@GrammarTeacher love Black Books))

IMHO Little Britain was funny as it was novel and unusual, it was offensive even then, but I thought it was clear it was doubling up on its offensiveness, like the whole point was that it was "ironic" and it was the characters that were offensive, not the creators.
Fast Show was great)) Aso liked Phoenix Nights.

GrammarTeacher · 27/09/2023 12:05

Urgh. Hadn't seen it all to be honest. Very disappointed. Thanks for the share.

Unless you’re an 8-10year old child, it actually doesn’t matter what you think of his books, or others. There’s actually something a bit off about an adult who criticises children’s choices of fiction instead of stories aimed at them, then makes snobby comments about other authors who successfully tap into a child’s imagination and let it run freely, as it should, before they’re old enough to realise what a miserable state most grown ups live in.
If ANY book is a gateway to lifelong enjoyment of reading, then that’s all that matters. Stop policing children’s choice of reading.

That’s ridiculous - don’t you believe that all kids are entitled to easily access a wide range of reading material, not the same substandard churned out stuff on repeat? I will take an interest in what my kids read, as a responsible parent. There’s a place for the wimpy kids of the world sure but it’s important that kids also read more widely. I can objectively say that Walliams books are poorly written in terms of sentence structures, adjectives and the strange themes.

squareyedannie · 27/09/2023 13:25

What I've learned from this thread is that his books are shite, he's a sleazy ball-bag and he called someone a c*&t.

NeedToThinkOfOne · 27/09/2023 13:38

@Moonwatcher1234 Yes, see my subsequent post. I think celeb authors have actually boosted the profile of children’s fiction. Having the ability to read is a great privilege, along with the free choice of books, which is not afforded to children across the world. As adults we shouldn’t be micro-managing what our dc read because it’s not something we politically or morally approve of for their reading time. More than that, there’s also a snobbery in general around books for children- which goes beyond what people think of DW as a person.

cittigirl · 26/09/2023 21:19

He's always given me the creeps. The only time I was ever so slightly endeared was when he swam for comic relief.

Jimmy Saville did lots for charity

ps I'm not accusing DW of abusing children. Don't like him at all, but not accusing him of that

WetWetBottomOnTheNightBus · 27/09/2023 14:57

@MuckyPlucky I definitely would not waste any food stuffs on Walliams, especially not naice ham 😋
I would however, be happy to see him disappear up his own backside like the weird willow the wisp he is.

@Moonwatcher1234 I agree. I would never encourage my children to read DW books, or RD for that matter. I have the same attitude to book as I do tv/films/YouTube- there’s a lot out there from brilliant to awful, and some of it is just repellent dross.

Did anyone mention his 18yr old girlfriend yet? He was 37 so not illegal but still utterly sleazy given that she had only just turned 18 when they started dating.

Creepy auld git

Ilovecashews · 27/09/2023 19:05

Funny you should say that. I live close to him and every time I see him at the park I really don’t like the feeling he gives me.

Maybe you should just be honest and tell him you don’t like the feeling he gives you, ask him to bring you a different one next time he’s in the park and you are staring at him, waiting for the feeling you see him at the park, where he’s presumably minding his own business and not bothering you.

Such a strange comment.

Fishesinthewaterfishesinthesea · 27/09/2023 20:56

@Ilovecashews What’s he doing at the park?

Loopylooni · 28/09/2023 02:31

So is he who the BBC will be talking about in Panorama?

Fishesinthewaterfishesinthesea · 28/09/2023 08:00

@Loopylooni When?

PearlClutzsche · 28/09/2023 08:21

There's a special Panorama programme, Monday 9pm... the subject of which has not been made public yet!

I think celeb authors have actually boosted the profile of children's fiction.

No they haven't. There's no evidence for this.

I can see you're a Walliams fan. No harm in that, but no need to pretend his books aren't shit.

BeverleyMacker · 29/09/2023 13:47

I think it's possible it could be about Jimmy Savile as the drama airs on 9th?

Loopylooni · 29/09/2023 14:30

@noteboko i worked in publishing for years and honestly decent, independent authors get hardly anything. Only JK Rowling made any decent money, or Julia Donaldson. Those books were always number one saleswise. My children were given DW books to read via school at 6 years old. I read with them and i thought the subject matter was quite cruel and i immediately fed back to the school who pulled the book from the reading for those groups. Some will love it but i think it makes children a bit exposed to cruelty eg calling others smelly or fat etc, which although i know is rife anyway, id like to at least try and keep it away for a bit. I now always try and buy non celeb books, plus i always cringe when i see yet another one coming up. JUST GO AWAY!

🙄 You can’t see anything. I’m a fan of anyone having the right to reply when MN randoms have decided ‘they’re creepy and they make me feel weird whenever I see them and my cousin Susan who once walked past them looking creepy in an airport, agrees with me’. I’m also a fan of children choosing which children’s books they’d like to read, regardless of whether their parents think the writing is shit…no harm in that.

Absolutely.
Hysterical mon mentality on here, if it's not dogs it's David Walliams

Or Christmas Eve boxes

HunterBellies · 30/09/2023 07:52

Hysterical?

What a sexist expression, there is no need.

Too many opinionated blokes on Mn recently changing the tone. It's off-putting.
