I work at a local primary school where I know a few parents who are dinner ladys i keep noticing they wear their uniform when dropping their own kids off and then they go home and then come back at lunchtime. Do you feel this is appropriate. Im not sure whether to mention it to our head

Why?

AlisonDonut · 26/09/2023 10:14

Honestly.

Go on, why wouldn't it be appropriate?

Why is this a problem?

Fleasbane · 26/09/2023 10:14

I posted too soon by accident ! I mean I don't understand why you would talk to the head. Is there a rule that they can't wear their uniform when they're not on duty?

vodkaredbullgirl · 26/09/2023 10:14

😕

Dillane · 26/09/2023 10:15

Get a grip OP 🙄

MrsPinkSky · 26/09/2023 10:15

It's a bit of an off thing to do if they're going home and coming back?

Do they actually work in the kitchen with the food and you're worried about contamination?

If not, what are you worried about exactly?

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 26/09/2023 10:15

Do you mean for hygiene reasons?

MrsPinkSky · 26/09/2023 10:15

*Odd thing to do

x2boys · 26/09/2023 10:15

What kind of uniform.do they wear? when I was a kid albeit along time ago.they used to.wear a blue and white gingham long sleeve overall type thing🤔

Wtfnowseptember · 26/09/2023 10:16

Do you mean kitchen staff? As their uniform should only be worn in the kitchen, but lunch time supervisors I can't think of a reason why not. I guess they don't go home between drop off and work.

Shinyandnew1 · 26/09/2023 10:18

Dinner lady as in they supervise the children whilst eating their lunch and wear a hi-viz tabard to the school run?

Or do you mean dinner lady as in they prepare the children’s food and are wearing their white overalls and hair net to the playground?

What exactly would you be complaining to the head about-specifically?

lilyblue5 · 26/09/2023 10:19

I think OP is meaning the kitchen staff dishing out the food, in which case YANBU. Grim.

Lifeinlists · 26/09/2023 10:19

If you mean kitchen overalls etc then, ideally, they should only wear them in the kitchen for hygiene / food safety reasons. Best practice is to keep them on the premises.

Best practice is often ignored.

Elmo230885 · 26/09/2023 10:20

As other posters have asked, I'd like to know what the issue is OP?

I'm pretty sure at my kids school they just have a tabbard over their clothes. I know one of the mums wears hers when dropping her kids off as she cares for her Mum and told me she was sick of forgetting it if she wasn't wearing it and having to make an unnecessary journey home.

If it's a full uniform maybe they don't see the point in messing up several sets of clothing for the day.

Lindy2 · 26/09/2023 10:21

I'm not sure what the problem is.

Do you think their uniform gets contaminated when they leave the kitchen? As long as they wash their hands then I'm sure it's OK. No one changes clothes to cook at home (or I'm sure at least most people don't - although this is mumsnet and I'll probably find out half the people on here have specific cooking clothes that they wash immediately after every use 🤣)

fishfingersandtoes · 26/09/2023 10:23

MN never fails to amaze me with what people get het up about.

Leggytigberk · 26/09/2023 10:24

Acorn Antiques, the cleaning lady.

Lifeinlists · 26/09/2023 10:29

Cooking for a couple of people in your own home and catering for hundreds of people in a commercial or school kitchen are very different things @Lindy2. There are fairly strict regulations around food hygiene as contamination can happen at many stages.

You may be OK with someone clearing out their cat litter tray in their catering work overalls for eg before embarking on a shift making school meals but I doubt an Environmental Health Inspector would be.

RudsyFarmer · 26/09/2023 10:31

The lunch time kitchen staff are often in the kitchen way before lunchtime. I would assume this is what is happening OP. Don’t embarrass yourself. None of these uniforms are flattering. I can’t see them wearing them for fun.

MrsPinkSky · 26/09/2023 10:32

I suspect this is one of those pointless threads where the OP won't come back and explain for hours, if at all.

ClusterFukt · 26/09/2023 10:37

There’s always one snakey fucker in the workplace running to the boss about the pettiest and most pointless shit. If you have headspace for this you’ve got too much time on your hands.

Fallingthroughclouds · 26/09/2023 10:38

Lots of cafe staff work in kitchens wearing their own clothes so being at home in the interim isn't a problem. Not sure if your clothes are covered with faeces which means you shouldn't be in the kitchen, but maybe don't assume this of others.

Is the reason, you shouldn't wearing clothes in the kitchen that you wear around the house (in that case we are all screwed) or are you affronted by tabbards. Or are you just unsufferably nosey and looking down on these women.

If you do speak to the head, please report back. I'm sure they'll all get a good laugh out of this in the staffroom.

Janieforever · 26/09/2023 10:45

Why would it be inappropriate? You need to explain. Do you feel the uniforms are some how sacred or something, that they can’t wear them in private time?
