aeterna" from "Requiem for a Dream"... it's a bit weird to think Clint Mansell was the lead singer from Pop Will Eat Itself!

So many great ones on here. Remember when buying the soundtrack of films was a thing? I had loads.

Oh yes! Memories... especially the various artists soundtrack album for "The Crow" 🖤

Craig Armstrong had done lots of scores but also albums of his own. Worth a listen.

Love Actually soundtrack (the music by Craig Armstrong rather than the "songs") is still my favourite music of all time, apart from Vivaldi four seasons. I walked down the aisle to Glasgow Love Theme and it can still make the hairs on the back of my neck stand up when I listen to it some 13 years later.
