What is going to happen to all the litters of xl bully puppies?

So now that XL Bullys are going to be banned by the end of the year (fully in support of that) what is going to happen to all the puppies?

Currently on gumtree for my city alone there are about a dozen adverts for litters of this "breed" so across the country it must be hundreds.

I can see that the prices have already been massively reduced but who is going to buy one now knowing that it will have to be on lead, muzzled etc

What will these breeders do with all the unwanted puppies.

It occurred to me that if they release them into the wild then we could have packs of wild dangerous dogs roaming around...

I think they will really struggle to identify a breed type that doesn't by default include staffs, American bull dogs, English bulldogs, cane corso and some of the mastiff breeds. Theres so many staffs in this country that it will be a fine line

It's a really tricky sliding scale. I've met dogs of lots of proven mixes of fairly popular breeds that would be identified as xl bullies by lots of the public

BotterMon · 15/09/2023 13:16

If idiots are going to buy a Bully they'll buy them anyway. Hopefully no more bitches will be put in pup now their market will shrink. Unfortunately we will see abandoned dogs as they are no longer money spinners for the oiks that breed/own them.
They need to offer a funded service for them to be PTS as abandoned bullies will be even more dangerous if they are scared and hungry.

BigBoysDontCry · 15/09/2023 13:21

In addition to the neutering, eads and muzzles, I understand that owners will require to be assessed and prove that they are responsible/can properly control the dog or it will be seized.

However, this all means nothing if existing owners are not inclined to follow the law.

After a few incidents in my local area, including children being chased in the play park, the advice from the dog warden was for parents/local residents to pay for the construction of a high fence around the play park to protect the children.

As for current puppies, no doubt they are already being marketed as something else and the breeders will be happy to persuade the morons who buy these dogs that all will be fine...

Calistano · 15/09/2023 13:27

No idea why people even want these breeds tbh, there are a lot of people who have been killed by their own or a close relatives dogs. I had a very stoic westie, just a grumpy little dude, who would put up with anything with a litte harrumph, but if you looked at his teeth were huge, could take a lump out of you if so inclined. Even lovely staffies I have met I was wary tbh, the shark like appearance is a bit off putting

Calistano · 15/09/2023 13:32

I went to my friends grans party once and their frigging staffy was obsessed with me, just on my feet the whole time. No clue what this meant but I was terrified, I just sat there like a dick for 2 hours. Not to mention the time a random rottweiler walked me home.

Icanseeahousementionedfrommywindow · 15/09/2023 13:35

Withe the pitbulls in the 90s they had to be neutered and then lived out their lives. A friend had a very gentle female one who lived a long time after they were banned.

SunshineHello · 15/09/2023 12:46

They will all be neutered

They will have be muzzled and on a lead in public

They will be put down if they appear aggressive

Thats what they said on the radio this morning anyway

This should be the law for all dogs regardless of breed (well apart from the neutering part obviously)

Wanttobeok · 15/09/2023 13:36

@Missingmyusername upset me? No not at all it's just the latest stupid mumsnet phrase. I'll just bracket it along with
"Wow. Just wow" and "A and E. Now"

Of course all breeds can be aggressive at times especially when they have owners who use the dogs as a penis extension. However it is the power and strength of these dogs, combined with bad breeding and ownership that causes the issues. Poor dogs really, the females being bred relentlessly for profit.

Blackbyrd · 15/09/2023 13:39

As a point of interest, all council housing tenancies and most other social housing tenancies have clauses where permission is to be sought to have a dog. If housing officers were to enact these properly than a fair few dangerous dog problems would be solved. Providers have always has the means to partially deal with this issue but as usual haven't bothered

LodiDodi · 15/09/2023 13:41

Hopefully neutered and muzzled outdoors so the only people they will kill will be their mentally defective owners

Cucucucu · 15/09/2023 13:42

The same that happened with pit bulls , they will be out to sleep . My friend worked at a shelter and when the mãe come out for the pit bulls , people just started abandoning them non stop , he was crying for months the amount of healthy sweet dogs they had to put to sleep . It was very very sad 😔

cheezncrackers · 15/09/2023 13:43

I just had a look on Pets4Homes to see how many of these dogs are for sale and OMG so many. 44 pages of American bully dogs/puppies!!!

