OP of the last thread has said she has to pop out so making this one as we’re almost full on the 2nd thread.

I cannot stop thinking about these poor men.

Peeps, I was just musing.

The BBC has been on the count down since yesterday and I have hated their adjusted tone of voices and slow speaks, since.

No, I will not start the thread. I might start one on the migrant boats though which will receive a handful of posts, one would imagine.

Please do the migrant thread. So many keep talking about this just start it.

pickledandpuzzled · 22/06/2023 13:01

The second biggest unanswered question about this whole thing, is why on earth the sub is grey white.

There's a good graphic about visibility in water- hot pink is good, apparently.

It should have been hot pink striped with fluorescent yellow or something. Give the spotters a fighting chance!

@Snowy2022 and no exclamation mark please

I agree. It's a small thing I know.

baroqueandblue · 22/06/2023 12:25

Point is, that's how many many people view refugees in boats, including international rescue efforts/resources and media. Let's not pretend this isn't a 'rich boys adventure tale' gone wrong. Let's at least be honest that the scale of the response reflects that 🤷‍♂️

It’s an unusual story involving probably the most infamous shipwreck in the world, a race against time, and a very primal fear. That, bluntly, generates a lot more interest than migrant boats. The Chilean miners, the kid that fell into a well, the children missing following a plane crash, the Tham Luang cave rescue, and the nutty putty cave incident also generated this level of interest, and afaik none of the individuals involved were wealthy.

the media focus on the stories they know will sell.

likelyhood · 22/06/2023 13:05

Here also, as father was VP of his dad (grand father)'s company, the 19 yo is really his heir- also another reason why they should not have gone together. It is the grandfather I feel sorry for!

I was thinking that too. It’s strange that the two heirs did such a risky thing together - rare in family-run businesses of this size. I just looked and the grandfather has a daughter who runs the Foundation and another son who looks after the business in Pakistan. Can’t imagine what everyone is going through, from a personal, emotional and business view.

AtomicBlondeRose · 22/06/2023 13:05

I assume the sub is so very small that even being painted the brightest of colours, it is to all intents and purposes still invisible in the sea.

phatt · 22/06/2023 13:05

Does anyone else cringe reading some of these comments? So many armchair experts saying what’s happened to them or what rescue should be doing.

tortoishelll · 22/06/2023 13:05

I've made a 4th thread - in the chat section.

What do you do to support the migrant crossings? What do you do day to day? You only seem to want to start a thread now THIS is being discussed. Did you care enough 3 days ago? A month ago? Hmmm.

Why would the Americans do that?

The airspace bit of that story is iffy as hell.

Fly UK to Canada and you'll find the Oceanic airspace is controlled by UK/Ireland ("Shanwick") out to 30 west then by the centre at Gander until landfall...there's no US involvement or US permission needed if you wanted to fly something from Channel Islands to St John's.

Snowy2022 · 22/06/2023 13:07

Asthebellcurves · 22/06/2023 12:49

British attempts to get Magellan there were blocked by US authorities who went so far as to refuse to sign authorisations to enter airspace.

Look, until yesterday morning (officially anyway), the official line was it could be on the surface or at the bottom and their investigations on both areas (up and under) where carried out.

Only AFTER the planes picked up the sound believed to be coming fro underneath, was the most efforts and assets focused on the depth of the ocean.

had they picked up sound believed to be from the surface, they would have summoned hundreds of planes to search for it and not ROV and vessels that go underneath.

At least that's how I understand it. the ONLY crucial point was Juliet (the vessel that scanned titanic sending back 3D images) wanting to be on standby at St John's airport/port while waiting for permission to goto the site which was refused. However, this could have been due to congestion in Canada or NY as I said earlier. Anyway, I am clear.

No, I've skipped irrelevant comments and carefully read all the ones with fascinating direct experience or related knowledge. Remarkable bunch of women on here.

Yes, I give free legal advice on a regular basis. Happy?!

It also took 12 hours before the mother ship raised the alarm.

It's was 8 hours - basically when they didn't return at expected time. It's very unlikely any help would have been offered before that point anyway - as has been explained on this thread.

You really don’t need to stick to these threads, if migrant crossings is foremost in your mind. Just chat about that instead

Sure you do.

But why can't people care about both? This is a very very unique situation which will obviously garner public interest for a variety of reasons.

You don't want patterned or striped. Even quite garish patterns on land can vanish against the seas.

I'm not sure what colours are best for something that you might want to detect by eye close to the surface - light (and therefore colour) behaves differently in water

TopMog · 22/06/2023 13:12

While it seems that every newspaper and other media is devouring and disseminating minute=by-minute information about a few billionaires who paid obscene amounts of money to go on a 'jollies' trip, they are not concerned about hundreds of desperate refugees fleeing war, torture, drought, floods, repressive regimes., etc.

People like Carola Rackete, Pia Klemp, and many other humanitarians with empathy who are rescuing refugees from drowning in rough seas are being criminalised, and face being imprisoned for years. I have met Carola: a lovely warm-hearted lady.

Let's get this into perspective: a few immensely wealthy men who could have donated money to the rescue efforts in the Mediterranean, choose instead to pamper themselves.

They have only themselves to blame: they have choices in life to benefit people, animals, the oceans, the environment, etc. But they don't - quite frankly, I think they are choice candidates for the Darwin Awards

I’ll come and comment on a thread about the Greek Migrant Boat disaster. It was absolutely devastating, heartbreaking and tragic, I can’t even to begin to imagine the absolute terror those people went through as the boat sank especially those in the hold. From the reports I’ve read it sounds like the Greek coastguard have a lot of questions to answer. The BBC found evidence that shows the circumstances leading up to the boat sinking don’t tally with what the Greek coastguard are saying and that they have contributed to the boat sinking.
The West does need to do more to help those fleeing war zones and politically unsafe countries so they don’t fall in to the hands of merciless and evil people traffickers who will charge them extortion amounts of money to travel on death trap boats.
I also can’t imagine the horror of being trapped in a tin can submersible several kilometres below the ocean.

yes, but the authorities would have been, in that time, studying and learning about the poor workmanship of this sub.

8 hours were negligent and I fail to understand whose poor decision this was as CEO who seemed to care more about money and continuing his tourist tours at all costs and therefore more concerned with bad publicity or future operations being stopped by the authorities( he was warned by others but refused to listen) etc, was in the sub.

Looks like this is the culture of OceanGate- only listening to themselves and none else.
