He is seriously creepy! I never understand why people find him funny!

Iwasafool · 26/09/2023 22:53

topnoddy · 26/09/2023 21:06

Any Roald Darl books in your school per chance ?

He wasn't a jolly little bloke was he !

I've never read a David Walliams book as far as I know, I used to do reading with the local primary kids and I'm not absolutely sure one of them didn't one of his books. I don't like Roald Dahl books and I agree he wasn't very nice but I don't agree with banning books.

tolerable · 26/09/2023 22:54

hes always been repulsive

Giggorata · 26/09/2023 22:54

Just as an aside, I really enjoyed the autocorrect “lunch mob”.

theduchessofspork · 26/09/2023 22:55

Towdalinenow · 26/09/2023 20:37

For clarity DW filed the legal case.

Erm, should you be posting then?!

localnotail · 26/09/2023 22:58

I'm still unable to see why you would ban DW books but not Dahl or any other similar stuff. Dahl is not funny, not witty, just plain creepy and weird; all of the admiration for him is to do with him being a "national treasure" and all that.

None of these writes are Henry Miller so I will leave it up to my DC to decide what he likes! 😂

I have no issues with lunch mobs. I'm onboard with them to be fair

MsRosley · 26/09/2023 22:58

It's well known in publishing and writing circles that Walliams doesn't write his books. It's an open secret.

EasternStandard · 26/09/2023 22:58

We don’t have his books. Except one that was given to us

The Slightly annoying elephant one. It’s the worst and a direct rip off of Tiger who came to tea. But badly done.

Iwasafool · 26/09/2023 23:00

NaiceAm · 26/09/2023 22:40

Well his “worlds worst..” series of books are encouraging my dyslexic child to read so his books are very welcome in my house.

That's the thing with kids books, sometimes it is the crap that gets them going. I used to spend lots of time with kids who were struggling with reading, it wasn't just reading as we'd chat about books, I'd tell them about the books I read at their age. Recently my GS, he went to the school, told me that one of his friends had said his favourite thing at primary was reading with me. He was a little boy who struggled badly for several years at primary, he's now in sixth form doing well with decent GCSE results. Forgive me for being a little bit proud that reading crap with him was a step on the ladder for him.

If it gets them reading it is good enough.

Towdalinenow · 26/09/2023 23:00

@theduchessofspork eh? I’m just repeating what’s on the BBC website in the public domain. I’ve not said anything about what he’s suing for, as I don’t know. My views on his books and comedy career are not libellous- they’re just my own views.

Floogal · 26/09/2023 23:05

Must admit, looking back from now. The gerontophile sketches on little Britain are grotesque

Tinysoxxx · 26/09/2023 23:11

Just to counteract the Dahl hate: The Roald Dahl foundation does a lot for charity and funds epilepsy nurses. One of these has been a lifeline for our family. He lost one of his children to measles and was devastated so was very keen to support nurses and sick children. Some proceeds of the books still go to fund the nurses training.

Kastri · 26/09/2023 23:12

Same for me,makes me shudder.

Toomanycaketins · 26/09/2023 23:13

Lookatmytoes · 26/09/2023 21:35

I caught one as an audio book and was horrified by the racism in the portrayal of a black social worker. It was enough for me to leave them all well alone. He is a bad human.

This - including one pointless, perplexing and degrading description of this character crawling through barbed wire and losing all of her clothes. He seems to enjoy humiliating female characters.

DeeCee77 · 26/09/2023 23:14

If you wanted to cancel/ban anyone who said something considered offensive or distasteful we'd not be left with much.

No more Disney? No more JK Rowling? No more Wizard of Oz?, No more Jungle Book?, No more Great Gatsby? etc. etc....and "sex pest", so pretty much most major rock bands are out too?

Cancel the lot of em. Fawlty Towers with the Major...definitely no more. Father Ted with his vulgar Chinaman impression...get that trash off my TV. In fact ban just about any TV made before the last five years.

The left (which I consider myself part of) is being decimated because of cancel culture. This thread is a car crash.

Puritanical lynch mob is an apt description. One user has Noddy in their name...Enid Blyton (i'd make an exception for her being banned what with her work being crap)

A family member has worked in an environment which brought him into close proximity with DW. He was an absolute arsehole.

We all have family members who are absolute arseholes, try not to worry about it…

Always soooo helpful 😴 to hear from all those relatives whose workmates, brother’s dog walker’s auntie, passed ‘insert name of celeb’ leaving Greggs once and it was super creepy the way they held their steak bake.

rainydogday · 26/09/2023 23:15

I got rid of all his books after I saw the clip of him wrestling with that poor teenage lad on stage trying to pull his pants down Angry

jolaylasofia · 26/09/2023 23:15

this

MrsJamin · 26/09/2023 23:15

The only thing David Walliams got right was his "I'm a lady" sketches. I thought his children's books were fun but then you realise how it depends on class and race stereotypes, they are awful and i only realised too late after my boys read them all! I think it was the World's Worst Parents that broke me, it is an outrageous book. And yes he totally gives out dickhead vibes.

Twonewcats · 26/09/2023 23:17

Is it just me who thinks this is a smokescreen??
The timing seems highly convenient after he was trending last week, re rumours about to come out about him.
He'll be the next "see? Theyre just out to get me" celebrity alongside RB

RudsyFarmer · 26/09/2023 23:17

I don’t mind Worst Pets and Worst Children but some of the others are absolute drivel. I’ve refused to read them to my eldest.

BIossomtoes · 26/09/2023 23:19

I’m with you @DeeCee77.

Danielle9891 · 26/09/2023 23:19

I've heard rumours about him as well. And Keith Lemon.

DeeCee77 · 26/09/2023 23:19

Oh wow..she really was banned...

"Blyton's work became increasingly controversial among literary critics, teachers, and parents beginning in the 1950s due to the alleged unchallenging nature of her writing and her themes, particularly in the Noddy series. Some libraries and schools banned her works, and from the 1930s until the 1950s, the BBC refused to broadcast her stories because of their perceived lack of literary merit. Her books have been criticised as elitist, sexist, racist, xenophobic, and at odds with the more progressive environment that was emerging in post-World War II Britain, but they have continued to be bestsellers since her death in 1968."

Anyone who read her work needs their head examined.