There will be differences , there was a huge amount if pit bulls being out down back in the day . The main difference will probably be that these dogs won’t be insurable , so a walking liability to anyone that keeps them . It’s very sad

Edited

They'll be even more when the plebs realise they better 'get em sold' to the even bigger plebs that won't even realise they're banned for a year 😅

Missingmyusername · 15/09/2023 13:50

@Wanttobeok Damn I haven’t even seen it on here! It’s definitely irked you🤣but you file it wherever it makes you happy lol

WhisperingHi · 15/09/2023 13:53

How frustrating if they're allowed to just be muzzled and on a lead.

The type of idiots who have these dogs won't keep them muzzled when out. And obviously the average person won't want to confront them and, if the police responded to calls, they wouldn't arrive quick enough to stop the owner or the owner can just get a muzzle on the dog once they know the police are about.

As an animal loving vegetarian, I feel they should be PTS. That way, neighbours and concerned relatives can shop them in without having to prove anything other than existence.

If they don't PTS, there will be more deaths. And the dogs will just become an even bigger status symbol.

StorminanDcup · 15/09/2023 13:54

People should just not be allowed to breed dogs full stop. Except licensed breeders and even then it should be heavily moderated and limited.

People just breeding their dogs cos they fancy it and selling of puppies on Facebook and the like should be shot. Maybe bit extreme, they should be criminally charged and socially shunned at the minimum.

if you’ve ever bought a dog from an advert then shame on you. You’re part of the problem. Not limited to XL breeds of course

parameciumparty · 15/09/2023 13:11

They'll be rebranded as adorable lil nanny dogs. "By 1 to luuk aftr yr kidz" 🙄

Oh stop talking bollocks.

Staffies have always been known as nanny dogs, NOT XL bullies - if you had half a brain you would know they are not the same breed.

And as for your pathetic "By 1 to luuk aftr yr kidz" that says a lot more about the type of person you are, then the type of person who has a staffy as a family dog.

I am a 34 year old masters-degree educated female who owns a staffy, I assure you I do not sound or behave the way you clearly assume! My staffy is immaculately well trained, with a spot on recall, and recently had the vet burst an abscess in 2 places with no muzzle or restraint. He is also my 11 year old daughters best friend in the world.

There are good and bad dog owners. Don't ever assume certain breeds always have bad owners!

I just can’t stand the absolute delight taken in animals being destroyed. Animals humans created @Wanttobeok I’m sorry the word frothing upsets you lol.

Whatever happens no doubt we will create something else in due course, so try and control your excitement.

I see no delight, what do you mean?

The whole situation is a sorry mess, but the amount of dog attacks is clearly concerning.

CitizenofMoronia · 15/09/2023 14:05

"It occurred to me that if they release them into the wild then we could have packs of wild dangerous dogs roaming around.."

what planet are you on? release into the wild? they aren't exotic animals.

BarbaraofSeville · 15/09/2023 14:10

They should offer an amnesty for humane euthanisation, because otherwise there will be more horrific stories of animal cruelty to these thousands of now worthless animals, because of course, it's not their fault and they will suffer when the breeders take the matter into their own hands.

BigBoysDontCry · 15/09/2023 14:16

We already have 1 in our area (owner has 3) that is not allowed to be off leash and owner is supposed to only walk one at a time. Still walks all 3 at once, off leash, near the play park.

He's one of the breeders and in one small estate dog warden reckons there are currently around 30 of them.

misssunshine4040 · 15/09/2023 14:19

@Wanttobeok release them into the wild? You can't be serious to even think anyone would do this.?!

They will just rename the breed in the advert. No one will care , banned dogs still walk about freely and are bred here with very little problems.

I used to live in a street where 2 pitbulls lived, no one cared. One bit a woman on the leg when it was tied up outside a shop and the rspca visited. Nothing happened.

This new legislation will not be worth the paper it's written on. The government have to be seen to be doing something.

They can't even prove the breed exists yet as they are unrecognised and will need to spend ages defining exactly what is an xxl bully or "type"
