DH just put jam on a crumpet...

In your opinion, what does belong on a crumpet?

A bit of butter and marmite. But the crumpet should only be very lightly toasted - not at all browned.

Clotted cream and jam
Golden syrup

Butter and honey.
Cheese, melted.
Marmite then cheese, melted.
At a stretch or in a pinch then yes, butter and jam.

But these things I love just sadly don't belong: marmalade does not belong on a crumpet; chocolate spread does not belong on a crumpet.

Lots of real butter, especially butter with salt crystals. I know lots of people have them with jam or marmite, even with beans on but I’ve only ever had them with butter. Wouldn’t they be dry with just jam on?

I had a crumpet recently that was topped with creme fraiche and some caviar. Really good.

Pretty much anything can go on a crumpet as long as there is already butter on the crumpet. There must always be butter.

Nothing wrong with just jam on a crumpet.
We sometimes crack an egg onto a crumpet and fry it.
