I guess he could be trying to shut down a story/ allegation coming to light?

I think we’re seeing the me too movement having an impact with a string of male celebs recently… I’m not saying DW will be one of them, because we don’t know the story yet BUT rich people have less power to use NDAs/ injunctions to bury stories and allegations… All thanks to brave women who stood up while facing legal threats

You mean Dahl.

Read the books again. Matilda is about the joy of love and of reading. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory rewards honesty. Danny the Champion of the World is about a fantastic non-stereotypical father-son relationship. George’s Marvellous Medicine is very funny (especially if you’re about 8) and no worse than any of the Rumpelstiltskin-type fairy stories. Etc.

Children deserve fun from some of their books, as do adults!

Doesn't bother you that the author was an anti-Semitic then ?

I hated Little Britain at the time, I was shocked back then how discriminatory and disgusting it was. Now everyone can see it with hindsight. Same goes for Bo Selecta etc. I’m glad people are finally seeing the light and the ugly truth about parts of the entertainment industry is being revealed.

If you think that then the show went right over your head. It was mocking "Little Britain" and people's appalling attitudes.

There's a good story about him in last week's Popbitch. He's now stuck in my mind as a pink minstrel.

The description as a low rent Larry Grayson made me laugh out loud!

NOTANUM · 26/09/2023 22:11

Also never liked Leigh Francis, hate to say it but find him a bit repulsive and not at all funny, seems like he thinks being repulsive is funny,
Funny you mentioned Leigh Francis. Years ago I remember listening to him as part of a group on White Wine Question Time. I noted that he didn’t get out of Keith Lemon persona the whole time, meaning it was all about him in the group, and seemed quite cranky about them pushing him as Leigh rather than Keith. They were all mates and seemed to like his wife in particular but he didn’t come across as that likeable.

100%.

The genius of Dahl is his books have protagonists you root for (Charlie, Matilda, James, George, Sophie, Danny, Mr Fox etc.) by having cruel/spoilt/horrible villainous characters.

Walliams is to Dahl what Oasis were to The Beatles.

Why are people banning his book from their house? Genuine question. Plenty of kids books are rubbish quality so what is it specifically about these - the poor stories or is it a dislike of the author?

We have a stack of them bought cheap from charity shops but we’ve not read them yet, so maybe that’s why there is always loads of them in charity shops!

Cos they're shit

He gives me the shivers, can not abide him. Whatever eventually comes out about him will rival JS.

Oh for gods sake, that's ridiculous
Bloody hell, lunch mob mentality on here

Sux2buthen · 26/09/2023 22:15

Or even lynch

Wherearemymarbles · 26/09/2023 22:22

rumour is there is a super injunction to stop the whatever story coming out
the person who told me this also told me about Huw a a while before he was in the frame

User3735 · 26/09/2023 22:25

I bet this post will be pulled, any negative online post about him and his shit, racist, misogynistic books mysteriously disappears.

Men Only: Inside the charity fundraiser where hostesses are put on show | Financial Times (ft.com)
The investigative reporting by Madison Marriage was good enough to see the Presidents Club charity disband the following week. Walliams did not comment for the aforesaid article but later tweeted that he had presented only and left at 11.30pm so not at the after party. He will, however, presumably have been part of the misogynist banter if he was actually conducting the auction, as it included cosmetic surgery for your wife.
The event's brochure included a full-page warning that harassment would not be tolerated, and that the Presidents Club would not be liable for it if it did happen. That this was in the literature says it all quite frankly.

Yeap. Ours too. It's like a weird British cult thing that we're all supposed to love his books. Theyre utter crap and so inappropriate for the target audience. It's a weird PR campaign gone mad.
And yes his smug, sly grin, looks like it holds lots of secrets.

yes, the stranglehold he has on children's publishing in the UK is bonkers. Such an oddly inappropriate person to have been (unofficially) crowned the king of kids' books.

localnotail · 26/09/2023 22:35

He sure is creepy but I did find Little Britain funny, sorry! I did see that it was very politically incorrect and probably offensive but I though it was "ironic", a bit like Gervais comedy. I have literally no interest in finding out which way he swings but he is so weird looking and his whole demeaner is somehow so repellent I always wondered what sort of person would willingly pair up with him.

Also, banning books, seriously? As someone said before, he is just a Dahl wannabe, same "dark" nasty shit but sort of diluted... we managed to read a couple of Walliams books with my DC but never finished any Dahl - too scary and weird. My DC cried and asked me to stop reading The Witches, said it was too scary.

Walliams' Mr Stink was sort of lovely in its own way, Gangster Granny was interesting, but the other couple of books we read were simply too boring and miserable. Walliams is not the only one who writes in this style though, check out Mr Gum books - its something else! Totally gross.

NaiceAm · 26/09/2023 22:40

Well his “worlds worst..” series of books are encouraging my dyslexic child to read so his books are very welcome in my house.

LizzieSiddal · 26/09/2023 22:43

I expect he knows things about other people on the show so will be hoping for an out of court settlement.

I fully expect other stuff to be leaked about him in 3.2.1.

BarqsHasBite · 26/09/2023 22:47

My friend used to work high up on a prime time chat show. She said he has a reputation for being a sex addict/into a lot of kinky stuff but as far as she was aware it was all consensual and above the age of consent.

Dahl himself made revisions to his books during his lifetime, for example in the 70s he made edits to subsequent editions of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory where he changed the appearance of the Oompa Loompas (they were originally black pygmies from Africa). His family have also made apologies for anti-Semitic remarks he made and... oh yeah, he wasn't rumoured to be a massive fucking sex pest, amongst other things.

I’m afraid Dahl was a massive sex pest - read Patricia Neal’s autobiography, he raped her while she was ill and in pain after a stroke. Also check out some of his ‘erotica’ if you want to see in his own words how much he despised women and enjoyed sadistic sexual violence.

bemorelemmy · 26/09/2023 22:51

totally agree with you @Sux2buthen puritanical lynch mob

A family member has worked in an environment which brought him into close proximity with DW. He was an absolute arsehole.

They're banned in my house because
a) I can't stand DW and dont want his stuff in my house.
b) I don't like the books they are full of creepy and distasteful characters with none of the wit of Roald Dahl books.
C) there are much better kids books out there
