What is going to happen to all the litters of xl bully puppies?

So now that XL Bullys are going to be banned by the end of the year (fully in support of that) what is going to happen to all the puppies?

Currently on gumtree for my city alone there are about a dozen adverts for litters of this "breed" so across the country it must be hundreds.

I can see that the prices have already been massively reduced but who is going to buy one now knowing that it will have to be on lead, muzzled etc

What will these breeders do with all the unwanted puppies.

It occurred to me that if they release them into the wild then we could have packs of wild dangerous dogs roaming around...

Probably cull them.

wetotter · 15/09/2023 12:41

We'll have to wait to see what's in the actual law.

If it's an outright ban, with dogs PTS, then I expect they'll just be dumped or drowned or killed at home by some other means.

I doubt there are many responsible breeders out there who would take them to the vet to be humanely PTS (and irresponsible breeding is definitely a contributory factor to the whole sorry mess)

But if it remains legal to own, provided neutered and muzzled at all times outside the home, then perhaps the opposite will happen, as these will be the last generation legally bred and thus will have scarcity value.

PinkFootstool · 15/09/2023 12:42

Most of the ads on Gumtree are fake anyway. It'll be interesting to see what the organised crime groups will breed next to sell.... It's currently an adjunct to county lines / drug importation / sexual exploitation for several of them.

Illegal to own one or breed from one is the suggested ban wording I read...

Missingmyusername · 15/09/2023 12:46

Stop frothing for one. XL is not a breed for a start.

Has anyone actually read the article in full?

SunshineHello · 15/09/2023 12:46

They will all be neutered

They will have be muzzled and on a lead in public

They will be put down if they appear aggressive

Thats what they said on the radio this morning anyway

Yep this. As per the existing dangerous dogs act which is easily accessible for anyone to read.

The breed is being defined and then once done, banned, by year end.

Wanttobeok · 15/09/2023 12:55

Yes I know that is what's going to happen to the ones already owned but my question is regarding the litters that havent yet been sold. No chance these awful breeders are going to keep them all so they will have to be disposed of.

Oh and to the other pp who is frothing? I just asked a question

Exactly. If people are expecting all XL bully type looking dogs to be gone- they won’t be. Just like staff types. But froth away.

Wanttobeok · 15/09/2023 12:57

Again with the froth comment 🤔

Flamedmoth · 15/09/2023 12:58

They will be relabeled as something else...

An xl bully is a mix so people will just change the mix declared

Eg staff with canesorso
Bul dog staff mix.

Theres such a fine line that I wouldn't want to be the one saying who's an xl bully and who isn't!

BeeCucumber · 15/09/2023 12:59

I would like to ask the potential owners of these puppies why they would want a dog like this.

Missingmyusername · 15/09/2023 13:00

I just can’t stand the absolute delight taken in animals being destroyed. Animals humans created @Wanttobeok I’m sorry the word frothing upsets you lol.

Whatever happens no doubt we will create something else in due course, so try and control your excitement.

Rosamary · 15/09/2023 13:00

They should be handed in to the authorities to be PTS obviously. No brainer. Its not complicated.

I don't doubt there will be twats trying to pretend their massive bull headed dog isn't an XL bully but if it means less of these bastard things around, that's a positive 👍

Penis extension.

Zebedee55 · 15/09/2023 13:00

I'm not sure about how to impose a ban, but leash and muzzles, at all times, is good.👏

Missingmyusername · 15/09/2023 13:04

@Rosamary People don’t own these dogs because they love them. They’ll soon have a new “bastard” type breed that’s all. Most, probably aren’t even chipped. These people use them and abuse them, in dog fighting, drugs, to look hard.

This law will do sweet fanny adams in the long run. Other breeds have been banned- yet here we are yet again. 🙄

Rosamary · 15/09/2023 13:05

It is far better for the puppies to just be PTS now. Saves any future of them having to be muzzled in public etc. Most of the people that own these dogs give them a shit life anyway.

Anyone who is blubbing about putting innocent puppies to sleep need to pull themselves together and accept that a horrible thing needs to be done to counteract the stupid, horrible problem that humans have created. Animals don't suffer if they are humanely PTS but doing this now will reduce suffering of the dogs themselves, innocent humans and other animals in the future.

Caffeineislife · 15/09/2023 13:06

The responsible breeders will ensure they go to responsible owners who know the law and have experience with these kinds of dogs. They will stop breeding them after this litter of puppies and probably introduce a take back scheme for any of their puppies. The responsible owners will ensure the dog is kept within the confines of the law.

The irresponsible breeders will continue to breed and sell them. They will market them as something else (just look at how many suspiciously close to pit bull terriers there are about still). They will continue to be a status dog and as a banned dog the status will be elevated. Those who seek out a banned breed will not change their behavior and abide by the dangerous dog act as they frankly do not care.

IMO there needs to be much more owner education required before buying a dog. Look how many poorly socialised dogs are around. So many owners think it is cute and playful that their dog runs up to people and jumps on strangers. Too many owners who think it is acceptable to drag dogs around shops and cafes and allow them to stand/sit on tables and deficate all over the floor with no attempt to clean it up.

Calistano · 15/09/2023 13:11

I remember my friend at school in the late 80s had a puppy of a banned breed, afaicr it was put down. So I imagine they will be put to sleep.

parameciumparty · 15/09/2023 13:11

They'll be rebranded as adorable lil nanny dogs. "By 1 to luuk aftr yr kidz" 🙄

thats interesting… we didn’t have banned breeds in this county till the 90s

Calistano · 15/09/2023 13:13

It might have been early 90s, I want to say American pit bull, but could be wrong.
