sister furious at me and DD over DD's prank

I feel mortified and I don't know what to do or tell DSIS to try and make things better between us.

My DSIS' son is 18 years old and has recently started taking driving lessons. He's got a 10-year-old little sister.

My DD is also 18 years old and very close to DNephew.

My nephew has recently entered an online "raffle" type of competition in the hope of winning a car.

Now, here's the problem. My DD thought it would be funny to pull a prank on her cousin and offer her 10 year old cousin to join along.
From my understanding, they sent a text message from a what seems to be a fake number generated by an online app. The text message was sent to my nephew and congratulated him for winning the car and asked him to come get it from the raffle company's office as soon as possible.
It was only once they were about to go in the car that DD and my niece told them all about the joke.

My DSIS and BIL are now furious at their daughter, my daughter and myself.

That is not a funny prank. That’s just cruel

What's the actual reason they are so cross? Was their son very upset and therfore went to defend him, or are they just angry on his behalf? Is there more backstory like they decided not to buy a particular car becsuse he'd won and now no longer available. Id be annoyed if that happened. I'm not a fan of pranks unless both parties like to prank each other, we're your DD and DN generally like that or was this out of the blue?

DD and DN love pranking each other, sometimes it's light hearted, sometimes it makes me roll my eyes, sometimes they annoy each other, but I think this one was just too much for all of them.

He would have had a car from his parents after he had passed his driving test, but there was no immediate plan to buy one, no.

I'm not sure why DSIS is so cross with me.

How do you know she is, then?

Did she tell you she was furious with you? If so, what did you say back? Most people would say ‘Hang on, it wasn’t me that did the prank, DSis! I agree DD was out of order.’

Why is she furious with you?

For raising a child that would do something so horrible, and then downplaying it for calling it a prank, even now, as if it was some harmless fun, I imagine.

I'd be furious with OP too.

I think maybe she thinks I should have been tougher with my daughter when I found out. I'm not sure.

Well what did you do when you found out how horrible she'd been to her cousin?

I told her off badly. She regretted what she had done and was crying.

Thank you for all your replies.

I agree it was a horrible prank.

I'm not sure why DSIS is so cross with me. As far as I'm concerned, she is aware I had no idea about the prank.

What did you do as punishment for your dd?

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 29/09/2023 15:04

God, that was HORRIBLE of your DD. Is she usually that cruel? It’s just such an unpleasant thing to do to someone.

She's 18 and all you did was tell her off? Honestly I'm not surprised your sister is cross if you just told her off and she turned on the waterworks it's hardly a punishment.

Why was she crying? She evidently thought it was funny when she did it 🙄

MrsTerryPratchett · 29/09/2023 15:05

I wonder if people would be so keen on pranks and banter if we called it what it is, 'being horrible to someone then laughing about it'.

Is your DD behaving remorsefully, is he contrite? Or does she still really think she played a blinder?

They need to both stop and learn the lesson that this shit always ends in tears.

Frodofeeling · 29/09/2023 15:06

How did you respond when you found out and what has DD done by way of apology?

TruthSeeker2023 · 29/09/2023 15:06

I think the sister's family sound quite grabby and entitled if they think they deserve to win a car. Most people have to work hard to buy their cars.

Overthebow · 29/09/2023 15:03

What did you do as punishment for your dd?

Nothing by the sounds of it apart from a bit of a bollocking.

OP I think your DD needs to go to her cousin with a grovelling apology and some form of gesture with her own time/money.

She told that it was unacceptable, that it was of very poor taste and not funny at all, that her son is not a clown to be taken the mick out of, and left angry.

Sorry, this is a rough translation, it sounds odd in English

@TruthSeeker2023 grabby and entitled?! Wtf?! So no one should enter competitions? So weird.

So not the point... Confused

Sirzy · 29/09/2023 15:07

Dragging a 10 year old into it makes it even worse too

AFieldGuideToTrees · 29/09/2023 15:08

I hate practical jokes, they're horrible.

What a cruel thing to do.

Lagershandy · 29/09/2023 15:08

Pranks like this are hateful and not the least bit funny.

frenchnoodle · 29/09/2023 15:08

She is right, but that's not being angry at you, it's being angry about your child.

People enter competitions all the time to win stuff- what a strange thing to say.

Yes she’s right. It’s a really horrible thing to do.

Devilsmommy · 29/09/2023 15:09

What does everyone think op should do apart from a bollocking to her adult dd? Very interested to know🤔

Kaill · 29/09/2023 15:09

It was a mean prank but they’re teens. What is your sister expecting you and DD to do beyond an apology? They surely don’t expect money as compensation? I wouldn’t be paying for a test or towards a car, I think an apology is enough.

Furryrug · 29/09/2023 15:10

I think it's up to your daughter to make amends with everyone, get her to speak to your sister and explain.
