I was in WH Smith’s today looking at books for my DD’s birthday, it drove me mad how much of their shelf space was given over to so called ‘celebrity authors’- David Walliams being one of them. Have never understood who he appeals to at all, he isn’t funny and is so creepy. Ugh.

If you wanted to cancel/ban anyone who said something considered offensive or distasteful we'd not be left with much.

No more Disney? No more JK Rowling? No more Wizard of Oz?, No more Jungle Book?, No more Great Gatsby? etc. etc....and "sex pest", so pretty much most major rock bands are out too?

Cancel the lot of em. Fawlty Towers with the Major...definitely no more. Father Ted with his vulgar Chinaman impression...get that trash off my TV. In fact ban just about any TV made before the last five years.

The left (which I consider myself part of) is being decimated because of cancel culture. This thread is a car crash.

Puritanical lynch mob is an apt description. One user has Noddy in their name...Enid Blyton (i'd make an exception for her being banned what with her work being crap)

And yet I was a voracious reader as a child because of Enid Blyton. I read virtually everything of hers then worked my way round every classic children's book (E Nesbit, Noel Streatfeild, PL Travers etc) that I could get my hands on and then just anything and everything, Virtually a book a day.
All started by Enid Blyton.

Most people on this thread, including me, have said his books are banned from their houses... no one has said his booked shouldn't be published or anyone else isn't free to buy them. Thats my choice for my house and kids not cancel culture.

LaffTaff · 26/09/2023 23:25

I read somewhere that they'd based many (most actually, IIRC) of the Little Britain characters (Vicky Pollard, Maggie Blackamoor, Marjorie Dawes, Bubbles DeVere, Linda Flint, Anne et al) on mumsnetters.

I can't remember where I read that - probably the Guardian or the Independent.

Lookatmytoes · 26/09/2023 23:29

It isn’t cancel culture to object to racist misogynistic writing produced by a millionaire celebrity. That the writer is a misogynist whose belittling of lower class women, breastfeeding women and the disabled produced some of his biggest laughs isn’t a shock.

It is interesting though how illiberal much of the left has proven to be - and disappointing.

stealtheatingtunnocks · 26/09/2023 23:30

I met him through work a few times. Could tell from the far end of the corridor that he was an insufferable prick.

he was exactly as you’d expect.

PL Travers..she was a cold hearted wench.

Instant ban for Poppins.

ILikeDungs · 26/09/2023 23:33

It infuriated me that his books took up an entire shelf in my local bookshop, instead of books by a real children's book author.

He is a creep and I cringe that his books are there (for why??) instead of quality writers. Gillian Phillips gets cancelled, he gets shelf space. Go figure.

"Bitty"

<boark>

PTSDBarbiegirl · 26/09/2023 23:34

Don't like his demeanor, he comes across as a false, angry woman hating prick. Just a pallid skinned, cold sweating drag act. His books are misogynistic shit. Fuck these men that know where all the bodies are, he's not alone though.

DeeCee77 · 26/09/2023 23:35

L Frank Baum, Wizard of Oz

"The Whites, by the law of conquest, by a justice of civilization, are masters of the American continent, and the best safety of the frontier settlements will be secured by the total annihilation of the few remaining Indians. Why not annihilation? Their glory has fled, their spirit broken, their manhood effaced; better that they die than live the miserable wretches that they are."

Following the December 29, 1890, Wouned Knee massacre of Native men, women and children;

"The Pioneer has before declared that our only safety depends upon the total extermination [sic] of the Indians. Having wronged them for centuries we had better, in order to protect our civilization, follow it up by one more wrong and wipe these untamed and untamable creatures from the face of the earth."

Well no more Ruby Slippers at Christmas for me....oh and A Christmas Carol, bin that off too.

Reigateforever · 26/09/2023 23:36

He makes my skin creep, I don’t feel confortable watching anything he’s in.

SureWhyNotThen · 26/09/2023 23:45

I didn't like much of it at the time but when you look back there were a lot of shows that were just purposely offensive just for the sake of it. Like gutter TV programs.

Underneath it all they are all one trick ponies, it's the same rehashed material done in different ways further pushing how offensive they can be. Little Britain was like that, especially.

Why David Walliams got propelled into even more fame is beyond me, I don't see the appeal. All he does is play the same creep in the exact same way as always... it's like he's constantly performing that character.

Me too. I don't think I was a discerning reader as a child but I got through stacks of books

Attack is the best form of defence?

Was listening to a podcast about Oscar Wilde and his pattern of behaviour was exactly the same; actually started his own downfall by suing for libel, then ignored sensible advise to take a long holiday in France.

Well, he got to France eventually!

On another note, lunch mob is something I can work with.

Underminer · 27/09/2023 00:24

DW gives me the creeps.

I miss Sean Lock and want to go join a Lunch Mob of Sean Lock fans as we put the special slippers on and reminisce.

Fanlover1122 · 27/09/2023 00:43

I bet!!! He is also also so so so rude - I have seen him out and about in London, and he is terribly unpleasant. I bumped into him by mistake, as my dog was trailing me into a shop (yes, my bad) but as I was pulling her back I didn’t notice him standing in front of it, I apologised straight away....I didn’t even click it was him until my friend that was with me pointed it out. Probably thought I did it on purpose!

oh here we go.

Walliams has sold, and will no doubt continue to sell, many millions of books. His books are promoted and sold in more locations than any other children's author. Parents choosing not to have his books in their house doesn't mean he's being 'cancelled' any more than them choosing one brand of breakfast cereal means all the other breakfast cereals are being cancelled.

people are allowed pick and choose what 'artists' they give their money to. One person might have decided long ago that even though they love his films they don't want to pay for anything that puts money in Mel Gibson's pocket. Other people don't mind that he's violent and racist and are happy to keep watching his films. Because he's still making films, as he hasn't been cancelled.

All the tantrum throwing people like you do about supposed cancel culture and when it comes down to it...no one is actually being cancelled.

Me too, NannyOgg. I still remember reading the 'X of Adventure ' books at.night with a torch under the blankets. 'Famous Five' as well.
Blyton got me reading young and to this day I get that same old thrill of anticipation when I have a new book to read. Thanks to Enid.

Why are people banning his book from their house? Genuine question. Plenty of kids books are rubbish quality so what is it specifically about these - the poor stories or is it a dislike of the author?

We have a stack of them bought cheap from charity shops but we’ve not read them yet, so maybe that’s why there is always loads of them in charity shops!

The disturbing nature of his writing. It's sick.

Pinkfluff76 · 27/09/2023 02:25

Haven’t heard any rumours, but can I just say holy fuck I’m so relieved that so many of you think his books are so shit. I thought it was just me! So many of my daughters friends were reading them and I was like hell no! Every time I saw one at the library I felt the rage that just because he’s famous he gets to publish (rubbish) and make even more money.

Cyclebabble · 27/09/2023 02:47

He said some poor things about BGT contestants. Little Britain was quite funny in parts, but has dated quickly. Generally he is quite a talented guy. Books are for me reasonable. Kids loved them. have not seen anything to give me any impression he is a wrong on. On his sexuality (mentioned by a few here), he has been clear in his book Camp David that he is bisexual- so a bit camp, on occasion a bit gay but also for the most part straight.
