sister furious at me and DD over DD's prank

I feel mortified and I don't know what to do or tell DSIS to try and make things better between us.

My DSIS' son is 18 years old and has recently started taking driving lessons. He's got a 10-year-old little sister.

My DD is also 18 years old and very close to DNephew.

My nephew has recently entered an online "raffle" type of competition in the hope of winning a car.

Now, here's the problem. My DD thought it would be funny to pull a prank on her cousin and offer her 10 year old cousin to join along.
From my understanding, they sent a text message from a what seems to be a fake number generated by an online app. The text message was sent to my nephew and congratulated him for winning the car and asked him to come get it from the raffle company's office as soon as possible.
It was only once they were about to go in the car that DD and my niece told them all about the joke.

My DSIS and BIL are now furious at their daughter, my daughter and myself.

When did you first get wind of this prank?

When did you first get wind of this prank?

When DSIS told me what had happened

Bloody hell, that's cruel. I'd be furious too.

Babyroobs · 29/09/2023 14:53

Blimey that's pretty mean as far as practical jokes go.

DonaNobisPacem · 29/09/2023 14:54

Yeah that’s not very funny. She should apologise. Once she’s done so, is hope they could put it behind them as it’s also not the worst thing anyone has ever done.

Hottytotty · 29/09/2023 14:54

I hate these sort of “pranks” - they are just cruel IMO.
You tell your sister that you’re furious with your DS and that you knew nothing about it.
Unless you were in on it??

Sorry your DD

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 29/09/2023 14:55

God that is a cruel joke.

LeafLife · 29/09/2023 14:55

It’s really cruel.
Could you offer to pay for his driving test or something. Like a good will gesture sort of thing?

WimpoleHat · 29/09/2023 14:55

That was very unkind of your DD and not funny at all. But if you explain to her why that is so and she apologises to your nephew, hopefully that can be the end of it.

YourNameGoesHere · 29/09/2023 14:55

Gosh I'm not surprised they are cross with you all, it's not funny and really quite an unkind thing to do. Poor lad.

hideundermyduvet2023 · 29/09/2023 14:55

Pranks are never funny tbh

SammyScrounge · 29/09/2023 14:56

Unforgiveable.

Lovingitallnow · 29/09/2023 14:56

Your best bet is to get furious and join them in their fury. I'd read Dd the riot act and also make clear to her she's put her relationship with her cousin on the line for the sake of a laugh.

AnneLovesGilbert · 29/09/2023 14:56

Practical jokes are mean and horrible. She’s right to be livid with your daughter and her own but taking it out on you isn’t helping anyone. Poor lad.

NoSquirrels · 29/09/2023 14:56

Why are they furious with you though, OP? Did you try to defend DD?

FortofPud · 29/09/2023 14:58

What's the actual reason they are so cross? Was their son very upset and therfore went to defend him, or are they just angry on his behalf? Is there more backstory like they decided not to buy a particular car becsuse he'd won and now no longer available. Id be annoyed if that happened. I'm not a fan of pranks unless both parties like to prank each other, we're your DD and DN generally like that or was this out of the blue?

She shouldn't pay,I'd make the daughter pay for the test.

namechangedfri29 · 29/09/2023 14:59

Thank you for all your replies.

I agree it was a horrible prank.

I'm not sure why DSIS is so cross with me. As far as I'm concerned, she is aware I had no idea about the prank.

I think maybe she thinks I should have been tougher with my daughter when I found out. I'm not sure.

What sort of halfwit would think this was funny? Shame on your dd, op.

Nagado · 29/09/2023 14:59

It’s a really mean thing to do to someone and I understand why they’re cross with your DD and your DN, but why are they upset with you? Did you laugh? Or try and defend your DD?

Sirzy · 29/09/2023 15:00

Your daughter owes him a massive apology, that was a horrible thing to do.

did you try to defend her? Is that why your sister is annoyed with you?

YourNameGoesHere · 29/09/2023 15:00

Well what did you do when you found out how horrible she'd been to her cousin?

DontMakeMeShushYou · 29/09/2023 15:01

Your DD needs to give your nephew a whopping great contribution towards a new car now. What a horrid thing to do.
