Thread 4 - TalkExiles: "The Planet Goes On Being Round"

1000 replies

Kucinghitam · 13/01/2023 17:17

Continuation of previous lifeboat threads 1 & 2 & 3.

Gather here all ye refugees from the JTT Flat Earth Society, welcome to the reassuringly oblate spheroid of MN! Ye all already know the answers to the questions "How the heck do I format my post?" "Why can't I edit my typos?" "What do those acronyms mean?" and most importantly, "Where is everybody that I used to know?"

So really we're all here just to chat randomly.

Thanks for the kind wishes - I think I'm clear it - it started on the morning of Dec 27 and wandered around being variously muscle aches, cough, D&V cough again, and finally, after three weeks of that lot, vertigo that nearly made me fall over several times. All good clean fun.

Now I have backache and a very sore knee but have rediscovered the joy of ibuprofen and strong stretchy support wraps and hope to survive.

Tomorrow week it will be Spring, and already the garden has snowdrops and aconites and bright pink cyclamen and deep purple, sweetly scented violets, so there's lots to look forward to.

SinnerBoy · 24/01/2023 18:47

Or snowdrops haven't come up yet, but the crocus leaves are fat and juicy.

UnfortunatePoster · 24/01/2023 18:52

Can you shift the washing machine back yourself Gin? I can move ours if I otch it back with my knees - having a non shutting door would bug me massively, even if it's just cosmetic.

Kuc, the satay looks amazing, have a lovely time back home!

Hope everyone gets / stays healthy - my kids are managing to synchronise being ill still despite being 80 miles or so apart from each other (eldest went back to uni over a week ago), no idea how they managed that.

Gonners · 24/01/2023 19:05

@Ginmonkeyagain - unless you replaced the machine with one of the same brand, or even if you did, it might be that the place where the hinges attach isn't exactly the same. This happened to me recently when I replaced both the dishwasher (which had gone phut) and the washing machine (which was surely about to, being nearly 15 years old). The shop that delivered them basically wrecked the old doors and the kick-board while removing them, so In the end I had new ones fitted. They match the rest of the kitchen "almost but not quite", but I really don't care. Argh - will I be banned for saying that on MN?

The bloke who fitted the new doors and sorted out the mess said that personally he always avoided the problem by buying free-standing rather than fitted appliances!

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 24/01/2023 21:26

Washing machines move more easily while on a spin cycle.

bignosebignose · 24/01/2023 22:54

Posh free-standing git, we just abandoned our dishwasher and washing machine in the approximate vicinity of the fitted areas of the kitchen.

Ginmonkeyagain · 25/01/2023 07:20

I think changing out the magnets on the front of the machine should mainly, but not wholly solve the problem.

I will try today to get AO back to move the machine back a few mm but I am not hopeful.^^

Late to the discussion but I am a FIRE HORSE. Which means I am a. ancient but b. cool AF.

DeanVolecapeAKAelderberry · 25/01/2023 10:42

Definitely cool, but still very young. Wise, but young.

StephanieSuperpowers · 25/01/2023 10:53

I can't be doing with these youths complaining about being old.

MissLawls · 25/01/2023 15:03

Good afternoon. Goodness I haven't been on my computer for eight days! And only came on today to pay a tax bill HMRC has been chasing me for. Guess how much I owe them!? Go on. Guess. Give up? £21. And they send me texts and emails not just every day but several times a day! Given recent news about the Tory Party chairman it's a bit much!

Anyway retirement is great. I do though need to find something to do with myself with all this new-found time on my hands. Time but not much money. I'd rather have the time right now.

Hope all are well. I don't post on my phone on mumsnet as the text is too small on the app and the website has very annoying flashing ads at the top of the screen. I only miss JtT for its simplicity though much of that was lost for me when Johnny brought in those wretched buttons at the bottom and the endless scroll. I'll be interested to see what the new owners do with it which I think is due to take effect towards end of Feb. Seeing the place with ZERO discussion of recent events in Scotland is beyond strange but if that's what they want then fine. The news folder is like a prairie after a dust storm.

StephanieSuperpowers · 25/01/2023 15:05

Surely it must have merited some kind of a mention? I personally haven't looked, but I am curious as to which issue or event will be the one to break the dam, or for how long they can continue to pretend it isn't happening until the ludicrousness of the détente becomes unbearable.

DeanVolecapeAKAelderberry · 25/01/2023 15:10

No Lawls, it's GOOD. The discussion of Scottish events is happening in plain sight

www.mumsnet.com/talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/4727545-aibu-in-thinking-aibu-is-the-correct-place-for-this-thread

as well as on the womens rights folder

www.mumsnet.com/talk/womens_rights/4727323-a-woman-has-been-found-guilty-of-raping-two-women

People are getting more and more plain spoken - things are changing almost from day to say. Worth scrolling back a few days to see how previously unutterable things are being uttered.

Nice to see you btw!

Kucinghitam · 25/01/2023 15:13

Fucking hell, don't say Beetlejuice!

In other news, I can't quite believe how much food I have eaten today. My family are a terrible influence.

StephanieSuperpowers · 25/01/2023 15:15

It's a holiday, right? With family you haven't seen for ages? If those aren't two reasons to eat everything you can get, I don't know what is.

I am on holiday, 'tis true.

This is actually my second visit home in 6 months (we all made a trip last summer), but that was after a 6-year gap (2.5 years enforced by COVID) which was incredibly difficult for us all.

My dad's Alzheimer's is unfortunately progressing; he still remembers us and other core things but really struggles to form words now. My grandma is now in a home, having (a) gone deaf, (b) become very frail and unsteady and (c) forgotten almost everyone. I'm trying to grab every minute I can with them.

And also, to eat everything.

@DeanVolecapeAKAelderberry Sorry I didn't make myself clear. I referred to The Other Place when I said no discussion about Scottish events! Not here. I presumed be plenty going on here. My point was OVER THERE it's all crickets. Most odd. In the olden days, pre purdah, there would definitely have been a discussion.

StephanieSuperpowers · 25/01/2023 15:33

Oh dear. You need all the nice they can shovel at you.

MissLawls · 25/01/2023 15:36

@StephanieSuperpowers when the GRRB got knocked back by Westminster it got a couple of lines, on the news thread in the football folder and on the Scottish referendum thread. But that was it. So far as I can tell no mention of the rape case AT ALL! It's very odd. I keep looking to see how they are dealing with this embargo on all matters trans. But it really isn't a trans issue is it? It's about abuse. Abuse of women and abuse of the courts and prison system. Nowt do with trans!

StephanieSuperpowers · 25/01/2023 15:41

I can't believe they'd ignore threads to decapitate any other group either?

StephanieSuperpowers · 25/01/2023 15:41

threats.

Kucinghitam · 25/01/2023 15:42

@MissLawls Noooooooo 😰 <drops to knees, pleadingly>

Course not! But it's only women who get these threats and the boards have shown themselves repeatedly to be anti women unless you're a little handmaiden centring the menz.

MissLawls · 25/01/2023 15:44

@MissLawls Noooooooo 😰

I'm sorry @Kucinghitam I don't understand this post. Am I being bit fick!?
