I was so blindly hoping there might be better news by now. This is awful.

YoSof · 21/06/2023 19:04

Thanks for the new thread, hoping for some positive news tonight. I will catch up when home

I feel like I knew deep down they were gone from the moment I heard they were missing, the ocean is not for us. But that didn’t stop me hoping and checking constantly. I’m so desperately sad for the way this has happened and knowing they’re probably still alive and trapped with no way to get out.

Thanks for the new thread. I have not managed to do much else it seems today. news on all the time.

I am not a praying sort but I am praying.

Emotionalsupportviper · 21/06/2023 19:07

Thank you for the thread. I would have done it but I'm incompetent.

Neverinamonthofsundays · 21/06/2023 19:08

It really looks bleak at this stage. Those poor men, their poor families.

I cannot stop thinking about these poor men.

Nor can I, it's on my mind and I feel a sense of sadness about it. They are basically in the middle of my worst nightmare, claustrophobia and water.

tortoishelll · 21/06/2023 19:09

So desperately sad. I feel a knot of guilt in my stomach for the fact my evening is going on as usual, meanwhile these poor lost souls are trapped. So, so sad. ☹️

Tipintorecession · 21/06/2023 19:09

Just awful, can't stop thinking about the father and son in particular 😢

TheTERFnextDoor · 21/06/2023 19:10

Am I right in thinking that the coast guard etc won't be sharing all the info they have at present? As in, if they find signs of life, they may hold off releasing it until friends and family are informed?

Boomboxinmyattic · 21/06/2023 19:10

Hopefully they're unconscious by now 😪.

That's what they have said, yes.

Someone was asking about bones and the titanic.

Scientific dives have found boots and shoes in configurations that indicate they were on a body when they settled, but no bones or clothes near them. Indicating that deep sea bacteria may be able to consume bones where shallower species cannot.

It is possible that some skeletal remains would be found in closed places eg the boiler room but the wreck is too fragile to explore those.

Additionally, one poster has said that a bacterial species has been consuming the metal of the hull and has been named after the titanic, as this species was not known before.

in short - the Mary rose is not a good comparator!

Tipintorecession · 21/06/2023 19:11

Channel 4 news outlining all the faults , safety clearly not a massive priority

SheilaFentiman · 21/06/2023 19:13

also, many who died were in the water at the time, having jumped from the ship or fallen from lifeboats - presumably not all of these bodies were found and they drifted before sinking. Unlike the Mary rose.

MrsTerryPratchett · 21/06/2023 19:13

Just on the point some people keep making about 'billionaires', I've been in a few emergency situations (nothing like this) and it's a great equaliser. No money, power, influence makes the slightest difference. Everyone in this kind of situation is just a small, powerless human. Regardless of who they were when they paid for the tickets, they are just the same as any of us would be right now.

The 19 yo's poor mum as well. Doesn't matter how much money you have, being scared for your children is universal.

TheShellBeach · 21/06/2023 19:14

I was wondering if future expeditions will be better planned.

gingerbiscuit34 · 21/06/2023 19:15

So horrific. Still not giving up hope yet :-(

I think future excursions should be banned for a long time. We clearly do not have the resources for rescues that are as effective as needed should something go wrong.

I was trying to say similar ('twas I who posted the link about the bacterium) but you've put it so much more eloquently!

With a bit of luck there won’t be any future expeditions for a very long time if ever.
Lessons need to be learned from this catastrophic event.

My thoughts are with the families as well as those poor men 🙏

whatsappdoc · 21/06/2023 19:19

Just seen the BBC map of the location of the rescue vessels and Polar Prince is still in position. Surely their own supplies must be running low?

ArcticBells · 21/06/2023 19:19

It's simply dreadful. I cannot understand it could have been allowed without adequate safety measures.

It's the High Seas. I am not sure who would tell them they can't do it.
