And yet I was a voracious reader as a child because of Enid Blyton. I read virtually everything of hers then worked my way round every classic children's book (E Nesbit, Noel Streatfeild, PL Travers etc) that I could get my hands on and then just anything and everything, Virtually a book a day.
All started by Enid Blyton

Hear hear. Blyton was already on the shitlist in my later years of primary, around '65-66. Teachers never said outright what it was but the general tone was lack of challenge, limited language. I too read adult books and the children's classics at the same time as Blyton. I wonder if something of the same effect can be attached to the increase in reading due to the Harry Potter novels. However school librarians have assured me the effect has not lasted. Sad

There was a need to ban David Williams' books in my home as I refused to allow my son or his siblings to read books where any disability was being mocked, especially when a sufferer of that was emotionally distressed because of it.

Hopefully that helps you to see the need. My nine year old son had a severe stutter and within the first two chapters, iirc, Walliams was mocking the issue, which made my child cry. That should be sufficiently clear. He also has a the reprehensible habit of making fun of an disadvantages people may be hampered by, which makes him a very poor role model.

Feelingfree2023 · 27/09/2023 03:09

This was for localnotail.

VerasRaincoat · 27/09/2023 03:26

I worked at an event where Bill Bailey and David Walliams were present. Let’s just say one is a perfect gentleman that if anything nasty comes out about him I’ll eat my hat.

I’ve also met Lara Stone DW’s ex wife who is an utter angel. Cannot understand what she was doing with him but unsurprising that they are divorced.

Tighginn · 27/09/2023 03:45

Could never get my head around Caroline Aherne dating him.

TommyNever · 27/09/2023 04:49

Doesn't seem to be anything new about Walliams in this thread.

We've long known he's a deliberately crass comedian of markedly poor judgment, who also writes poor quality children's books that are unfortunately very popular.

That doesn't seem to put him in the Jimmy Saville class, as someone suggested.

As for Little Britain, like most people I enjoyed some of it at the time but wouldn't watch it again.

Loopylooni · 27/09/2023 05:24

@RoseGoldEagle i also hate all these celeb children's books, trying to get on the bandwagon! I deliberately don't buy them. I'm ex publishing myself so I know how hard it is to make any money unless you were JK Rowling. I always try and get books by non celebrities.

Worriedaboutpp · 27/09/2023 05:33

Ugh. I saw a "hide the sausage" clip with him in allegedly once with 3 teenage boys. It certainly looked like him and it gave me the creeps big-time. You never know these days with AI, but if it is him, it's extremely unsettling "humour".

Tinysoxxx · 26/09/2023 23:11

Just to counteract the Dahl hate: The Roald Dahl foundation does a lot for charity and funds epilepsy nurses. One of these has been a lifeline for our family. He lost one of his children to measles and was devastated so was very keen to support nurses and sick children. Some proceeds of the books still go to fund the nurses training.

I agree with this. Don't judge Dahl from a completely different time and from a different culture, with our values today. He did so much for the medical profession (even invented a valve to treat hydrocephalus) and ultimately he also formed the stroke association. An absolutely astounding person.

It is him. It was part of the show Matt Lucas has discussed how sometimes he got punched/hit as a result. He also did this 'skit' to Mark Ronson. It's been covered in the press before. How he's been able to continue is anyone's guess.

PodgePie · 27/09/2023 06:09

Almost for certain they are. There aren’t many authors who can churn out books at the rate he does & as a pp says, they are inconsistently average/poor.

I worked in children’s publishing years ago & it was eye opening how many celebrity children’s books were ghost written (most of them) so I doubt anything’s changed. What’s depressing is that they get better MUCH marketing than the myriad of genuinely exceptional children’s books written by ‘non celebs’.

Maybe she knew him better than the strangers on Mumsnet

Have you seen the videos of him assaulting people for laughs as part of his show? It's repellent.
I have always been a loss at anyone finding him funny.

poppyseedy · 27/09/2023 06:24

I know for an absolute fact that some (not all) of his books are ghost written.

Sux2buthen · 27/09/2023 06:30

@GrammarTeacher oh no, I didn't realise he'd been arrested for assault after all of the evidence. My mistake

Newestname002 · 27/09/2023 06:33

I have always been slightly uneasy whenever I've seen him on TV, starting with Little Britain and onwards from there. Always felt the edge of something unpleasant that's never changed. 🌹

You don't think it's assault to pull someone's trousers down and expose them to an audience? Do you think only those who are arrested are guilty of an offence?
Or do you think he's ok because you used to laugh at his racist, homophobic, classist nonsense that passed for humour that wasn't 'alright' back then!

Paternosta · 27/09/2023 06:34

Those clips of him with teenage boys haunt me. DS is about that age and I imagine how he'd feel being sexually assaulted on stage while hundreds of people laugh and do nothing to help.
Walliams is literally trying to pull their pants down and they are fighting him off while people think it's part of the act. Awful

GoldersGal · 27/09/2023 06:37

There was a twitter thread years ago - some of the assistants at his publishing house alleged that he had been inviting young girls back to his dressing room after book signings. Publishers covered it up as he makes them a lot of money, I suppose.

Not a millennial by any stretch of the imagination. Cruelty and punching down (and racism etc) is not and was not funny. Black face was already seen as ridiculously offensive. It wasn't ironic.
If you want to see intelligent comedy designed to mock bigotry then you look at Al Murray or Alf Garnett. Although the people involved with Alf Garnett do know admit that actually it didn't work as a critique of people who thought that way. It was done to well and those people saw it as affirmation not criticism.
Regardless, Walliams is a highly unpleasant individual who has many people supporting him to protect his reputation.

Furryrug · 27/09/2023 06:51

Omg , those poor lads , another celebrity hiding in plain sight.
